If you paid attention to this show, you wouldn't look like such a fuck right now. The very last time Leary called into the show, the first thing he did was address the Louis CK thing, and it turns out Louis doesn't recall the past correctly; or maybe Denis is wrong, but there's just a misunderstanding there. While not as big a name as carlin or pryor in time I'm positive he would have become bigger then they ever would. Leary is a guy who plans things a few steps ahead which is why I think hes been successful. Most great comics have been great comics and shitty businessmen. Louie CK is an amazing comic and director but he never had the "I GOTTA SUE HIM FOR STEALING FROM ME!" business sense that guys like dane cook have. He could make a really big splash in the pool if he did that but hes got to much integrity to dirty his hands with such people.

So your standard now is that in order to be good and funny on O&A you have to come in when you've got nothing going on?

The guy writes and produces a weekly hour long series. He's writing books. He's acting in movies. He's doing voice-over work. You expect him to just wake up on the rare weekday that he's off at 5 am, to blow off his wife and kids, and come tell dick jokes on the radio for your benefit? He's DENNIS LEARY. He's not Patrice O'neal or Bob Kelly or Bill Burr.

I'd like to see how much Dennis Leary gets paid to do a guest spot on a show, or a day's work on a film for a small part... and he comes on O&A for free, hangs out and entertains. When the show did the walkover, him and Lenny Clarke came on, did both sides of the show, and did one of the best O&A shows of that entire year.

As the recession worsens and people start re-evaluating the money they allocate to entertainment expenditures, there's been some discussion about how the NHL will keep fans coming back.

First and foremost are extraordinarily deep ticket price cuts in markets with struggling teams, which are already happening. But there's also been the notion that NHL hockey could become a little more attuned to our primal cravings: that fighting may increase to put fannies in the seats.

Violence sells, in sports and in Hollywood. A guy like Denis Leary knows this, which is why the Boston Bruins fan and noted supporter of all things puck (to the point of stomaching some time on the ice with Rachel Ray) believes fisticuffs will dramatically increase during the economic downturn.

Here's Leary from yesterday's Opie and Anthony Show, appearing in support of his new book "Why We Suck," talking hockey:

"What's going to happen now is, for the next four or five years because people are going to be very careful about how they spend their money ... this whole idea of the fighting going away is just going to drop right out of the equation.

No. Rescue Me WAS a great show. It was a great show season 1 and maybe 2 when it was a real show about real NYC firefighters and how they were dealing with all the death that was around them during/post 9/11.

After season 2 it became a stupid unrealistic male version of a soap opera. If you find it entertaining good for you and enjoy it but it sucks compared to what it started out to be.

Love the Leary. I was hooked the first time I listened to No Cure For Cancer. Rescue Me is one of my favorite shows and I don't give a shit about all the extra bullshit that people bitch about. Leary's great. I just got done reading his book as well and I really enjoyed it. I will say I liked Lil Jimmy's book more but it was a close second.

IMO, if Leary stole No Cure For Cancer from Bill Hicks, he did as good a job of stealing it as Coppola did when he stole The Godfather from Mario Puzzo.

I'm not aware of the Leary / Hicks thing but what Coppola did was an authorized movie adaptation based on Puzo's book, and Puzo got paid nicely for it.
