I need some recommendations. I need to drill through a hundred or so laminated particle boards. I bought a 2" Rigid bit from Home Depot but by the 10th board it was really struggling to get through. Can someone tell me what bits would do a decent job? I can either by 10 of these Rigid bits for about 8 or 9 dollars or if there is something else that may be more expensive but can efficiently get through a lot of these suckers.

Had a lot of luck with these...

http://www.freudtools.com/p-297-precision-shear-forstner-bitsbr-nbsp.aspx

These are HHS...

But if have to do a lot I would get the carbide versions...

http://www.freudtools.com/p-296-carbide-forstner-bitsbr-nbsp.aspx

Prob have to go to a tool supply or smaller hardware store... like Woodcraft (http://www.woodcraft.com/)

Oh I tried those Rigid ones... they sucked balls... get half way though what I was drilling and the screw point would stop pulling... a booo.

Oh and if you are drilling 2" holes I would prob use at least a drill press or a half assed 1/2 drill.

I think a drill press is overkill. I only need to drill one 2" hole in these boards and then eight 3/16" holes. The boards are only 2' x 2'. I'll check out those links. Thank you.

Well gonna sound like Norm now... but if you have to do a bunch of holes in the same location would be more gooder to make up a jig clamped to the drill press base and bang out ur holes. Assuming you have or have access to a drill press...

if your blowing out hole saws you must be cutting something harsher than wood & laminate.

try not going to fast... the faster you spin... the hotter the toofs get and they dull quicker.

If your laminate has metal fleck in it.. thats prob why they are getting eaten up. explain better what your cutting. Mayby use the beat bit to get through the laminate and a good one to finish the wood part. keeping the wood one sharp by not letting the laminate wreck it.

Is what your cutting newer material? Because asbestos in things will wipe out a bit in no time plus kill you.

I can get access to one if need be but not really sure how to use it let alone make a jig. No one local sells the Freud bits. Local lumber place has Ivy Classic but not sure if it is the same.

Yeah, probably going too fast. I just want to get it done and over with. Home Depot sells Freud forstner bits called "Diablo" but doesn't mention them on their own site.

This^^

Most brands sell hole saws with carbide tips. You'll go through all those boards with one.

Starrett Makes some nice ones.

Two words: Harbor Freight

They're dirt cheap. You should be able to buy a bunch of them fairly cheap and that should get you through your job.

They have stores in EHT and Vineland.

Just doing a quick search of their site brought up this (http://search.harborfreight.com/cpisearch/web/search.do?keyword=holesaw).

They have various sets, and probably sell individual bits in the store. They have a tungsten carbide set that says is self-sharpening and seems like it'll cut through anything.

I was about to mention a forstner bit but I am not sure what that would do to the laminate. The way they tear through wood it might crumble the laminate without making a good cut for you.

i have to disagree on the harbor freight for the hole saws... ive had hoorable luck with them, as a matter of fact almost every "edged" cutting tool that ive bought from there is total junk, i dont even like there grindeing discs or sand paper, i broke down and bought a really nice set from "MAC" tools years ago and they work great, i use them on steel, aluminum, wood, you name it. ive also had wonderfull success with "Lenox" hole saws, i have there regualr HSS, and diamond ones for cutting glass. if he's burning up the saws i would bet that he's running the saw too fast, and its a really cheep saw,

i also have to agree with steve on the drill press and jigging the project, if these parts have to fit something that's the only way to do it, other wise your going to have to not only mark and measure every one your going to have to make sure that you do every one the same, thats just a pain in the ass.
