Well you can add me to that list. I haven't gone to see them in a while, though. Unfortunately I've gotta drive 2+ hours each way to get to any venue that they play at anymore, but I did get out for 3 of The Gatherings when they were in Ohio.

They went in a less dark, more goofy direction on those B/B albums. Some of it worked, some of it didn't. I agree that Cherry Pie was one of the misses.

Not a song about a serial killer but supposedly inspired one, AC/DC's Nightprowler.

Oh and I went through the ICP phase a few years ago. I still regularly listen to their music.

You're not the only one.. Jani Lane agreees with you.

Many of the band members feel that "Cherry Pie" is not actually one of the better songs on the album, and see the song as a double edged sword: it brought them fame, but many of their other songs are overshadowed by the major hit. On VH1's HEAVY: The Story Of Metal - Episode 3: Looks That Kill, Lane expressed his regret for writing the song, stating that "I could shoot myself in the fucking head for writing that song." However, he later clarified that he had been under personal stress at the time of the VH1 interview, and had no ill feelings towards his association with the song.

Geldof wrote the song after reading about the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children playing in a school playground across the street from her home in San Diego, California. She killed two adults and injured eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her full explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays, this livens up the day." The song was first performed less than a month later at the Fox Theatre, San Diego.

The Mama-Son Trilogy by Pearl Jam

Alive, Once, and Footsteps

"Alive" on its own is autobiographical about how Eddie Vedder's dad was really his step-dad and his real dad died before he was ever told about him but he looked a lot like his real dad did when he was younger. In reality, some of his mom's friends who knew his real dad would give him creepy looks like they wanted to fuck him. In the trilogy, the mother fucks him. That turns him into a serial killer who targets prostitutes in "Once." In "Footsteps," he's in a prison cell blaming his mother for fucking him up.

This one's not actually about a serial killer, just a guy who kills his girlfriend, but the Killers have their Murder Trilogy: Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf, Midnight Show, and Jenny Was a Friend of Mine. Some guy gets dumped and sees his ex with another guy, gets drunk, and gets the "If I can't have you, nobody can" mindset and strangles her.

Dangit, I stand corrected:

This song has had its fair share of controversy as to the meaning of the song. The top theories of what the song means seem to be that it is about a vampire, the Zodiac Killer, an odd sexual encounter, or a man who experiences a botched attempt at seducing a woman. In a 1995 interview by Jennifer Clay, bassist Lisa Umbarger and guitarist Todd Lewis gave these statements about the song:

Umbarger said, "They're just these silly stories he's (Todd) heard his family tell. Like 'Tyler' and 'Possum Kingdom' are just like stories...In Texas, there's just this big storytelling thing - whenever your family gets together, they sit and talk and tell all these stories. 'Possum Kingdom' is a ghost story."

Lewis said jokingly "Possum Kingdom is a lake. One of the ten best fishin' spots in the U.S. Is it about a ghost or vampire at the lake? I don't know."

"It's not about vampires," Umbarger insists. "Even though we have a big underground vampire following in Florida. They come with their teeth and everything. I'm not lying about that, that's a real story. They'll show up and you'll be talking to someone, and they'll smile and it's like, 'Jesus Christ! You've got fangs!' And they're like, 'Yeah. It's a vampire thing.' So we have this big vampire underground following, and 'Possum Kingdom' has kind of stirred it up."

"It's just a story I heard long ago; it's just a really cool, eerie lake, and some stuff I heard and some stuff I just make up. I tend to do that," Lewis explains about the watering hole where his family used to hang out and barbecue. "They dammed up this big river up there, and it's got all these spooky names like Hell's Gate. It's really cool."

The explanation always made sense to me....possums come out at night, the mention of her looking the same way forever, the narrator's "dark secret" and asking her to be his bride.

I had no idea there was a lake named Possum Kingdom in their homestate...what a bizarre name for a body of water.
