I cannot get enough of western type movies. I would say that my time frame would be mid 1700's like "last of the Mohicans" and "drums along the mohawk" I'll even through in mel gibson's " the patriot". Up until about 1910-1920 with movies like "little big man" , Judge Roy bean"," legends of the fall "and I'll even throw in "Sgt York"
I love all of Eastwoods, some more than others
The outlaw Josie Wales
Two mules for sister sarah
are probsbly my favorites.
Anybody else a western fan

no.......
But, I have in the past stayed up and watched Legends of the Fall and wept like a bitch (having kids will do that to ya).
.....in addition, The Last of the Mohicans has one of the best endings ever.
That being said, I guess I'll agree with ya.

Only recently (in the last two years) took the dive into classic Westerns.
Eastwood can do almost no wrong with everything from "Fistfull of Dollars" (Brilliant Sergio Leone directing) to "High Plains Drifter" (Cool story, Mono lake is an almost surreal location) to "The Unfogiven" (like a send off of his Man-With_no_name character).
Barely scratched th surface with John Wayne Westerns with "The Searchers".
And "Silverado" was good for an 80's Western movie.
There are TONS I still want to check out. Any recommendations?

The middle to late 1700's were filled with Indian wars. The flintlock rifle was invented in 1680.
Go watch movies like rogers rangers, drums along the mohawk, last of the mohicans, the fighting Kentukians.
Those were all staged in the late 1700's.

Two must see westerns:
Once Upon A Time In The West (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064116/) (Directed By Sergio Leone, who did most of the old Eastwood "spaghetti" westerns.)
The Wild Bunch (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065214/) (Bloody Sam Peckinpah)
Another more recent, kind of laid back western I really liked was Open Range (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0316356/), with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall. The ending is one of my favorite shoot outs that I can remember.

Terror of/at Tiny Town
Star wars happened way before the 1700's
Me and my daughter watched terror of tiny town a couple of weeks ago. We were cracking up at how high the steps and swinging doors were. They had to get on all fours like babies to get up the steps.

Any "Best Of' list without a Randolph Scott Western is not a true list. I own all but 2 of Scott's Westerns. I actually had to order about 10 of them from a bootlegger in Australia because they're not available here. I dont have a favorite Randolph Scott Western because as soon as I like one more than another, the Western Channel plays it over & over. A safe bet would be "Ride The High Country" or "Shoot Out At Medicine Bend" w/ James Garner. Also Sugarfoot and anything with Gabby Hayes.
Glen Ford had great Westerns too. I always watch the Violent Men even after seeing it 20x.
Gary Coopers westerns are all good too.
John Wayne's efforts are always good, even those old Zane Gray Theatres.
Any Clint Eastwood movie is good especially the Sergio Leone's.
Any movie where Lee Van Cleef gets killed.
Any movie where Lee Van Cleef lives.
Jim Brown made a few good ones but stay away from Mario Van Peebles westerns.
Burt Reynolds made a few great ones like "Navajo Joe" and "100 Rifles"
I just watched Bob Hope in Alias Jesse James...pretty funny
Lash LaRue and Fuzzy Jones are on sometimes, they're OK
Walter Brennan played the best Judge Roy Bean BTW...
Hell I even like Roy Rogers & Gene Autry.
Then you have Bat Masterson & Maverick which are back on the air, as is Big Valley. (Linda Evans WOO WOO WOO!)
Westerns Fuckin RULE!!!!!
[Edit] I liked Appaloosa too. Ed Harris understands Westerns.
Back To The Future lll too. I like when he punches out Biff into a pile of shit.
Also Terence Hill's Trinity series especially "My Name Is Nobody"

I saw possibly the worst one last night.."The Sundance Woman"..presumbly about The Sundance Kid's wife/Woman..Aweful Production value..one scene she and this guy are in the dunes..you can clearly see that the guy is wearing an old school pair of nike running shoes.

Unforgiven is my favorite film ever made.
High Noon remains a classic.
Also, The Proposition is a great fucking movie. It's a western with an Australian setting, and much grittier and more realistic than what a Western usually is.
And, of course, the Deadwood series.

So by that logic what do you call movies like " the good the bad and the ugly" or outlaw Josey wales" ? Southerns, since most of the action in those movies happen in the south.

Stayed up to watch Appaloosa last night, or however it is spelled. Ed Harris and Viggo are great actors. The action was fantastic, the story building until Renne Zewelleger showed up. Not only is she ugly, her shrunked up face is hideous, no body, and she SUCKS the fat one as a actress. God did she screw up a great potential of a movie.
Why Kenny Chennsey decided he had to write songs about her and then marry her is beyond me. She is a talentless piece of meat.
I'm still pissed she ruined this movie. And Ed Harris directed it, so I want to kick him in the nuts as well. I want me 2.5 hours back.

I'm working on some new Spaghetti Western DVD's. WIlliam SHatner made one called "The White Commanche" and if you're a Shatner fan it's a must see! The movie sucks but it's great to see SHatner play 2 opposite roles. One as a cowboy and the other as a drug crazed Apache. The apache Shatner had the same haircut as the cowboy? At one point he tells his brother "You would be faster if you didn't take Peyote" This movie would be real funny on peyote.
Minnesota Clay is a great spaghetti western too. Love the realistic ending. More westerns should end like this one.
"The Fighting Fists OF Shanghai Joe" is a SW combining Kung Fu and cowboys. Shanghai Joe is racially insulted throughout the entire movie and he beats the shit out of everyone eventually. Fucking great western! Great soundtrack too. Must see!
I still havent started the Django series but those are always good. I have a set from Blue-Underground.com. They threw the Django name around alot on supposedly bad projects, but what the "experts" say is a bad western may not be what I would call bad.
If you like the SW genre I would suggest the 20 movie pack with Lee Van Queef on the cover. Its from MillCreekEnt.com.
Another is from St Clair Vision. 13 hours - 9 movies - 3 DVD's. It includes Grand Duel, This Man Cant Die, It Can Be Done Amigo, Minnesota Clay, Death Rides A Horse, Hellbenders, White Commanche etc...
Why does the Western Channel show the same Randolph Scott movies over & over & over. Show Caribou Trail, or Westbound, or Sugarfoot, Walking Hills, Shoutout At Medicine Bend, ANYTHING. Why do they always show Tall T & Buchanan Rides Alone!!!! I love them but its like listening to commercial radio where they play the same song over & over.
