Listening to Avail's "Dixie" made me start thinking of what are the best punk/hardcore bands of the past 20 years.

Some ideas that come to mind:

Avail
The Bouncing Souls
Lifetime
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Kid Dynamite
Quicksand
Alkaline Trio

Your thoughts?

Hardcore - Sick Of It All ......no contest. New York Hardcore is the only hardcore.

Agnostic Front
Warzone
Biohazard
Carnivore

Punk is too subjective a term and too many different styles to pick one band.

My personal faves:
Alkaline Trio
Bouncing Souls (until original drummer left)
Face To Face
Dillinger Four

Older bands:
Dead Kennedys
Circle Jerks
Ramones
Misfits
D.R.I.
Minor Threat

NOFX
Rancid
The Aquabats
Against ME!
Dropkick Murphy's
Green Day
Tiger Army
Hot Snakes

damn, 20 years is tough, here are the ones that missed.
Social Distortion, The Misfits, Bad Religion (over 20)
Fugazi, Minor Threat (just barely over 20)

eidt: The Refused

NOFX
Rancid
The Aquabats
Against ME!
Dropkick Murphy's
Green Day
Tiger Army
Hot Snakes

You know what? I'm gonna add Green Day in my list too.

People can hate them all they want, but if you like Ramones/Buzzcocks/Misfits style punk, you have to like Green Day.

Ha, I thought that would get to some people. They were straight enough to be on the radio, but still punk enough to be "punk".

Lookin at the 20 year music, and then looking at the 30 year music, I really don't see the staying power in the 20's. I think the older stuff holds up much better to time.

They got a raw deal by having a ska-ish song released first, but Schleprock was actually pretty good, they were very Oi influenced and actually did a really good version of "Running Riot" by Cockney Rejects

Gotta agree with OP on Quicksand and Dillinger Escape Plan. DEFINITELY agree on The Refused, NOFX, Dropkick Murphys, Face To Face, Social D, and Rancid.

Some of the better, newer punk bands:
The Thermals
The Night Marchers
Flogging Molly
Idlewild
Future of the Left
He Is Legend
Report Suspicious Activity
Senses Fail
Strung Out
Thrice
Gogol Bordello

Wow, my idea of punk is beating the shit out of half the bands mentioned in this thread.

Green Day? Oof.

Give me FEAR or The Meatmen any day.

Like someone said earlier...NYHC is the onlt hardcore, although I cannot dismiss the likes of

DC

Bad Brains
Minor Threat

Ca
Chain of Strength

Ma
Slapshot

There was some great hardcore back in the day. I also agree with Don, The Meatmen were in a class by themselvs....The Mentors were all about hardcore hatred.

I do like Hatebreed who shows some great NYHC roots....

Also some of the metalcore out there is pretty good for newer shit

Atreyu
Underoath
Bleeding Through

Oh welll fire away at me if you like, but for new shit those guys all do a good job

I picked Green Day because in their early years they were great, if you like poppy upbeat punk. Yes they are faggots now, but I can't deny their influence. When I was young I listened to all styles of metal, punk and hardcore.

FEAR:The Record got many plays on my stereo as well. I actually went to see their "reunion" tour a while back at Irving Plaza (ironically Green Day's mainstream success led to a revival of sorts for all the older punk bands, I also saw the Sex Pistols reunion), and actually got kicked out by Lee Ving himself. Me and my friend went to the stage and started to spit on him, trying to emulate the old days, and he actually stopped playing, pointed me out and told security to "get the asshole in the brown hat the fuck out of here" :). Not so punk after all.

I think the Bouncing Souls have gotten better as the years went on. After Shal left, they released "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" which is one of their strongest releases.

I forgot Rancid, but I feel their releases are spotty and they tried too hard to follow the Clash's blueprint of trying to be all over the map (specifically "Life Won't Wait") and are too unfocused to be considered amazing. "And out Come the Wolves" is by far their best work.

If the Ramones created punk and therefore are punk, Green Day are also punk.

Hardcore, definitely not, but hardcore is its own scene that always gets grouped under the generic Punk label

Maybe in the early days, butI have a hard time lopping them along with the Ramones, Rancid or Sex Pistols (even Rollins). Lately they seem to be more pop rock.

yes, I heard rumors it was coming back in mid January..any truth to that or is it gone? I've spent most of my time at underground garage.. I sometimes check out faction but I hate a lot of that linkoln park type stuff. I can record the channel and listen to about 10% of what I record.

Yeah, I heard/read the same thing after AC/DC took over the fungus channel, a buddy who has Sirius said that there was a punk station next to Faction that was also cancelled or changed to AC/DC (he's not a big punk fan).

I don't think they'll bring it back, not a big enough audience, the influence of Sirius in the new partnership seems to be about making money, not about providing music to the customer.

I always thought of GBH and The Exploited as punk, but they mey just be more like British hardcore like Discharge...Also loved Broken Bones..

Heading to the gym with a newly loaded MP3 Player and will have an awesome fucking workout...

The NYHC scene ruled back in the day.

I was more a fan of crossover thrash / hardcore like D.R.I. mostly because those were the types of gigs we played and that's the niche we fell into. We shared stages with alot of these acts.

Any NYHC band was good really.

Agnostic Front

COC

Sick of It All

Rest In Pieces.

Cro-Mags

Crumb Suckers

Sucker Punch

Murphy's Law.

Good times... good times..

I still have my Back With A Bong on clear blue vinyl.

I cant believe no one has mentioned Operation Ivy. They have to be one of the fundamental "must have" bands for punk. I know they border on ska, but there is plenty of non ska songs they have.

as for some other bands, I'll try to stick to the ones not listed yet...

Gorilla Biscuits
Crass
FYP
Propaghandi
Screeching Weasel
Pennywise
Less than Jake
Descendents

The Dillinger Escape Plan

I liked them a lot from the S/T to Calulating Infinity. Their new shit is STANK!

Refused

Converge
Pennywise

i vote Patricia Day.........never been to a horrorpos show, but I think I'd try to get a peek up that dress.

but I gotta say that Ruyter Suys almost gave me a boner when I saw Nashville Pussy. Seeing her shred during a solo with those titties bouncin around was surreal.

I forget whether Pete or Lou was the singer for SOIA, but he has the best hardcore voice out their....I always forget to include The Crumbsuckers in any hardcore talk. He was another one with a great hardcore voice.

As far as straightedge Civ had the best whiny straightedge voice.
