I woke up this morning early and flipped the ole telly on and turned to HBO. Some show is on about a bunch of wavey orange curtains called "The Gates." People are completely mesmerized and enthralled by this amazing piece of art. So many lives were impacted by them and their blowing grace.

What the shit is that about? It looks dumb. What part is art? I just don't get it. It's orange and it looks like it is made up of department of corrections jump suits. Did anyone see this in person? Is it something you have to see to believe?

I didn't even know those stupid curtains were in central park till I looked it up. What fucking horseshit.

Watched an episode of "Six feet Under" and this art professor stated that real 'art' should disgust you.

Were you disgusted? "whaa"

Disgusted how? Like wanna throw up or think something is entirely retarded? Who can dare say what art is anyway. I worked in the sign industry for 13 years and everything we made to me was art but no one else would see it that way.

a few years back some "artist" put all these umbrellas on I-5 norf of LA in california

they were quite big and had to have cranes install most of them

some even got picked up by the wind and someone actually died watching them

serves them right for being there.

must have cost a fortune to put the stupid things up and for what?

It looks like a bunch of mushrooms. It might be nice if they had some picnic benches underneath and some grills.

I remember O&A talking about this back in 05 when they were put up.
Opie went to the park and actually saw them if I remember correctly.

That was done by the same people that did the gates in NYC.

art is what it is. ive been an artist my entire life, yet people have no idea what art really is.

if your not a "fine artist" or as i like to call them "picture painters" your a kook or just not an artist... it irritates me

So what does it take to be this great artist? Okay, I would like to cover the Empire State Building in chicken cutlets. Sound good to anyone?

Banksy, one of the world's most infamous graffiti artists, has this to say about Art:

Art is not like other culture because its success is not made by its audience. The public fill concert halls and cinemas every day, we read novels by the millions and buy records by the billions. We the people, affect the making and the quality of most of our culture, but not our Art.

The Art we look at is made by only a select few. A small group create, promote, purchase, exhibit and decide the success of Art. Only a few hundred people in the world have any real say. When you go to an Art gallery you are simply a tourist looking at the trophy cabinet of a few millionaires.

Just draw a Cambells soup can and everyone will call it genius.

Yup. This was a big topic on the show when The Gates went up.

Boy I sucked at Photoshop back then :)

Art is suppose to effect you or move you. The artist pushes their emotion into the artwork and the viewer will hopefully feel that emotion, or maybe something entirely new.

But my rule of thumb is, if you have to ask if something is art because you feel nothing: It's probably not art.

Just because something is out there and called art, doesn't mean it's good art.
