Patrice and Opie and Jim were discussing it today -

I've read about Method Acting and i've found that sense memory is particularly interesting.... as in not just the remembering something that personally made you sad in your personal life, but remembering and recalling something that your other senses were feeling at that exact moment.

When you were told that a loved one died, what was the temperature and the smell and the sound of the place you were in? Was someone wearing a perfume?
It's not the only way, but it's one way.

Onions.

Seriously though, I remember reading they use something to get them to cry, some kind of drops in their eyes.

Thats what most use, some kinda vapors. When they see that little mystery bottle come out its either a **** scene or somebody's going to get *****. Either way tears and maybe teeny tiny micro stitches are in the mix.

I remember Kevin Smith saying something about using compressed air. Makes sense, but doesn't seem like the best idear.

There was an SNL sketch with Phil Hartman about this, where he steals another actor's painful memory to make himself cry. It was pretty funny.
