...And I'm going to kill everyone I see. My hands are shaking, my head hurts, I'm angry all the time, I'm coughing up phlegm like it's a fucking race. I've had to apologize to co-workers for jumping down their throats. I've even got into stupid arguments on this very board.

Wacking off as we speak....

But seriously, I'm not sure about the patch or gum. The physical addition is killing me and introducing more nicotine into my system seems counter productive. The "habit" doesn't seem to be getting to me as much as the chemical.

How much does the Zyban run ya? My income is what you might call "limited." Stupid radio.

Everyone has told me it takes about two weeks for all the phlegm to leave the 'ol lungs and for the shakes and such to stop. Tick tock tick tock.....

Go to the library and check out G. Gordon Liddy's book titled "Will" , It may make you feel ashamed that you would let anything get in the way of something that you really want to accomplish. Maybe the push you need if you feel like changing your mind about quitting.

Good luck fellas. My girlfriend finally quit after like 5 attempts and used Zyban to get it done. It's been almost a year for her.

I was a heavy smoker about 12 years ago. I smoked 2.5 packs a day of the good old Camel non-filtered. I quit cold-turkey when I was 21 because one day I hacked up a ton of this...black shit is the only way I can describe it. It freaked me out so much that I stopped that day.

Hang in there and again, good luck.

Don't procrastinate. If you want to quit, do it now. Putting it off gives you time to make excuses. Just throw out all your cigarettes and smoking paraphanelia (ashtrays, lighters, etc.) and stop. In three weeks, the hardest part will be over. Then the hard part starts: never picking up another smoke.... ever. Not even one. Cuz that will start you up again. I sincerely wish you all luck (even you BIV).

criminal? yes , he will freely admit that. Douche? no ,not in my opinion The man has character and values that he will not be swayed from, maybe to the point of being obsessive. I was in high school during watergate and the way he was portrayed by the media did not do him justice. How many people do you know that speck fluent latin along with 6 other languages? Read the book , form your own opinion , thats what i did.....not saying he does brilliant radio, but it's ok Certainly not shock or cringe radio

You can do it Biv. I've just made the 3rd week myself. But I was mentally preparing myself before hand by telling myself "I have to quit smoking" over and over. I got sick 3 weeks ago and haven't felt like having one since. I also looked at the financial gain and figued I'd save about $320 a month-almost a truck payment. Good Luck.

Definatly worked. While i was taking it, I never even craved a smoke. Its the wierdest thing. Your just not interested in smoking. At least that was the case with me. I did zyban for around 4 weeks then went on patches for 2 months just to make sure.

Headaches are worse, teeth hurt from so much gum chewing...but I've discovered lots of tasty flavors of surger free gum. Still getting dizzy from time to time and the seething anger is worse. Thanks for the support from you and everyone else.

I've been wanting to quit for a while now just don't have to chesnuts to try because I know how fucking hard it's going to be.

This was my issue. This is the first time I have tried to quit in seven years. After ten years of smoking the habit is all encompassing.

Try this, start small. Stop smoking indoors and in the car for a week. Then only allow yourself 5 drags of each cig for a few days. Then quit.

I dont smoke nor do I care for it, but i know my dad used to smoke about 4 packs of Parliament a day (back when cigarrettes used to cost like 2 bux a pack, im sure you guys miss those days) It took him two heart attacks to decide to quit. Its better now cuz for the past 10 years this house hasnt stunk like cigarrettes and there are no more cig burns all over furniture and carpet from stray ashes. The one thing I do like is whenever i go up to New Hampshire I come back down with a shitload of cartons to sell to my friends.

Well, Day 5.
Still okey dokey. Headaches have chilled out a bit though I am still getting dizzy spells. The amount of gum I have been chewing is crazy, nuts, insane but it seems to be working. I've taken to putting the piece of Trident in my mouth and rolling up the wrapper into a tube. i hang that from my lip and "Drag" on it. Seems to help alot as well.

I have purposely been putting myself into "smoking situations" so I can beat them and give myself a phycological boost. Last night (this morning for you day walkers) I had three big 'ol shots of whiskey. I figure I faught through the whiskey cig cravings, the rest should be easy.

*Grabs hand to stop the shaking*

Okay, maybe not easy.......

I quit 2 years ago after smoking for 15 years. I tried many times but found what worked for me. I came back from a 4 day bender with the boys and was just hung over and smoked out. You know that feeling the morning after you are up all night boozing and smoking. Gross. I waited until about the middle of the day so I could get that morning smoke in, but not be that far from going to bed to get a head start. I then used the patch for about a month.

I just kept thinking 'just don't have the next one.' I didn't worry about next week, or even the next day. Just don't have the very next one.

Good luck. Hang in there.

Oh, and by the way, the cravings never go away. For the rest of your life you will always want one. You will just be able to deal with saying no a whole lot better.

I am almost @ day thirty being without smokes. I am doing the gum. I love the regular flavor nicorette, just don't get the generic cvs brand. It has been making my gums bleed. Smoking was my favorite thing in the world, but for some reason this time has been easy--I just pop in a piece and hold my breath, the craving goes away after about 5 awful minutes. Running has been helping too, but strangely enuf, I wack off like 3 or 4 times a day now. Just remember: no such thing as one.

CrazyMrPoopSex
03-10-2005, 05:01 AM
Definetly no such thing as one! I've smoked a pack a day for 7 years. I quit once for 3 months and one day had just one. I was back to full pack a day in about a week.
I'm gonna quit again soon. It was easier than I thought. now I know not to have that "one".

Day #8
This morning (my last night, so confusing when you work overnights) I almost broke. Some asshole ripped my front license plate off of my car (luckily, he left it on the ground). The parts I need to fix it have to be special ordered from the dealer and I ended up having to use wire to put it back on. I got so irrationally pissed that I spent 20 minutes pacing in my apartment, fighting the urge to smoke. I won. My cravings seem to have been set back a couple of days and the headaches have returned full force. But, as someone said, I just don't have the next one and pop another piece of Trident.

BTW, for those of you getting ready to stop smokeing, Target sells big variety packs of Trident gum for $1.50. 40 pieces in four flavors. Variety, I have found, is very important for this method. You will also constantly be thirsty and have the munchies. Invest in salad fixings to reduce any wieght gain and lots of bottled water. If you have to have soda (I do) 7-11 is your savior. "Be" the Double Gulp.....

Drink water and lots of it. Drink til your sick. Everytime you want to smoke drink a big glass. Big gulps. I don't know why but forcing it really seemed to relieve some of the clenching of the teeth for me. When I quite smoking I pretty much had to give up drinking too. Wasn't completely a bad thing, I prob would have had a DWI by now (embarrassed to say). Does anyone have nightmares that they started again? I have them once a year or so. Its gotten to a point where I ask myself if I'm dreaming and convince myself I'm not and panic myself awake.
Best thing for you!! Good luck. You WILL feel better.

QUIT DRINKING??!!?? Dear God, you are a crazy man!
Dizzyness is not a frequent anymore, though headaches persist...could be some of the fore-mentioned alcohol, though.

Not chewing as much gum, so I guess that is a good sign. Still sucks a whole lot, but it's easier to say no. There are still moments, often wierd ones like going to bed, that are just as bad as Day 1.

Still no nico gum or patches or pills or any damn thing.

Lungs feel better too, though the phlegm is still so bad at times that I feel like I'm drowning.

And so thirsty, always so thirsty......

I've been trying to quit for a year. I even tried the patch and the gum but I couldn't stop smoking on the patch. I'd get sick but I'd still do it. I was clean for about 2 years but then I started chipping, then my ex-roomates hooked me on clove cigarettes, which are truly of the devil. Can't get enough. Also just started a boring ass new job where everyone goes out once an hour for smoke breaks. I will quit...one day.

So Biv, keep up the good work! I envy you.

Good luck BIV! I quit smoking 2 years ago, it was pretty brutal. Especially when I work part time at a bar, and live with somebody who smokes nonstop. Personally, the way I did it was to not smoke at times that I always lit up (like the second I walked in the house after work). As soon as you get out of those habits, it gets easier. I'm not gonna say it's easy, cause it's not, but it can be done. Good luck

Trident (I prefer bubblegum and fruit) and willpower.
Roll the gumwrappers into a suckable stem. You suck in the flavor. Helps with the bad cravings.

3 weeks, four days.
Going strong. I think it's over, Johnny (I mean the cigs, not the effort). And good riddance. Should have never started.

Sounds like a good idea, count me in too. I quit for a little over a year until recently when I took the bar exam. There was just too much stress. If it had been a one day test it wouldn't have been so bad but I caved after the first day and I'm getting to the point where I am ready to quit again. Christ almighty, if you want to smoke then smoke, if you want to stop, then stop smoking! I smoked for a long time and now only have one once in a while (usually if I'm at a bar) so I can relate to that plight, but unlike what so many people like to say, it's not an addiction, it's a habit. Heroin is an addiction. If you're trying to quit permanantly, every time you feel like lighting up...don't. Eat something you hate the taste of, eventually you'll associate your cravings with something to avoid.

JoeyDVDZ
04-04-2005, 03:47 PM
I don't usually disagree with you, Klor, but here I have to. Smoking is most certainly an addiction. Perhaps not as immediately lethal as heroin, but an addiction nonetheless. Some specialists have said that the withdrawal, which is more emotional and psychological than physical, can be more devastating than a mere physical addiction. The physical, once beaten, is gone. Psychological addictions are deeply ingrained in the mind, and can be a bitch to beat.

kloraferm
04-04-2005, 05:06 PM
I just don't see a developed physiological dependency as the same as lack of willpower to avoid something that someone simply "wants". An addiction is a situation where the person needs whatever they're addicted to, otherwise they'll become severely ill (see "Man With The Golden Arm"). With a habit such as smoking, the person can become irritable while stopping, yet not writhing in pain because the body is actually trying to expel severe toxins. Although there are valid points on both sides, and I never claimed to be an authority on it, it is certainly a debateable issue.

I don't think that any health professional would consider this a "debatable issue". Addiction to nicotene is an addiction just as any other addiction, be it alcohol, heroin, painkillers, etc. Not to be argumentative, but to say that smoking isn't an addiction is naiive and just plain wrong. Nicotene is a substance that develops dependency just like any of the above. We're not talking about being "addicted" to Milk Duds here, you know.

Leave it to me to stumble upon this thread on day #1 of MY quitting smoking adventure...

Leave it to me to stumble upon this thread on day #1 of MY quitting smoking adventure...

You too, huh? I'm on my first full day smoke-free, cold turkey. No patches, no gum, no nuthin. Had my last smoke at about 2 pm yesterday. I'm starting to crave one now though. That sort of sucks.

Worried about my blood pressure... It's high already and I will lose my job if it rises any more.

Step on in the BP-lowering plan. Also includes (*gasp*) exercise and losing weight.

Unfortunately for me my mother has high BP and takes medication for it... Damn my bad genes!

I half agree with you. It is all about willpower. But to say there isn't a real addiction there is just, I'm sorry, ignorant. Nicotine is as addictive, physically, as Heroine.

You should have seen me my second week. Shakes, sweats, stomache cramps, headaches, dizzyness (still getting the head aches). I went into 20 minute fits where I just couldn't function.

As for it being a toxin, Nicotine in it's pure form is as deadly as cianide.

Couple this with a sever psycological addiction and you see why it takes the average smoker 8 tries to quit smoking. The average for heroin and crack is three.

I have a room in my apartment where I would smoke, an atrium with lots of windows. There is nothing more frustrating then having to conciously stop myself from walking into that room ten times in half as many minutes.
You'd think I was a retard with the conversations I'd have with myself.
*walks towards door*
"No damnit, you are not smoking"
*starts to walk towards door*
"No damnit"
*starts to walk towards door*
"You don'teven have any fucking cigs, knock it off!"
*starts to walk towards door*
"God Damnit!"
*puts more gum in mouth, looks for food*

But it IS all about willpower. Pull a Nancy Reagan and lop off a breast...er...I mean just say no to the next one. And remember, once you are hooked, there is no such thing as just one cigarette.

Big props to all of you who are quitting. I'm glad I could be an inspiration, if that is the case. If it gets hard, come here and vent. You'd be surprised how much it helped.

And princess, if you need any extra "support", just let me know...:icon_wink :action-sm :icon_roll

Yeah, The last time I quit (for little over a year) for me it was in the car. Whenever I went on a long trip, which was often (I now live in New Haven, but used to live in Jersey, and still take many much trips back there). It was the hardest thing in the world not to pull of into a rest stop and buy a pack, I even went so far as to buy a few packs and threw them out. But you and Klor are right to an extent, it is all about will power. As much as you want one, you just have to not light up. The biggest part is that you have to be ready to quit. You have to be sick and tired of coughing all the time, waking up with a sore throat, getting winded going up a flight of stairs, etc. I you are not ready to quitn, then trying to quit will do you no good whatsoever.
It's also a good idea to set a date that way you get ready to quit. So for some of the people on this thread it is the 11th!
I'm glad that I could have my 100th post be on something substantial!

Day #3 begins today. Last night the first troubling signs of problems ahead were observed. Involuntary twitches in my legs on the bus ride home, and woke up this morning at 1:30 am, unable to sleep. Didn't have a clue why until I remembered I hadn't had a smoke in over 50 hours. Another fun thing. I've been coughing already due to a cold, which actually prompted this not smoking decision, but now I'm getting very phlegmmy (sp?) due to all the crap in my lungs loosening up. Ironic, one coughs more from NOT smoking than from smoking!

Still going strong though. Gonna beat this thing.

Did that about two years ago, it does help with the cravings, and has the added bonus of pissing off everyone who thought the smpking habit was disgusting. It killed two Petersons with one fishing trip. The only downside is that there were always some nasty sores in my mouth and I felt as if my jaw was gonna fall off. But if you can deal with that then like i said it helps with the cravings

Keep holding on guys, the first two weeks are a bitch. Unfortunately, Princess, I think you reset your clock with that cig. Stay strong. The stressfull situations are the ones that break the habit. That is also when you can prove to yourself that you are done. I would suggest having a shot or two (or beers) before going out or even tonight. Trying to break the habits of both 1. Smoking with alcohol and 2. Smoking in a bar at the same time can be rough.

I forgot to mention the sleeplessness. It blows.
The phlegm is pretty nasty, Huh Joey? It gets worse before it gets better. All sorts of new colors and textures.
Don't skip walking away from your desk. Take my advice about the gum. Get a pack of Trident, put the gum in your mouth, roll up the wrapper into a little, suckable tube.
Go outside and take you smoke break with the gum. Suck on the tube instead of a cig.
Get a Zippo, don't put any fluid in it. Play with it, flick it, etc. No fluid, no flame, no smoking.

And don't start with the chewing. You will transfer the habit.

The big thing here guys is don't avoid the habit...confront it. Force yourself to do what you did while you were smoking and embrace the fact that you are not. That whole concept actually increased my willpower.

"Do not try to stop thinking about smoking...that is impossible. Instead, only realize the truth...there is no smoking."

All this being said, I went through a serious nic fit on Wednesday. *sigh* One day at a time. Five weeks without on Sunday.

Even now, more than seven months later, I still get cravings; fortunatley, however, they only really happen when I drink. I strongly recommend mints, gum (Eclipse Cherry Chill is my favorite) and Ricolla lozenges to get over the cravings.

When I was in Iraq, we smoked more. Even people who weren't smokers, did so.

I quit 2 weeks ago and it seems a lot tougher this time then last year when I quit for almost a year. I started a few months again and eventually started to smoke even more than I did before. I am using the patch and it does take the edge off. I went on a diet and lost almost 25 pounds as I figured I would gain some like I did last year.

After the first week though it has gotten easier and am now can wait and/or not wear the patch for awhile and only then put it on when I think about a Cig. I just gotta remember that my Father passed away when he was 47 from Lung Cancer and I am now 45.

BIV good luck and keep at it. It will be worth it in the end and the cravings get less over time. Wish there was a way I could help you and all whole are going through this ordeal.

Oh yeah Kloraferm and any who are thinking of quitting I will give a bit of advice that helped me but may not help all. So apologize.

I chose a day about two weeks away and started to think negatively of cigarettes. Every cig I lit up I said to myself over and over how horrible the smell, taste, and time It was wasting to smoke and also tell myself that on that date I had set up that I couldn't wait to quit that day and wish it would hurry and get here.

When the day came and I awoke I through any and all smokes and smokings things away and just said thank god this day is here and now I continiously say how proud I am of kicking this nasty habit and how disgusting the cigs were.

Good luck to all who have quit and also Good luck to any who plan on it.

I will be 25 on sept 12. started smoking early 1991. I was 10......$1.25 a pack...in May of 2000, my ex g/f nagged me to quit, how ironic that she now smokes 2 packs a day, but i decided to choose a day and quit, i smoked my ass off til that day...midnight came, I threw the cig i was puffin on out the window along with my lighter and a half of pack of newport 100's.
The real test was that my next call was to take a car from Trenton, to Newark. The tow truck blew up on the turnpike coming home....4 hours in the middle of the night, and when we got back, all 4 ppl in the office were smoking...
Bought my new truck on June 22, 2000. My uncle on my moms side passed away from cancer on June 26, 2000. The stress of the truck and ins payment, plus my mom freaking that she lost another sibling got to me, I asked the cashiers at the 7-11 i frequented to NOT SELL ME SMOKES when i quit, well that nite they gave me a cig...
Been smokin since...at least 2 packs a day!!!!
My current g/f tried to quit a month ago, and failed...prolly cuz i was still smoking...I think it may be time for another try....AUGUST 15.....This way i can get through the stress of writing those pesky $300 house ins, $800 Truck ins and $600 property tax checks and mailing them on the 10th. This thread, which I just found tonight will be my inspiration, well that and saving over $600 a month....$6.50 a pack at the corner store....$5.48 at Quick Check and WAWA

Yeah, it's been seven and a half months for me (quit New Years Eve), and while things have gotten easier, I still occasionally have nic fits (usually when drinking) and smoking dreams.

It is definitely tougher this time than the first time I quit, which was senior year of college. I quit before for three and a half years, but started again stupidly right near the bar exam...made it virutally all the way through law school, but then got drunk at a party, smoked a cig, and before the night was over had already bought a pack. This time quitting is MUCH harder, but I am glad that I'm not smoking.

However, I definitely have gained weight and am eating more, which blows. One thing at a time. :icon_wink

It's all mental at this point thats the fucked up part. after a week it's all in your head.
Studies have suggested that addiction actually rewires parts of your brain. This means when you do certain activeties it fires electrical impulses to the part of your brain that wants to smoke. By not smoking, you wither these connections. Like any other aspect of your brain and body, the less you use it the more it atrophies.

It explains alot of things. You eat alot, so the connections between food and cigs are strong so the connections are strong from lots of use. The reason alcohol has such strong connections is it builds it's own as well. Double the connections. That's why these type of impulses are so hard to shake. Add stress to this list as well.

On the flip side, the unexpected cravings and the cravings that come years later are triggered by connections that are not used very often. Like an old smoking buddy you havn't seen in a long time or the loss of a loved one. It never had a chance to atrophy because you were never faced with it.

I may be getting the details wrong, but that's the basic. And that's just mental addiction. Physical addiction has another whole set of problems. Nicotine has the dubious honer of being one of the most addictive substances for both your body and mind and having equal addictiveness on both fronts.

Nasty little drug.

Well, on Sun nite at midnite, i threw my cigs out, cold turkey, did ok the first 36 hours, but that is when the headache, dizziness and blurry vision started, stress last 2 days, tow truck was down all yesterday and part of today with a fuel problem. At hour 40, I was on the road, had a car hooked, and I almost wrecked the truck, I did not see the car I almost hit, headache was so back i could not think. world was spinning....I stopped and got a pck of cigs, smoked two and was good. Saw my g/f at like 5 and gave her the rest. going tomorrow to get Zyban. Can't not function and be on the road.....so by the weekend i will be smke free. I tried, and if i didn't have to work today and tomorrow, I would have dealt with those symptoms til hour 72....I would have just stayed home......congrats Sting and lucky good luck all.....

Still good here. I even been to several casinos here in Nevada. (and done very well I might add). Did well and only one time I had a problem was when I had 2 smokers on both sides of me and they were smoking heavy and their smoke was really getting in my face. Even if I was still smoking it would of bothered me.

I think I may be a former smoker now. It is so cool that I am going to splurge on myself half the winnings I got here. I do hope everyone else is doing as well. I will say that it has been rough but well worth it.

Well people, I have read the whole thread and I have to congratulate all that have quit today and beyond.   . I haven't smoked cigaretts in In over 3 years but I followed Dr Phills sugestion of replaceing it with something else. I now smoke cigars! < I don,t inhale either. I didnt smoke anything for 9 months before picking up cigars. I cant really say I have any desire to stop smoking cigars. BTW, I hate the smell of cigaretts now and cant even picture myself ever smoking cigaretts ever again. Im not here defending tabacco use in any way as I am aware that Cigar smoking has its negatives but I still say for myself that its safer than cigaretts in one aspect. My lungs are alot clearer and I am no longer short winded. Hell I was even able to get a 300.000 dollar life insurance policy for a non smoker, and I told them when i signed up that I smoked Cigars. They came and took blood work and BP readings and got back to me in a week with a non smokers plan that only cost me 400 a year. The only draw back is that I have to go for a teeth cleaning 4 times a year intead of twice. I also quit smoking cigars about three times , one beacuse I was sick and the other two times due to hospital stays with out any problems of heavy pysical withdrawals that ciggaretts give you.

A shit load eh?

So your spending almost $30 a carton (even at Wal-Mart) for "good" quality cigarettes, IE: Marlboro, Parliament, Winston, Camels? I think you are mistaken sir. We like the rest of the country have a high and ever rising 'sin tax' on cigarettes. It's not like buying clothes, food, or even a car here. If you really have this much of an expandable income let me know the next time you come this way, I want to "hang out."

Ego
08-21-2005, 09:53 AM
Umm...not sure if this matters to anyone here, but I figured it was worth mentioning based on the subject matter.

I've never smoked a cigarette, and don't plan to ever. Everyone else in my family smokes, and have tried to get me to do it at one time or another. I've never tried any illegal drugs, even though everyone else in my family has at some point. I waited until I was 21 to try drinking. I tried it, and just didn't quite understand what I was supposed to get out of it, so that habit never developed in me.

I really wish I understood addiction, but I've never had to deal with it myself. My dad is a pill popping junkie, but that's his issue. If he wants to destroy what he's got left of his life by overusing his prescription meds and supplementing them with street shit, that's on him.

Please don't mistake this as me claiming to be above anyone. I have been on prescribed antidepressants since I was 15, and I do have a genuine desire to someday reduce or eliminate my use of them. But I refuse to do anything that would jeapordize my progress. I hated who I was and what I had been up until then, and I'm still angry at myself in some instances for not having advanced farther in my life, or for not being able to do more to prevent certain things from happening. Whether or not my confidence is placed correctly, I still feel that the advice and guidance of my doctors and psychologist, along with my own positive progress, will someday get me to a point where I won't have to take these medicines anymore.

Not that it means anything to anyone, but I'm just sayin'...

I hate pills, I have been saying for years that medication does not do shit. Now I really want to quit, so I figure cold turkey is not happening this time, so I take this stupid zyban stuff. Still getting nic fits bad as ever, been almost a week. I tried to quit this past monday. will say though that as opposed to going through a carton and a half of cigarettes in a week, I have only bought 4 packs. Going to try again tonight. See how long I can last. 72 hours, that's all I need. Really don't know what else to do. Maybe hypnotism, some people say it works......

I quit 3.5 weeks ago and still crave cigarettes. I will, however, never smoke them again. I used patches to get my mind off the hand motion of smoking for about 1-2 weeks. In that time I still smoked occasionally, and went to bars alot. After 2 weeks I quit the patch and still continue to go to bars and drink (more actually than before) and do not smoke at all - full withdrawl. My philosphy is this - if you have to suffer through a withdrawl, each day that passes makes you think 'well I didnt suffer for this long to go back to smoking'. Worked for me at least.

My dad and hubby almost told me to have a cig by Wednesday night, but I realized that if I had a smoke, all those other problems would still exist, and I'd be a failure on top of it. Why you ask?

AND I CAN HELP YOU ALL QUIT!!

2 words.

SMOKE AWAY!!!

This product gaurentees you to be smoke free in 7 days.

I smoked for 20 years. My habit varried anywhere from 1 to 3 packs a day, depending on how long the day was. I avareged 1 cig every half hour. More during stressful situations. I dont even know how many times I tried to quit and failed. I even smoked while using the patch. Ya, wasnt succesful that time.

Till I tried SMOKE AWAY. This stuff WORKS.

NO WITHDRAWL symptoms.

NO CRAVINGS

Here is what happened to me.
Day 1
I started to take the product, I tried not to smoke, but not really hard,I smoked less than a pack that day.( I had a headache all day, but I think thats because you have to give up caffiene while you are on this product.)

Day2
smoked maybe a half a pack. Felt fine

Day3
smoked 5 or 6. felt fine

day 4
smoked a couple, didnt really want to very badly just a little.
Day 5
smoked one

Day 6
none
It has been a year and a half now. I havnt had any.
I havnt had any real craving
I dont have to talk myself out of having one on a daily basis.
I dont even think about them, unless I smell one or am having a discussion about them. And I dont want them.

The downside, cigerettes REALLY FUCKING STINK. I MEAN IT , THEY SMELL AWFUL!!!!!!!
For a little while after you have quit, you will feel slightly ill when you smell them, but YOU WONT WANT ONE.
This mediates after a couple months, but to this day I prefer to not be around them.

I spent over 100 bucks on this stuff when I quit. A couple months later,I saw it in WAL-MART for around 35$. It kinda pissed me off, But not too much. It was worth it. Every penny.

Try it,it DOES work. And I dont get paid by the company in any way shape or form. I just know it worked for me.

I really wanted to quit though,so that might have helped me be successful.

I used the gum to quit. It works well (no cigs in over 1 1/2 years), but you end up being addicted to the gum. Way more expensive than smokes, that's for sure...:icon_roll

I'm on day 23...constantly walking the fence of 'fuck this' and 'don't you dare turn back now'.

The withdrawal of the first week was really sickening, but my amazement that I was able to get through even one day kept me going. After that, the excitement wore off, and it all became annoying. I still want one really badly at least 5 times a day. Only for a few minutes though. It does go away.

I was using nicorette gum so I was still getting nicotine... well I hate chewing gum, and decided to stop the gum... then I got the withdrawal symptoms which is fine except for one - sleep got disrupted.. I'd get up and couldnt go back to bed. I need my job so not sleeping is not an option.

I really didnt crave the cigarettes themselfs as I had in the past when I had quit. I just need to be awake at work.. Going to try cold turkey next month and try and get thru the week of physical withdrawal symtoms. I can handle the craves, but lack of sleep drives me nuts

I really wanted to quit though,so that might have helped me be successful.
reposting this in case any of you missed it.

Going to try cold turkey next month and try and get thru the week of physical withdrawal symtoms. I can handle the craves, but lack of sleep drives me nuts

Thinking about that physical withdrawal week is what's keeping me from slipping up right now...I can't bear the idea of going through that again.

Week 4 and it's getting easier. My husband still smoking, and I'm trying so hard not to become one of 'those people', but sometimes the smell really gets to me. Especially if he's playing his bass and a cig is just burning in the ashtray. He's cutting down, hopefully soon enough he'll decide to join me.

I rather enjoy tobacco. I've only smoked for about 5 years. I'm 28 right now...I figure I have about 15 more years to live than the average smoker, who starts at 15.

However, I ain't gonna die from cancer...no...not cancer. It'll be another tour in Iraq.....THAT....will fuckin' kill me. :icon_wink

Been smoke free since New Years Eve, haven't slipped yet (although I've had a few cigars since then). I do still get hardcore cravings (usually when drinking), but they are more and more rare. Happy to not smoke anymore, but I do say that if, God forbid, I was diagnosed with some awful incurable diesease and only had a short time to live, the first thing I would do is buy a carton and a handle of scotch. :icon_wink

ever inhale the cigar just out of habit?
thats what i did the first time i started smoking and then i went home and smoked some cigars...straight inhaled and coughed my ass off

No, I did the first time I ever had one (over 10 years ago) because I just didn't know any better. About half way through it, I got really sick, turned green and started booting all over the place, so I def learned my lesson after that.

And Biv, there is always the Kate Moss route, blowing rails in a recording studio. I hear that helps out a lot without exercising

Last cig was Fri at 11a. Had a pretty trying weekend of home improvment projects. Yelled and cussed alot but no new holes in the walls. I'm using the patch, seems to be working pretty good. There is a warning that you may have "vivid dreams" while on the patch. That's one way to put it, another would be terrifying dreams of some lunch lady looking woman chasing me with a rat as big around as my thigh. WTF! Every night some fucked up dream. Taking the patch off before bed is not an option, I used to get up in the middle of the night to smoke.

Not to be condescending (I'm really just trying to help), but it is all about willpower. You just have to make the decision and go forward with it. Mints and (non-Nicorette) gum helped, but it really boils down to wanting to quit. I was laid off while trying to quit and still didn't slip...I definitely gained weight, but no cigs.

Give it another week. You are gonna spike in about 3-4 days. Have lots of gum/mints on hand, salads, rolled up gum wrappers to breat through and whatever else you need. This time next week you will feel better. Two weeks after that you should be golden.

I was convinced I could just smoke one every few days. 2 days later I was back to 2 packs a day. The initial smoke really wasn't even that good....... I just have to keep that in mind now.

I do not see how people get 'hooked' on smoking. Last year, I smoked a pack for 4 months and then I just stopped. I just got tired of it and quit. And that was it. Why was that? I have smoked on and off and after I stop, I had no need for another one.

I've tried to quit the smoking, but my alcohol abuse problem interferes with it. As it turns out - drinking and smoking go hand in hand. Throw in a fucking pizza and I'll shoot a load in my BVDs.

Seriously - I used to be a Copenhagen chewer and managed to quit. What finally got me is that I realized that I was a slave to the shit. I HAD to chew or smoke. I had no choice about it. Then I realized that the reason that I didn't quit is that I couldn't stand up to it. Once I quit being a pussy and faced the addiction - not a problem. I just had to make the decision - withdrawls are a bitch - but they go away eventually.

Man up.

I had one about a week ago or so. It was pretty bad and fucking great at the same. I had to have smoked at least 3 or 4 in the dream and I was loving every drag. Jesus Christ, I just do not see how I could ever have trouble quitting. Everytime I have quit, I just stop and that is it. I have no urge to do it again. Maybe it is because I have not smoked long enough though. The most I smoked was a pack and a half for 4 months. Then I just quit. I did not have a single problem doing it.

Tomorrow is two weeks for me. I used Smoke away and it seemed to work. My little "system" was to switch to ultra lights, various brands going from okay to worse. Camel Ultra lights (I'm a camel lights man) to winston ultra lights, to merit UL, doral UL then like cherokee ul. I just got used to not smoking what I was used to with the camel lights. I get a craving now and then but I think it's physcological. The nicotine is supposed to be out of your system in like less than a week.

I would love a smoke right now. I just know I can't. and it's really not as bad a I thought it would be. I'm done with the Smoke away and its just stuffing my face at this point trying not to gain 10 or 20 pounds.

Wow, I widh I had known this thread existed 7 weeks ago. I quit on May 31st cold turkey like. It's a constant struggle, but I did the same thing with "Smoking Situations" My first week I went to my Poker Game, a bar in NJ and Played a gig with my band. after all that, I felt empowered to beat it and... So Far so Good.

Checking In: Over 1 year now and still not a Puff. It gets easier every day. The only thing that can beat me now is complacancy.

Tomorrow will be two weeks since I have had one.

I've had a few nights where even I was surprised that I didn't break down. Last Friday, I went out with my girlfriend and two of her friends. All of them smoke while drinking. It really didn't even bother me. When leaving the bar that night, I did take one drag off of my girl's cigarette and it was the best thing I could have done! It tasted like shit AND because I only had one drag, it wasn't enough for me to get the "benefit" of that nicotine rush.

I smoked for a good 10 years and quit cold turkey 3 years ago. Chocolate, running and working out was my savior. I mostly missed cigs while drinking, wine for the most part, but chocolate did the trick for me.
And THIS is my 700th post.

I am at something like 10 weeks, I stopped keeping track.

It is all mental. Period. I just decided that I wanted to quit more than I wanted to smoke. And just keep telling yourself that. I was a 1-2 pack a day smoker since I was 16.

Plus at the ripe old age of 26, I am realizing I am not invincible and becoming something of a hypochondriac. Waiting for that nagging cough or spot on the tongue. Fuck that.

P.S. this is my second real attempt, much easier this time.

I've attempted a few thousand times. Most of the mods here could tell you that. I'd have to say that my mental state is much better this time. I don't have nearly the stress that I've had in recent months. It defintiely helps

I found the inhaler they gave me when i had pnuemonia made it easier to smoke.

Wellbutrin rules no doubt i get an odd but common side effect when i go back to the Dr i can get the drug to counter that.

Makes it hard to pee. Closes some track or some shit other then that I stopped for about 3 weeks on it and started again cause im stupid!

I took the patch route... on it right now. Highly recommend if you are serious about quitting and looking for an "easy way." Pretty fucking expensive though, but it almost makes you quit knowing how much money you dropped on the program. Works awesome though. I just hit step 2... so around 6 weeks into it. Four more to go. I'm back on my mountain bike and can definately tell I smoked for 6 years, but it's really not as bad as I thought it would be.

I will however admit... I kind of had a relapse and feel like shit for doing it. But last weekend, I had a smoke. And I fucking hated it.... it tasted like absolute shit. So I guess it's good and bad, good because I will forever remember that shitty taste. I even drink a lot, and never get a craving for a smoke. Good luck to all.

Unless you are buying your cigarettes from Indians, it's still cheaper than smoking. I get the Target generic brand. I think a 2 week supply is about $30. When I was smoking, it was a pack a day at $5.

2 weeks of the Patch= $30
2 weeks of smoking= $70

To all you WEAKLINGS: ask your doctor about Wellbutrin. After about 3 weeks on this "wonder drug" and I just lost ANY craving for cigarettes. One day I lit one with morning coffee and I was feeling like, "...huh, I really don't want this butt right now....I'll put it in the ashtray for now and finish it later..."
The butt sat there for three weeks. That was three years ago, after 11 years of 2-3 packs every day.
Patch, gum never worked for me. But drugs, as usual, came through for me!

Midnight tonight was the last hoorah. I have been planning my quit date for about a month now. It was supposed to be October 1st, but as the date grew closer I realized that it would work better for me if it was Sunday night/Monday morning.

Here's my story. I have been a smoker for 12 years. As much as I have smoked, I've never smoked in front of my parents, co-workers or family (mainly because my dad has smoked for 45+ years). I would say that my habit has been under one pack a day for the majority of the time, but that was just my self-rationalization that I wasn't "too addicited." Lies. My friends and wife will tell you that I'm a smoker. In college I got a taste of Nat Sherman cigarrettes and became an afficianado. I was paying $6-8 per pack and managed to limit myself to less than 10 smokes a day for at least two years. After graduation, I quit for a few weeks and quickly fell back into the old habit. That was the fifth honest attempt to quit and after that I've been supporting a pack a day habit for the past 4 years with one honest attempt to quit that lasted a few days.

Recently, I was diagnosed with kidney stones for the second time in my life. I had one procedure to break up the stones and one procedure to remove the stones. As an added bonus to the weeks of pain and discomfort the urologist recommended that I have a ureteral stent inserted to prevent the stones from becoming lodged in my urinary tract. So, I finished three presciption bottles of percocet and vicotin and smoked and smoked and smoked and smoked. With all of the free drugs and extra time laying around the house it was so freaking easy to just sit around the house and smoke. In reality, I don't smoke IN my house, so I had to go outside to get my nicotine, but you get the idea.

Tomorrow is the day that I go in to have the stent removed and it is also the day that I am making a change in my life. After all of the shit that I have been through in the past two months with pain and boredom, I have to turn things around. I've known about this thread for over a year and have been intentionally ignoring it just because of the depression that would set in if I read it and didn't quit. I just wasn't ready.

Tonight around midnight I went outside with a nearly full pack of Marlboros and took a walk. I lit up one smoke and asked myself if I was ready to face the music. After that smoke was gone I lit another with it and kept walking. After that one I lit another, and another. Five smokes and three laps around the neighborhood and I was back to my porch. With my fifth cigarette in twenty minutes in my hand I took a long drag. I could barely finish the drag without spitting. Exhaled. Spit. Inhaled nothing and spit again. There were at least six puffs left on the butt when I flicked it onto the pavement. I walked back into the house and felt a strange sort of completion. I stunk like a fucking ashtray and had to walk carefully so i didn't fall over.

After that I came back to my living room and decided to tackle that stupid thread that had been taunting me for so long. I read it all. All of your twisted comments. I'm stuck wondering if some of you fools have relapsed. I'm proud of BIV for all that he accomplished and it was really cool to see people checking back in after days, weeks, months and even after a year. I particularly enjoyed the exchange between kloraferm and others debating the "addiction." It was cool to see that some people were willing to admit that they failed to quit, but were determined to try again (some now, some later). I'm not sure if Stingray is still off the sticks, but I hope if he tried again, he's still hanging in there. I find it funny that no matter how many times someone quoted Jimmy Stewart I still read it in that voice, "were gonna get through this." Great thread people.

I have been smoke-free for two whole hours. I am going to attempt the replace method. Back to the gym and mountain bike. I am also going to try the patented Trident multi pack method (with miniature gum wrapper smokes). This is for all intents and purposes attempt number seven. Lucky (Strike) number seven. I have never quit with this much preparation, determination and hate before, so let's hope that the last five disguisting cigarettes that I smoked will be the last I ever have in my life.

I promise to be honest with this board and this board alone. If I cheat or relapse, I'll tell you. I tend to lie to others to aviod the discomfort of shame, but here I'm just an anonymous douche, so there's no shame.

Thanks to those who have shared their stories/journeys/opinions/shame/accomplishments

Hell all.

Another person trying to quit here but I'm having relationship problems and keep getting a pack.

I'm sorta a cheapie though and I'm not paying $3.96 (around that after tax) a pack for Camels even though I love 'em. So I guess the price is keeping me away.

But I keep getting a pack of these awful "Little Cigars" for $1.06. Hardly dents the wallet. These also so goddamn heavy, I can only smoke like 3-4 a day, if that.

Working progress for me. It's up to my girl getting her shit together, stop being moody and stop being unfaithful. Can't dump her either because I'm obsessed and she might be carrying my child.

Day one was going fine until about 7:00 p.m. when my wife said something that just sent me overboard. I was trying to give the rest of my smokes to her sister because she smokes the same kind and I didn't want the $$ to go to wast in the trash can. She asked her to leave one pack at our house (in case she wants one at the bar this weekend.) I think I said, "Thanks for fucking supporting me you fucking bitch. No wonder I can't fucking do this, you fucking sabotage me every fucking time. Thanks a fucking lot. You have got to be fucking kidding me. What the fuck?" And she left for the next three hours. The house was quiet but I was fuming. It really wasn't worth fighting over, but my brain was just reeling from the day one jitters. No headaches yet but I'm sure that'll come soon enough. Up to 34 hours without. Not too bad, just hope my marriage survives.

I quit a few years ago. I found that after I moved out of my old place (my roomate smoked A LOT), it was a lot easier. My GF got cancer awhile ago, and seeing her go through chemo, etc., cemented my wanting to quit. Fuck going through that shit!
I did the gum, and it worked for me. The problem is that you can get addicted to the gum after awhile. At some point, you have to go off of nicotine completely. If I drink, the urge to smoke comes back sometimes though. My uncle quit 30 years ago, but he still cannot even have a cigar. He knows that he will go buy a pack of cigs if he does. If I could go back in time, I would smack that first cigarette out of my stupid 25 year old mouth! :icon_mrgr

I smoked for about 4 years at the end of high school and in early college. I quit 3 years ago and it was a great decision, I have saved over $2000 I have tried to smoke a couple of times since then, but every time I did the cig tasted like complete shit, like burning tea leaves and i never got more than a couple of drags. I have only tried to smoke 3 times since I quit. All three times I was completely hammered. But yeah quitting is definitley alot better than smoking.

I quit for 1 Month, 1 Week, 5 Days, 8 hours, 20 minutes and 59 seconds (43 days). I have saved $113.78 by not smoking 650 cigarettes. I have saved 2 Days, 6 hours and 10 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 10/2/2006 12:30 AM

I had a drag after Headquarters last weekend, but I was pretty drunk so I'm not going to restart my count for that. Otherwise, I'm still having some dreams but most of the daily cravings have subsided.

I'm planning to stop on the first. I've smoked about a pack a day or so for about 14 years. Anyone use the commit lozenges?

longest I made it was about 2 and a half weeks. If I can make it that far again, i think I'll be good..

stop smoking

stop drinking

Stop drinking would be at least for me, cause it's such a social thing to do.

Thank you for bring this thread back, I forgot about it and I read what I wrote while I was quitting. I'm smoke free since 9/9/06. GET THE FUCKING PATCH if you don't think you'll make it. And during the tough times, just remember there's thousands of people that quit on Jan. 1 so you're not the only one feeling that way. And don't forget what Anthony said... "Just put down the fucking smokes. Yeah, ya look cool, so fucking what."

Today is my two year anniversary. It was tough at first, but you can quit (I did so cold turkey, no patch/gum, and was a fairly heavy smoker). I almost had a relapse on Friday though, because I was BEYOND hammered and saw my friends smoking, and ran over to grab a smoke...fortunately my gf was with me and intervened....could have been bad. Moral of the story: You can quit, it's tough at first but totally worth it...BUT if you get drunk, be careful.

Zyban and Welbutrin are the same drug with different names (so I am told). Welbutrin is a antidepressant that showed decrease in smoking as an unexpected side effect of use. The drug company then marketed it as a 'quit smoking' drug, which would not be covered by any insurance because smoking is not considered an illness. Depression is considered an medical condition so the welbutrin is covered. I haven't tried either one but I might if the urge to smoke isn't gone by the 2 month point.

yeah, Welbutrin is covered by health insurance (can't remember if it was Aetna or BCBS when I took it) but it didn't make me want to smoke less. all it did was make me not give a fuck about anything.

I'm on day 3 of the patch, and I've smoked about 6 total in those days (1/4 of one here, 1/2 of one there) and I'm not really sure why I did smoke them, because I really didn't even want them.

Well, since I started the thread, it's time for an update. March 5th was the two year mark for me. No cigs, no break downs. Lungs till havn;t fully recovered, phlem can still be a problem, but that may be the alcohol. I still have those annoying smoking dreams.

The other day I was crossing at a cross walk and saw a half smoked cig sitting on the ground. Suddenly I had an urge to pick it up and smoke it. Went quick, but the deamon never really goes away I guess.

Quitting was the hardest...and best thing I have ever done.

Happy two year anniversary!!!

I quit 10 years ago and for a long time I had dreams I was smoking and had to quit over again. I think it was my way of keeping myself straight.

Don't wait to quit. every cigarette you smoke might be the one that fucks with your cells and gives you cancer. I am watching someone I care for battle lung cancer and it is HORRIBLE!!!!! Just don't pick up the pack. Look at it, but don't touch it.

I decided the day I quit that I wasn't a smoker. I thought of myself as someone who didn't smoke, sounds stupid but it helped psychologically.

Good luck everybody.

I can't read this whole thread, but if this has been mentioned I don't apologize for the redundancy. Alan Carr's book "The Easy way to Quit Smoking" fucking worked for me. It was a miracle in my life. I haven't had even a craving for a cigarette since I put the book down two years ago. I was a hard core, unrepentant smoker before I picked up the book - these days I can spend three nights in Vegas gambling and binge drinking without even thinking about lighting up.

The book is a simple brainwashing exercise, but it worked for me. I'm a very skeptical person and didn't think it would work, but every day I don't have to smoke I thank god I picked it up.

So put that in your pipe and... well, actually don't do that.

Yeah that book was great, what it did for me was make me feel like a fucking loser for smoking in the first place, though I'm gonna give myself the credit for actually quitting. The book works great as an extra tool in the process of quitting.

Also, I'd suggest doing some research into the chemicals they put in cigarettes, I knew there was some bad shit, but I had no idea how much until i researched it.

Yes, it is exactly these times that quitting is all about. Anybody can gut it out in a quiet room by themselves. After the initial 2-3 weeks, it's all about saying fuck you to nicotine and not letting it beat you. It's you against the drug.

Good job to those who have quit smoking and keep at it for those who are trying. I've been completely smoke free for about two years. My method of quitting was cold turkey. It was the hardest thing I've ever done and I was a real nightmare to everyone around me for a couple weeks, but I'm better off now. I would suggest to anyone to really try to quit this way before resorting to alternate methods.
I still get a craving once in a great while, but I have my father-in-law to thank for me not lighting up. I just look at him sitting on the couch cleaning out his trache tube and drinking beer through his feeding tube and that's all I need. Plus his cancer has come back for the fourth time and from what I'm told this is the one that will finish him off. He probably won't get to see his youngest daughter graduate high school, but hey smoking sure was fun. I'd be happy to tell the whole story to avoid an endless rambling here if anyone else wants a reason to quit smoking.
Once again great job to all those who are giving up smoking for good. I'd be happy to offer support for anyone that needs it.

Since this thread was kind of revived a couple of weeks ago, I got on board.

I've been doing this shit for 20 years and I'm just sick and fucking tired of waking up coughing up a lung. I'm a pussy, though. I'd kill people if I went cold turkey.

I just started with no smoking in the truck, house, or car. Eating black licorice seems to help, and I toss the Commit lozenges throughout the day. After 5 days, I'm down to 2 cigs a day. Couple of puffs here and there.

The biggest problem I have, is that I also had to cut out the booze and the coffee for a while. That's sending me into a tailspin on its own.

Hell; Counting the booze, cigs, and Starbucks, I'm ahead about $15/day. Do that math on that one.

Everyone's posts in this thread are inspirational. Thanks.

You know what a great way to quit smoking is. Be in a coma for 16 days, it will take care of all the withdrawl syptoms. Although one drawback is you might come out of the coma with losing the ability to walk for a while. Along with the intense throbbing pain associated with nerve damage. So I have been smoke free for 5 months. But probably still a couple of months from walking normal again. Great trade off huh?

It's really not that bad. I only quit drinking for like a week and a half. Then I had a couple brews to see if I would get the cravings and got nuthin. So I proceeded to get shit faced. It's been almost a year since I quit and I still fear drinking Red Bull. Red Bull and smokes were my FAVORITE!

I thank those who helped me, I'm here to help anyone I can.

I look at it like this:
I've tried to quit before, and failed.
I'm tryin to not fail.

I will not buy/smoke cigarettes again.

for those that need some help with the craving: I use Ariva. it's like a losssenge. $2.99 @ CVS.( I use them sometimes when I'm drinkin or havin a hard time-bought a box of 20 over a month ago...still have 4 left.)
I have used:
the patch and Welabrution(sp) Both worked.(Pills better) but had them crazy, wild ass dreams.

Keep it up, Yall. I'm tryin too.

My wife just started Chantrix, and if it works for her, I will start using it soon.

I have tried to quit so many times before. I just started again in January after being 9 months smoke free, and now I am back to almost a pack and a half a day again

My g/f is on chantrix and it doesn't seem to work,,,then again she's not exactly trying too hard to quit

I called 1-800-NY-QUITS and they sent me two-weeks' worth of the 21mg patch (the equivalent of about a pack per day) for free. It's working ok -- there still are cravings, but they're manageable. I got a bunch of cough drops (non-nicotine) to supplant the cravings, and the combination is working well. I've been smoke-free for going on five days now.

What is the active ingredient in Chantix? Is it like wellbutrin or something? maybe I'll try it when bennies kick in again..

I jumped up to about .75 of a pack a day & some more when I drink where I can smoke... will probably always have a cig or two when I drink beer, but I've gotta cut down again.

Yeah it took me about 2 - 3 weeks to really get over everyday cravings. Now I just get them when I go out drinking.

Be sure to drink a lot of water, that helped with the cravings.

It also helped that I went back to teaching HS and that I'm not allowed to smoke on school grounds which is usually all day.

Keep it up. You'll feel a whole lot better.

Remember two things:

Your battle is with one cigarette. If you look at the entire scope of trying to quit it can be daunting. Concentrate on just saying no to the one cig.

And set goals. My first goal was a week. Then the elusive two week spot where detox gets easier (detox was almost three weeks for me). Then a month, then 2, then four, then six. At that point you should be golden.

I googled the symptons of a heart attack, and I had 2 of them, and Iknew that 2 hours earlier I was perfectly fine. called 911 thinking Heart attack, my rate was a little high mostly because I was having a panic/ anxiety attack. I honestly thought I might die.
symptoms usually last for 24 hours, right now my arm feels fime, but I still have that blah feeling.

How long before I'm not CONSTANTLY thinking about lighting up?

Frankly, it doesn't take drugs or the patch or gum or anything else but a commitment on your part to stop and not start again. Nobody in the world loved nicotine more than me and until I actually, really made the decision to quit, no drug, patch or gum did a bit of good. When I finally did commit, and I mean the inside your own head kind of commitment, not the kind you use to try to convince yourself and others that your committed, no drug, gum, or patch was required.

After 3 months, it's really a struggle against complacency. Hell I still struggle with it. The minute you think you've got it beat, you're sunk. I keep reminding myself that one drag, and I'm back to a pack a day within a week. That's the truth, and that's the struggle, to keep myself cognizant of my level of addiction and not let myself do something stupid. Not that I'm above doing anything stupid mind you, but so far, I haven't.

BCH is right. It doesn't take drugs or anything. You've got to be in the right mindset and I may or may nor be successful this time, but I know that the times I have gone longer are the times when I was in the right place mentally.

I am on day 5 now and have not had any nicotine in a lil over 48 hours. No gum, no patches..... nothin.... I am about to lose my mind, but I keep reminding myself that if I have one now, all the pain and anguish I have been experiencing the last 48 hours will be for nothing.

Based on the withdrawal symptoms I am getting..... I am probably more addicted now than I ever have been. I don't remember them ever being this bad before. My entire body is itchy/tingly. My back is killing me and I can even complete a sentence without getting distracted.

Good for you guys who have succeeded and currently trying to quit. My biggest obstacle in quitting is the hour in traffic everyday. As soon as I hit certain landmarks in my commute I instinctively light up. I don't smoke at work all day, just to and from, and have maybe 2 at most once I get home. My big problem is the weekends and particularly when the booze begins to flow.

However I am getting a new car in 2-3 weeks, and I am refusing to smoke in it because I want to keep it from getting all stanked up like my current car is. So if I start on Sunday, I will go through Friday hopefully to get me over the physical hump.

That is exactly what I have been doing. So far, so good! I THINK the symptoms are beginning to subside a little bit. That would make sense since is it just over 4 days since I have had any nicotine.

The one symptom that is killing me is the lower abdominal pains. Let's just say I have been eating tons of fiber to try to get things to "move"

I quit around this time last year cold turkey and it was the best for me but I had an extremely stressful wedding (I'm a florist.) and I caved. It was either smoking or bashing the brides head in with my foot.

Alas here in the lovely state of NY the cigarette prices went up ($7.40) and it's starting to get silly.

Soo I'm gonna quit next Monday.

Absolutely. Oh, it'll still hit ya from time to time, but the pressing need to smoke goes away.

The biggest thing is getting the nicotine out of your system initially. This takes different times for different people, but it's usually around six weeks with the worst of it at about 2-3 weeks.

I've said it before. People try to do this shit backwards. Keep the habit, kick the nicotine. The habit is not the problem. Stuff like the gum and the patch are next to useless. Just man up and accept the fact that the withdrawls are going to suck like nothing else. Nicotine is as addictive as heroin. If you are not feeling any pain you are not kicking it.
