Fox's Baseball Ratings Crush Competition (http://apnews1.iwon.com/article/20031021/D7UAOA280.html)
NEW YORK (AP) - Fox's postseason baseball coverage crushed the competition in the prime-time ratings last week.
The climactic seventh games of the National and American League playoffs both drew more than 26 million viewers. CBS and NBC switched to reruns to avoid competing with the popular baseball matchups.
Comparatively, the World Series matchup between the New York Yankees and the Florida Marlins was a letdown. The series' opening game was seen by 17.7 million people on Saturday, and Game 2 had 20.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.
That's still above (by 9 percent) the opening games of last year's record low-rated series between the Anaheim Angels and San Francisco Giants, however.
While the baseball ratings were an unexpected bonanza for Fox, competing networks are worried that baseball is pulling people away from the opening of a new TV season. All of the other broadcast networks had lower ratings last week than the same week in 2002.
For the week, Fox averaged 19.1 million viewers (12.1 rating, 20 share), CBS had 11.8 million (7.9, 13), NBC 9.7 million (6.6, 11), ABC 8.8 million (5.8, 10), the WB 4.3 million (2.9, 5), UPN 3.4 million (2.3, 4) and Pax TV 830,000 (0.6, 1).
NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 9.1 million viewers (6.5 rating, 13 share). ABC's "World News Tonight" had 8.4 million (6.0, 12) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7 million (5.1, 10).
A ratings point represents 1,084,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 108.4 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
For the week of Oct. 13-19, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: American League Championship Series, Game 7: Boston vs. N.Y. Yankees, Fox, 27.5 million; National League Championship Series, Game 7: Florida vs. Chicago, Fox, 26.5 million; "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 21.6 million; World Series, Game 2: Florida vs. N.Y. Yankees, Fox, 20.6 million; National League Championship Series, Game 6: Florida vs. Chicago, Fox, 19.4 million; "Survivor: Pearl Islands," CBS, 19.4 million; "Everybody Loves Raymond," CBS, 18.2 million; World Series Game 1: Florida vs. N.Y. Yankees, Fox, 17.7 million; "CSI: Miami," CBS, 17.6 million; American League Championship Series, Game 4: N.Y. Yankees vs. Boston, Fox, 17.5 million.
