Yes it's another unnecessary remake of another perfectly mediocre 80s horror movie, but after some positive early reviews, I'm actually looking forward to this a bit. Fans of Supernatural should note that Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) is the lead. The 3-D angle could be fun and from the reviews they take full advantage of the possibilities, and supposedly it doesn't shy away from the red stuff (which is the bread and butter of any and all slasher flicks).
From imdb: Rated R for graphic brutal horror violence and grisly images throughout, some strong sexuality, graphic nudity and language .... yeah I'm there :).
Opens 1/16.

I'll see it, but why the 16th of Jan? Were they afraid to go against the relaunch of Friday the 13th?

A rogue miner hunts down teenagers... horror really needs to do a change of pace one of these days.
How about he hands out marshmellows he made with love and care! Oh that would be a horror film of the delicious variety.

I caught a late night showing of the 3D movie tonight. It's more like a spoof of horror movies than a real horror movie, but it's not like "Scary Movie". It's got some brutal death scenes, but some of the over the top dialogue almost seems to be winking at the audience as if to say, "we know it's cheesy but just roll with it". Failrly fun, but only worth seeing in a crowded theatre in 3D.

I've read that the 3-D effects are actually quite good in this. I'll be seeing The Wrestler this weekend since it FINALLY came to the art house theater near me, but depending on what I hear about this one I may end up seeing it next week at some point.

Just saw this. Pretty much agree with jagsfans, the 3-D was fun and saved this from being a pretty generic slasher. The kill scenes were nice and gory, and nicely incorporated the 3-D, but otherwise it's strictly a rental. Flick definitely could have used some more Tom Atkins.
I also have to say, it took a while for my eyes to adjust to the 3-D. For a good twenty minutes I felt cross-eyed watching it, but eventually I got used to it.

Horror movies these days disappoint me hard. I know this is a cheesey, over the top movie but I'm just going for the fun of 3D and have a few laughs here and there. I hope the 3D is noticeable and not just a gimmick

It's different from the old school 3-D, every scene is 3 dimensional, not just certain parts. If you take off the glasses at any time during the movie the entire screen is blurry. It takes some getting used to but it's pretty cool.

I saw this Friday. The 3d effects for the most part were pretty impressive. As for the movie...meh

I watched Crank on cable a couple weeks ago. Good idea. Horrible execution. I really have no idea what I watched. What the hell was with all the homoerotic overtones. I can't believe anybody thought it was necessary to make a sequel.
Amy Smart was the only good thing about the first one.

Saw it earlier tonight. It was fun for the 3-D and it was nice to see a hard "R" rated slasher film again.
However, the movie totally cheated with the identity of the killer.
If you want to take what happens literally, Tom was locked in that cage watching what was going on in the mine. He never has a drop of blood on him and it would be impossible to change out of all that stuff within minutes after a death without contamininating himself. If you want to believe that all the stuff you saw was from Tom's perspective, thereby making it possible to show his "normal" self being locked in the cage while his "alter ego" miner was doing the killing, then the film withheld any information where the viewer could make that guess. You didn't even find out he was in an institution until the climax of the film, and unless I missed something, the film didn't even provide an inkling of that fact prior. The reveal was weak as well with the old device of him describing things that he should not have known about. and even didn't happen until right near the end. It might have been more clever if it happened alot earlier in the film for the astute viewer to pick up on.
