So, I've been sharing a house with some people for about 8 months now(all of us on the lease with a bill in everyone's name).
Short version, due to losing a job, one of the housemates fell behind on his bills(still managed rent though). Now that he has one, he's been slow in paying back and at the moment seems as if he may be attempting to try to pull a cut and run in the night type of move(took his 360, flatscreen tv and some clothes out today, a bunch of stuff here still).
So my question is, what can we do to try to get money out of him if he does pull this(especially since the gas for the house is under his name currently).
Thanks for any helpful replies, the rest, go fuck yourselves. :action-sm

Two words:

Seriously, your best option would be to post a sentry outside his room. Sleep in the floor in the hallway outside of his door.

Any chance he pawned some of that stuff to raise cash?

Fuck that any of his shit that is still in the house needs to be put under lock and key in someone else's room. Tell him he can have his shit when every owed dollar is paid back and the gas is put in one of your names.

Once that is done kick the shit out of him for trying to sneak away.

Ummmmmmmmmmm...Do as Obama would do and talk to him nicely and try to make him see your point of view.

you don't have any good options.

I would call the gas company and cancel the current account and put it in your name, that way if he defaults on the gas bill it won't get shut off and not turned back on until the property owner pays it - yes the property owner is ultimately responsible, but you do not want the gas shut off for any length of time.

Other than that, you gotta just hope he pays what he owes the rest of you - its probably not worth pursuing in court. Sometimes its best just to cut your loses in these situations. Legally you can't hold his property until he pays.
