I am finally almost out of my lease. I have 7 payments left on my 06 ridegeline. I am looking at an 09 Honda Fit. I love those cars. Plenty of storage, real zippy, plus its a honda. I figure now is probably the best possible time to try to get a car. Dealers, no matter who they are, are struggling. I want to get my payment down to below $300, but want the fully loaded version. Right now, with the trade in, the best they could do was $365 a month. I am really going to aim for $295 a month and do my best not to budge to far from there.

Is anyone a good negotiator or have any good tips? I am going to call a dealer I know in Tulsa and see what can be done there. I just don't know what kind of deals can be made for a new car.

Two words: certified used

See if you can find what you want in a certified used. If you are 100% sure you want a Fit, so be it. But, if you're flexible you might get a better deal on something else. The Honda dealer here has certified used stuff with like 3K or 4K miles on it. You can save a bunch of dough and get a better warranty.

We were shopping for a Civic but got a killer deal on a cerified Accord, fully loaded EX-L.

They're hurting bad. We bought our car almost 2 months ago and they still have most of the same cars sitting on the lot. They got a Civic EX w/Navigation that is an '07 leftover for like $16K. The car has 8 miles on it, but they are selling it as a certified used (with the 7yr/100k warranty). I would have bought the thing but my wife is particular about the color and was apprehensive about learning to drive a manual transmission. The car is still on their lot.

They had some certified used Fits also. I bet most dealers will.

I asked our sales rep why they had all these '08 certified used cars with under 5K miles on them. He told me people buy cars, can't handle the payments and come crawling back wanting to trade it in on something cheaper.. They end up getting something older and used with some miles on it just to get out of the payment.

None of this applies, of course, if you are going the lease route again...

Pretty negotiable to a certain extent. Best thing to do is to find the Edmund's and Blue Book value and start from there. Those ought to be lower than the sticker to begin with. Below that, you're really starting to cut into the salesman's commission. A problem though is if you're getting a popular color for a popular car, so check into that as well. Best time to attempt to settle is at the end of the month when they're desperate for a quota, don't be afraid to walk out and go elsewhere and make sure to hit up multiple dealerships if possible and pit them against each other. After you buy it, you're not obligated to use their service department anyway.

That's from my one experience buying my own car and my parents helping wit their years of hating car salesmen and making their lives hell.

Ford is offering a free Focus with the purchase of an F150. How about making the car just cheaper? Why would I want to have two cars I need to insure? If they made the Flex reasonably priced I think I'd buy one.

They do that because it gets two off the lot.. Someone did a buy one get one free ad down here a couple months ago.

Try to find out when their fiscal year ends. Any extra inventory at the end of the year is considered profit for tax purposes.

That's probably the stupidest tax law there is after the labor tax.

When I was there today they had one car on the board. Sold one fucking car today. The sales guys ignored me the whole time cause im in jeans a ghetto ass hoodie, and none of them saw me roll up in my ridgeline. I figured they would have jumped on me like I was the last chopper outta Nam.

I really enjoyed the car. Well made and it was really really spunky. I just want tinted windows. I figure I could go to pretty much any dealership and get whatever I want. I even like the Dodge srt Calibur but the Fit is just the smart choice. I was honestly shocked how nice it really is for that cheap of a car.

QFMFT!!!

You will save considerably over new pricing. New pricing is dependant on demand, hybrids n'shit, forget it, probably a six month back order from the factory.

Find the model you want certified used w/all the features you want, then find the same exact thing at another competing dealership, then force them both to whore themselves down on price. Always have your number in mind (buying number, not payment number!) never reveal what you want to put down or pay per month, they will tweak the deal to give you what you want, know this shit in advance and have your financing available from outside the dealership already to go. Once they get close or at your number, agree to buy. If they say they have to talk to the sales manager, etc. tell them you will let them do it once, if they say they have to keep going back and forth, tell them, "Fuck this, I don't have the time, is this deal going to be done at this price or not?" if they say no, walk out.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. When I bought my Tahoe in 04, I was able to negotiate down $7000 of the asking price.

It sounds like there isnt enough of a markup on a $17,000 car to negotiate too much. When I bought my ridgeline, i bought it brand new, and they took $4000 off. We shall see.

They typical profit a dealer wants to make on a certified used unit is about $3,000 over wholesale cost. It costs the dealership about $1,000 in costs to them to "Certify" the unit thru the manufacturer since it's basically "insurance" on the vehicle's reliability. The remaining $2,000 in markup is there for your to whore them down on.

They gave me 4 options.

Sell it.
Wait, and turn it in.
Refinance it.
Trade it in.

the $365 a month was for a brand new 09 fit sport, with them taking my truck in... If i was getting a more expensive car, that would be one thing...... since im trying to get into something much cheaper, it makes it harder.

Alright, so here is the break down. the other dealerships I talked to didnt even want to talk really.

Here is how it breaks down.

$16,730 is the asking price on the car
$2,968 is what I owe to finish my lease.
$19,828 is the total.
6.25% is the interest :rap:
so thats $1231

total is $21,059 :icon_eek:

@ 60 months thats $350 a month.. but they keep saying $382 a month... where the fuck is this extra $30 a month coming from?

BTW, used Fits dont last and sell for pretty much the same as new ones. Its tough to find a fit sport manuel...

Ridgeline gas mileage is 15mpg
Fit is 37-41 mpg.

I drive 1000-1200 miles per month. 80 gallons, thats about $120 a month in gas right now. Which is @ $1.50 or so.
Fit @ 37 mpg. Thats about 32 gallons per month. That is about $48 a month in gas.

Total savings $72. $864 a year, just in gas. But i lose the usability of a truck.

when gas goes back up to $3, the ridgeline would cost $240 a month, the Fit, $96. :icon_eek:

The stated mpg for the fit is 34 on the highway, but i have read several reviews that people are getting up to 41. 37 is just an average.

As far as getting a stick, you might want to check into an automatic if fuel economy is your prime motivation:

According to what I see here, the automatic Fit gets 28 city, 35 highway. The manual Fit gets 27 city, 33 highway. Ok, so I have goofy math. I have no idea what the fuck i was doing then. I need to work on the percentage rate, get my credit up over the next few months build up enough for a $2000 or so down payment. Then go for it... sounds like the smart idea.

Car dealers can buy out a lease cheaper than you can. They can also usually skate on the last X number of payments. You can get that number down as far as the money for your existing lease.

So, just approach like "Look, i understand you can buy out the lease cheaper than me. So how bout we just tack on that amount that it would cost you guys to buy out the lease instead, and Ill take that car today. Or, Ill just wait 6 months to buy. Your choice really... "

Look at this (http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=62&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=ascending&sortfield=MILES+ascending%2cPRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=true&criteria=CPO_RESULTS_ONLY-true%7cK-%7cE-ALL%7cM-_20_%7cG-20000%7cB-30000%7cH-%7cD-_6228_%7cN-N%7cR-50%7cI-1%2c7%7cP-MILES+ascending%2cPRICE+descending%7cQ-ascending%7cY-_2008-2007-2006_%7cX-popular%7cZ-18966&aff=national&paId=293194538&recnum=0&leadExists=true).

Wow that is a nicer one. Thank you.

Car dealers can buy out a lease cheaper than you can. They can also usually skate on the last X number of payments. You can get that number down as far as the money for your existing lease.

True.

See if Honda eats like the last three lease payments if applied to the purchase of a new vehicle.

The intrest rate does seem high, I think GMAC is even offering C Tier Credit rates of like 4.5% but they want you to put like 20% down (pretty much why they haven't been selling shit the past several months)

That was without even trying. Look hard man, you'll find deals out there.

And for god's sake don't lease again.

Having said that, the Fit is a great car. I like it better than the Civic.

I am being very specific though. It has to be a manual transmission. Non negotiable. I haven't had much luck seeking them out. Most are automatic or those semi-automatics for faggots.

Why does it have to be a stick? The auto gets the same mileage as the manual. You're not buying a sports car. Maybe its because I shift gears all day, but I never buy manual shift cars. Especially used ones. They've almost always been beaten to hell by bad drivers.

I have 162000 miles on my pickup and I've never had to replace a clutch. I like driving manual. It's more fun and I have more control. My theory is if you have to replace a clutch then you suck at it.

You're buying a Honda so its not really an issue, but some cars just have shit clutches. And even a Honda I wouldn't buy a used stick. Too many people think its fun to drive them like maniacs, and the owners tend to be younger, which also means bad driver and poor maintenance.

I want an Infiniti. The Honda is for the guys whose thread I humped on.

I can see why you'd want the stick, but to be honest unless you're looking to make your own Skyline out of it, the auto would still be adequate. But at least it is a car made with performance in mind.

Isn't the Maxima just a rebadged Skyline for the US market?

I have seen two in person. Siiiiiiiiiick.....

I'm with Ruck. I want a stick. I love driving a stick. My civic is a stick. I do tend to redline any manual I drive though. I mean, the whole time test driving the Fit yesterday, i could barely keep the rpm's under 5000. And btw, the cargo room in that thing is rediculous. I can still do small deliveries for my store. Fantastic.

It would even out. I put it in 5th while im driving around town. At one point i was getting close to 40mpg in my civic, even with all of its "high performance" mods.
