Despite the fact that I declare myself a huge fan of film all the time, there's still a shitload out there that I simply haven't gotten around to seeing yet. Until 3 minutes ago, Blade Runner was one of them.

I don't need to heap any more praise on it, because everyone who has seen it already knows what my reaction was - something along the lines of "nothing like this will ever be made as perfectly."

What I would like to know are some of the opinions from people who have seen it evolve over the years - I think there are something like six or seven versions of the film including the Ridley Scott-approved Final Cut, which is the one I just saw. It seems like this is the one film that, unlike every other classic that ends up getting changed around and edited (the Star Wars original trilogy, E.T., etc.) the edits to Blade Runner were all good calls.

Aside being great generally, the effects in Blade Runner still are among the best I've ever seen. And I'm not even an "effects" guy.

It's Ridley Scott's greatest film and that's even including Alien.

the noticeable difference to me between the Final Cut and the US theatrical versions are the deletion of the narration and the insertion of the unicorn dream sequence

I liked the narration. I missed it when they did the directors cut. Glad I can still get the original. Blade Runner is the best sci-fi ever, imo.

Nope. It was cut for the 10th anniversary version.
Haven't seen the newest cut yet but I've never seen a bad version of it.
The difference between the Director's Cut and the Final Cut is barely noticable. It's mostly just remastered.

The vision of the future being dirty and crowded is more realistic to me than any other I've ever seen, usually the[ant's "lucky" voice] future [/ant's "lucky" voice] is squeeky clean, everybody's happy and robots do all the work. In Bladerunner the suspension of disbelief is instant and total.

Easily the finest film of everyone involved. Ridley Scott, Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Edward James Olmos and Daryll Hannah. Yes even better than Splash. :action-sm

I know how you feel about being a film fan but missing some movies. There are plenty of movies I've never seen. I just watch "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" a few months ago and loved it. Listed are some I've never seen, but I'm sure there are plenty more.

Welcome to the big leagues, junior. I saw this movie over twenty years ago when it was a new release in a movie theatre... and even at sixteen-years-old, I knew I had seen something special... something that would stay with me for the rest of my life.

Compare this work of art with the mind candy crap like your Angel and your Buffy, and you'll understand why I won't waste my time with such dreck.

Almost forgot: the Final Cut did a digital fix for the shot of Joanna Cassidy's stunt double in an awful wig going through the plate glass window - you used to be able to tell it was a completely different person.

Casablanca- it's ok but haven't seen it in awhile
Citizen Kane- fantastic
Spartacus- Never saw
The Graduate- excellent
The Sting- excellent
Network- it does hold up amazingly well

I'm a huge Citizen Kane fan. I think it's a brilliant film and is as watchable as something like Goodfellas. I completely disagreed with Otto and George when they said the 1930s gangster films were better.

Out of curiosity Dave, what's your favorite Welles movie? I thought his version of The Trial was fantastic, and that's probably my favorite work of literature. I haven't seen it in years but I liked Mr. Arkadian. There's also Touch of Evil which is another must-see. The amazing The Third Man doesn't count since he didn't direct that. His work as Unicron doesn't count either, sorry.

If Transformers and The Third Man don't count, then I have to go with Touch of Evil

I saw the original version when I was a little kid and remember being bored to tears. It completely went over my head. Recently saw the "final" or whatever version was re-released last year, and was finally able to appreciate its artistry. It's one of those rare films that doesn't look dated in the least. However, it's a fairly uneventful movie, the story is pretty simplistic and it all unfolds rather quickly (despite the laid back pacing). It falls into the category of what people call a "thinking man's sci-fi", even though I didn't find the themes all that deep. Alien is far more entertaining, but I would say Blade Runner is a visually superior film.

Stop your silliness, mister. Angel and Buffy are nothing more than tediously long commercials for The Gap and Axe body spray. The target audience for those two ridiculous shows is tweener and teen girls and therefore the writing for said shows is little more than puerile dreck.

Angel and Buffy. :icon_roll Ugh... the names alone could give you The Gay Cancer.

Man up and wise up and go discover some real writing talent...

HBO's Deadwood and FX's The Shield... especially Season 5 with Forrest Whitaker.

Good to see your opinion is at least informed. Did you base it solely on the titles of the shows? You sound like Ron criticizing anything that's animated.

Ridley Scott - Alien was better, but it's close. Kingdom of Heaven is actually his best work as a director, in my opinion.
Harrison Ford - Ok, stop it. Whatever Star Wars became, the first one is still a classic and Harrison Ford's best performance.
Rutger Hauer - I'll give you that one because I honestly can't name another decent movie he's done. Well, I liked him in the Hitcher, but I'll admit that's just silly.
Darryl Hannah - Now you're being silly. Again, her filmography isn't that stellar, but check her out in a very underrated movie - 'Memoirs of an Invisible Man'. Also, she was naked in 'Dancing at the Blue Iguana', so that's got to count for something. My favorite performance of hers is Kill Bill 1 and 2, of course.
Edward James Olmos - You really need to watch the Battlestar Gallatica TV show. Or Stand and Deliver. Or both.

Casablanca - Never liked it.
Citizen Kane - Never saw it.
Spartacus - Great, great movie. Almost still holds up, kind of.
The Graduate - Dustin Hoffman is terrible in this movie. Probably one of my least favorite actors.
The Sting - Love it
Network - One of my all time favorite movies.

You think I should sit down and watch all of the Buffys and Angels before I pass judgement? Uh yeah... right after I sign up for a lifetime subscription to Teen Beat magazine, I'll be sure to do that. Sure I will.

Oooo... look at that boy... he's dreamy. I wonder what product he uses on his hair.

Yeah well... I guess if your intellect and attention span is geared for half-hour episodes of pretty people vampire soap operas targeted at the Clearasil crowd, it stands to reason that you'd have trouble making it through a complex and cerebral feature-length movie.

walked out of the movie (and snuck into Poltergeist) when it first came out. I was expecting wookies and spaceships shooting lasers at each other. Re-watched it in college and loved it. Saw the Final Cut at the Zeigfeld (sp) recently and it's good to see they fixed the scene with joanna cassidy (it used to be so obvious it was a dude dressed in women's clothing running through the glass). The narration always stunk though. completely unnecessary. As was the 'happy ending' of them driving off, which was just b-roll of the shining. Definitely one of the best movies i've ever seen
