National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

At dawn on Sunday, December 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in an attempt to cripple the fleet and hinder U.S. intervention in other Japanese targets in the South Pacific. The Japanese military expected that Germany would defeat Great Britain and the Soviet Union and that Japan would control the Pacific. The attack was opposed by Japanese admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who cautioned against a war with the United States, but he was overruled. After the attack, he said, "We have awakened a sleeping giant and have instilled in him a terrible resolve." He was right. Although airfields, port facilities, and warships were severely damaged and two battleships, the Utah and the Arizona, were destroyed, the attack mobilized the United States and signaled its entry into World War II. Today the Arizona is a memorial and a national park. - almanac.com

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2008
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

White House News

On National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we mourn the more than 2,400 Americans whose lives were lost in the surprise attack on our homeland that changed the course of history. Their service and sacrifice and the service and sacrifice of all our World War II veterans will be forever honored on this day by the citizens of a free and grateful Nation.

On December 7, 1941, the enemy nearly destroyed our Pacific Fleet, and the United States was forced into a long and terrible war. A generation of Americans stepped forward to fight for our country. Their message to America's enemies was clear: If you attack this country and harm our people, there is no corner of the Earth remote enough to protect you from the reach of our Nation's Armed Forces.

Following the war the United States worked to make our most bitter enemies into our closest friends through the transformative power of freedom. The joys of liberty are often secured by the sacrifices of those who serve a cause greater than self. To honor and recognize the sacrifice of our Armed Forces, I have designated nine sites as the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. This monument will preserve our history and help share this heritage with future generations. On this anniversary, we honor the heroes who risked and lost their lives for our security and freedom. Their selfless dedication exemplifies the great character of America and continues to inspire our Nation.

The Congress, by Public Law 103-308, as amended, has designated December 7 of each year as "National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim December 7, 2008, as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. I encourage all Americans to observe this solemn occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I urge all Federal agencies and interested organizations, groups, and individuals to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff this December 7 in honor of those who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fifth day of December, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

GEORGE W. BUSH

I remember Josh Hartnett dying in Ben Affleck's arms. I remember the plane battle with the Zips. I remember it all and it was a horrible moment. Never forget.

I thought Ben Affleck died while fighting in Europe and then Kate Beckinsale hooked up with his buddy, Josh Hartnett. I left then to avoid the crowd all trying to leave at the same time.

I thought it was Josh who died while Ben lived. We need someone to help us. Or I think earlier in the movie they thought Ben was dead, then Josh/Kate hooked up, but Ben was really just MIA. Then at the end Josh dies and Ben/Kate unite.

We went to the Pearl Harbor Memorial in Oahu a few years ago, and yeah, the place was crawling with Japanese.

The movie they show you while waiting to take the boat to the Arizona is a real heart-tugger. Got something stuck in my eye that day...

When you're standing over the shipwreck you can still see the oil bubbling up 60+ years later.

In our paper today was an account of a 90 year old PH Vet. In a few years there won't be any left. Tip of the hat to those that served.

X2!

I am not sold on that oil thing. Yes, I saw it coming up, but the cynic in me says they put some more down there. I mean 60 years later you still see it continuously coming up?

A great memorial, very somber. I went ini November of 2001, one month after that other thing happened. Puts it in perspective. Too much fucking perspective. (Spinal Tap anyone?).

Do you know how long 60 years is? It comes up 24/7, for 60 years?

Air is constantly leaking out of your tires, but how often do you pump them up? Now multiple that time by a few thousand, oil will be coming up to the surface for more than 100 years.

There's a documentary on the Military Channel (History Channel cousin) tonight at 11 pm (PST, but maybe EST is different) that my DVR has set to record.

It's called Secrets of Pearl Harbor, and divers explore the wreckage at PH and at Bikini Island. Maybe they'll talk about it on the show.

But besides, if my government says it's true I believe it.

In one of the old Superman cartoons, Lois says something like "Superman, the Jpas are stealing the plane!"

The episode is even titled Japoteurs

I've seen a few wreck sites that were over 40 years old that still have an oil slick. It only takes a couple of drops of oil to discolor the surface.

At some point the hippies will probably want the wreck cleaned up for the environment.

Filthy hippies.
