he mentioned it today - sounds like a great premise for a contest.
what was the background on that ball? was it in the family?
Norton offered $800 sight unseen.

Personally, I think that the only sports memorabilia worth a damn is stuff with proven, irreplaceable sentimental value, like Babe Ruth and many legendary players pre-1970. Even the most beloved athletes of the modern era will never capture hearts like those of the bygone eras.

listening to the show now:
subject of ball came back up again....listeners feedbacked that Opie could get 30k for it.
they asked opie what he'd do with the money, he said "maybe just throw it back to the listeners" and..... "maybe we'll do our bit", which I assume is the cash drop from the helicopter bit. then the bell was rang, and opie said, "that's right." and they moved on. so that seemed a bit odd.
does anyone take that as meaning the helicopter bit is to be used only when they know they're fired and there are no bosses to answer to?

"maybe we'll do our bit", which I assume is the cash drop from the helicopter bit.I think the bit he was referring to is where they wanted to hide money somewhere in New York and then give clues to where it is, so people go out and search for it.
Which I always thought was an amazing idea. Sounds like a radio stunt a jock would have done long ago; then Hollywood makes a comedy movie out of the story.

I'd love for someone to sit in a chair and have Opie throw a fastball, point blank at their face in order to win.

Why would he want to get rid of it? Maybe he doubts it's authenticity.

He just got married, the 11 said it doesn't go with the window treatment in the "sun room", so it, like any other balls in the vicinity, must go.

Worked in Sports Memorabilia for 8 years. If Op really wants to sell it he needs to send it one of the genuine authenticators of Ruth Memorabilia. Luckily the foremost experts are all based within a 200 mile radius of NYC and he can ship them to these guys and get a legit Certificate of Authenticity (Or as many of my Obama-Supporting customers would call it "Certifity" ). With a proper COA from a reputable Ruth Authenticator he could command $20,000 for it (The days of $30-$40K are long gone, he should have sold it 6 years ago). Without a COA, Jimmy's offer of $800 was VERY generous.

I'd trade him two packets of Skittles for the ball. I'd even throw in a bottle of wine so I could be mocked on the air once again.
