I was fortunate to have been a part of the Dallas music scene in the late 80's. It's been said many times that if you were ever fortunate enough to have met Darrell, then you would know that he was an even better human being than guitarist. That is absolutely true.
We weren't best friends, just guys whose bands crossed paths right up to the point where "Cowboys" broke. While they were recording it and after the release, they were still playing locally and Darrell and Vince would show up every now and then at our shows and take us back to their place to get drunk and jam. To this day I have yet to meet a less pretentious and caring person. Vinnie was business-Darrell was your friend.
After I moved back to Tennessee, I could still get hold of the Abbotts and arrange to get together whenever Pantera came to Nashville and then when their dad moved here, I would go over and catch up. The last time I saw Darrell was with Damageplan in Louisville, Ky that August and spent the day just hanging out in a park next to the river. Kids would come over and get shit signed and talk for a couple of minutes and Dime would spend as much time as they wanted. The last thing we did was make plans to get together in Dallas over the holidays and he would take me and my kids to see the Dallas Stars.
I still cry over this loss. God Bless You, Darrell.

Miss him much.
I was thinkin if there was a heaven or hell, what a band he would be a part of. Layne Staley, Cliff Burton, Dime, Randy Rhodes and John Bonham. Man. That would be one hell of a show.

Yeah he's the only celebrity that I really had an emotion for when they died. What a fucking tragedy.
