Personally, any "Jerry Ballad" from the Mid-90s are painful and depressing.
Last Dead show, 7/9/1995 "So Many Roads".
2:20 On is hard to listen to (Insert joke...)

Yeah, Becks' "Sea Change" is very depressing with "Lost Cause" probably one of the better open up your vein songs on that album.
If I remember correctly, that album came out around the time him and his first wife split, or were about to.

Who would listen to a band called Hurt? That's just askin' for trouble.
I'm actually never saddened by overtly sad or emotional songs. Emo, screamo, et al does nothing for me. It's people who can wrap a touching or painful subject in metaphor who really get to me. Of course there's scarce few writers of music who could actually define metaphor and we're often left with bland, one dimensional pleading which just leaves me cold.

Maddie by The Descendents.
Come on baby, we gotta get our clothes on
There’ll be no easy days, ‘cause I've got no degree
You’ll see your brother in a week or three, here’s a picture of me
Just don’t let them see, ‘cause they’re not that fond of me
They’re gonna tell you that I'm not real
But their time is through
And I'll be the one, yeah, I'll see this through
I'll fight for you, no one else is going to
They’re too busy fighting over you
Come on baby, we gotta get our plane now
Punk rock won’t pay the bills, so we gotta get started early
I'd like to hang around here with you
Got a life to teach you, just you and me
But everyone’s just gotta see you
They’re gonna tell you that I'm not real
But their time is through
And I'm with you still
And I'll be the one, yeah, I'll see this through
I'll fight for you, no one else is going to
They’re too busy fighting over you
They’re gonna tell you that I'm not real
But we’re havin’ fun together everyday
What could be more real than that, to a girl and her dad
And there’s no way they can brainwash you away from me
Come on baby, I gotta try to explain things
There’s no easy way, to say these things to you
There’s no easy way to tell you what is real
So come on baby
Let’s just go home now
I'll be responsible
And I'll do everything I have to
Instead of fighting over you
Yeah, I'll be the one
I'll be invisible
And there’s no way they can brainwash you
I'll see it through
I'll be invincible
Come on baby
They're gonna tell you that I'm not real
I'll fight for you
Not fighting over you
And there’s no way they can brainwash you
I'll fight for you
Come on baby
There’s no way we can lose
We’ll be OK

Blue In The Face:
It's about time that I came clean with you
I'm no longer fine, I'm no longer running smooth
I thought that I found myself under something new
Just one more line I repeat over and over again
Till I'm blue in the face with a choking regret
As I talk in circles 'round you on my bed
Can't say I blame you one bit when you kept it all inside
When you left that night
It's about time that you got sick of me
No longer fun, and so far from interesting
I thought that I found me a cure for feeling old
Just one more line to keep me sleeping loudly and cold
In disgraced with a shameful regret
As I talk in tongues to myself in my bed
Can't say I blame you one bit when you kept it all inside
When you left that night
And all that followed fell like mercury to hell
Somehow we lost our heads for the last time
And all that followed fell like mercury to hell
Somehow we lost our heads for the last time
And I don't dream since I quit sleeping
And I haven't slept since I met you
And you can't breathe without coughing at daytime
And neither can I
So what do you say?
Your coffin, or mine?

"(It's Hard) Letting You Go" by Bon Jovi, from their criminally underappreciated masterpiece These Days. There's no actual video for it, but that post has great sound quality. Some people seem to think it's a breakup song, but the fucking heart-wrenching tone of the music and Jon's voice seem to me that it's about a lover dying.
They've never come close to the lyrical depth and evolved sound they put out in the 90s with this and Keep the Faith. I need a fucking drink just hearing this song.

Not to one up you, but one of the saddest songs ever is by DT, but it HAS to be A Change of Seasons. If you've never checked it out, get ready because it's about 24 minutes long.
1. A Change Of Seasons
[Music by Dream Theater]
[Lyrics by Mike Portnoy]
[I. The Crimson Sunrise]
[Instrumental]
[II. Innocence]
I remember a time
My frail, virgin mind
Watched the crimson sunrise
Imagined what it might find
Life was filled with wonder
I felt the warm wind blow
I must explore the boundaries
Transcend the depth of winter's snow
Innocence caressing me
I never felt so young before
There was so much life in me
Still I longed to search for more
But those days are gone now
Changed like a leaf on a tree
Blown away forever
Into the cool autumn breeze
The snow has now fallen
And my sun's not so bright
I struggle to hold on
With the last of my might
In my den of inequity
Viciousness and subtlety
Struggle to ease the pain
Struggle to find the same
Ignorance surrounding me
I've never been so filled with fear
All my life's been drained from me
The end is drawing near...
[III. Carpe Diem]
"Carpe diem
Seize the day"
I'll always remember
The chill of November
The news of the fall
The sounds in the hall
The clock on the wall
Ticking away
"Seize the Day"
I heard him say
Life will not always be this way
Look around
Hear the sounds
Cherish your life
While you're still around
("Gather ye rosebuds while ye may)
(Old Time is still a-flying)
(And this same flower that smiles today)
(Tomorrow will be dying")
We can learn
From the past
But those days
Are gone
We can hope
For the future
But there might not be one
The words stuck in my mind
Alive from what I've learned
I have to seize the day
To home I returned
Preparing for her flight
I held with all my might
Fearing my deepest fright
She walked into the night
She turned for one last look
She looked me in the eye
I said, "I Love You...
Good-bye"
("It's the most awful thing you'll ever hear")
("If you're lying to me...")
("Oh, you dearly love her")
("...just have to leave...)
(All our lives")
("Seize the day!")
("Something happened")
("Gather ye rosebuds while ye may")
("She was killed")
[IV. The Darkest Of Winters]
[Instrumental]
[V. Another World]
So far or so it seems
All is lost
With nothing fulfilled
Off the pages and the
T.V. screen
Another world
Where nothing's true
Tripping through
The life fantastic
Lose a step
And never get up
Left alone
With a cold blank stare
I feel like giving up
I was blinded by a paradise
Utopia high in the sky
A dream that only drowned me
Deep in sorrow, wondering why
Oh come let us adore him
Abuse and then ignore him
No matter what
Don't let him be
Let's feed upon his misery
Then string him up for all the world to see
I'm sick of all
Your hypocrites
Holding me at bay
And I don't need
Your sympathy
To get me through the day
Seasons change and so can I
Hold on Boy
No time to cry
Untie these strings
I'm climbing down
I won't let them push me away
Oh come let us adore him
Abuse and then ignore him
No matter what
Don't let him be
Let's feed upon
His misery
Now it's time for them
To deal with me
[VI. The Inevitable Summer]
[Instrumental]
[VII. The Crimson Sunset]
I'm much wiser now
A lifetime of memories
Run though my head
They taught me how
For better or worse
Alive or dead
I realize
There's no turning back
Life goes on
The offbeaten track
I sit down with my son
Set to see the Crimson Sunset
(Gather ye rosebuds while ye may)
Many years have come and gone
I've lived my life, but now must move on
(Gather ye rosebuds while ye may)
He's my only one
Now that my time has come
Now that my life is done
We look into the sun
"Seize the day
And don't you cry
Now it's time
To say good-bye
Even though
I'll be gone
I will live on
Live on"

All-time stop saddest song: Alone Again (Naturally) by Gilbert O'Sullivan
D_P-v1BVQn8
Sing-a-long lyrics:
In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower,
And climbing to the top,
Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it's like when your shattered
Left standing in the lurch, at a church
Where people saying,
"My God that's tough, she stood him up!
No point in us remaining.
We may as well go home."
As I did on my own,
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay,
Looking forward to, but who wouldn't do,
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt,
Talk about God and His mercy
For if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need?
I truly am indeed,
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that
There are more hearts
Broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?
(instrumental break)
Alone again, naturally
Now looking back over the years,
And what ever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old,
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand, why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart
So badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". The words are happy and uplifting but the melody is a serious bummer. In a Christmas movie whenever anyone needs to be sad, this song will play. The tune itself is so damn sad I think the lyrics are actually meant to be sarcastic.
"Christmastime" from the Charlie Brown Christmas Special sounds like a goddamn funeral dirge, too.

i was reminded of this thread yesterday when i had a rough day (more like a rough couple of days) at work and i was listening to this song on the way home. it's cheesier than most of the picks in this thread, but it's another one of those go-to songs when i'm feeling like shit. i found the actual video, and though it's a pretty sad song, the video had me giggling because--
1) nice mullet, deek.
2) the guy's WAY too energetic prowling about this bad stock set. stop flailing about, ass. and stop trying to take attention away from the fact that there is no band backing you up.
3) he should do a "80's white guy with a black guy's voice" duet with Rick Astley.
so here it is:

Here's a couple:
"He's Gone" by the Watchmen. Can't find it on youtube, but here's the lyrics:
Dreamt I turned my head around last night
when I got up, saw you sleeping
yeah, you were shaking
What am I to do
I've lost my father now
Will I be alright
yeah, will I make it
You're still in my life today
You're still in my thoughts, okay
You're still in my life today
You're still in my life
Who on God's great earth
can take a life of strength and fire
and just start weakening
From the outside in
What I'm thinking now
I'm taking all the blame for
It's a bit relieving
you leaving
You're still in my life today
You're still in my thoughts, okay
You're still in my life today
You're still in my life today
I'm sad he's gone
Sad he's gone
Sad he's gone
oh
How can I survive without my friend of mine
He was not perfect
Yet somehow perfect
What am I to do I've lost that part of me
Will I be alright
yeah, will I make it
You're still in my life today
You're still in my thoughts, okay
You're still in my life today
You're still in my life today
I'm sad he's gone
Sad he's gone
Sad he's gone
oh
Nothing's ever as bad as it seems
to be
and I know
I've been taken by my wicked dreams
oh
oh
Sad he's gone
Sad he's gone
Sad he's gone
This one thankfully doesn't hit as close to home, but it's pretty fucking sad.

According to Wikipedia it's about Carl Wilson's dog passing. Don't know if it was lost at sea. Also stated is that this is the song that Casey Kasem lost it on (no AP so I don't know if it's true). Apparently this is the song that was requested for some guys dog who died. An uptempo song by the Pointer Sisters was played and set Casey off.

Yeah, all the stars drip down like butter,
And promises are sweet,
We hold out our pans, lift our hands to catch them.
We eat them up, drink them up, up, up, up
Heyyyyyy, let me in.
Heyyyyyy, let me in.
I only wish that I could hear you whisper down,
Mister fisherman, to a less peculiar ground.
He gathered up his loved ones and he brought them all around
To say goodbye, nice try.
Heyyyyyy, let me in. yeah yeah yeah
Heyyyyyy, let me in. Let me in.
I had a mind to try to stop you. Let me in. Let me in.
But I've got tar on my feet and I can't see.
All the birds look down and laugh at me.
Clumsy, crawling out of my skin.
Heyyyyyy, let me in. yeah yeah yeah
Heyyyyyy, let me in.
Heyyyyyy, let me in. yeah yeah yeah
Heyyyyyy, let me in.
