UPDATE: Cash4Gold has filed a defamation suit (right-click here and save to your harddrive to view the PDF) against the ex-employee who posted the below allegations against the company on ComplaintsBoard. The company asserts that the employee's statements were entirely false, and claims that she said she was going to "make Cash4Gold be sorry for firing her." They have also asked us to remove this story. We'll be looking into this and will keep you posted on further developments. (4/3/09)

Seems like a legit company to me... just put your gold jewelry in an envelope and send it to them, and they will send you some money. Seems foolproof....

Oh I don't know, that seems shady. They advertise on satellite radio, for goodness sake. It's not like one of those network tv scams.

Last I heard, they were worried about thieves fencing their stolen goods there.

So the complaints are:
1) You don't have to get your items appraised first
2) We give ourselves a time buffer for processing items
3) Your jewelry is appraised for smelting purposes, not for resale
4) The checks sometimes go out 2 or 3 days late
5) You have to contact us quickly if you're not satisfied
6) Checks take two weeks, and the amounts are usually less than expected
7) Sometimes packages are lost
8) If you are not happy with your amount, you should call back to get more money
9) If you accept our offer, the deal is completed
10) If you want your items back, you have to pay the shipping
Sounds like they're far more ethical than they should be. Anyone stupid enough to use a service like this deserves to get fucked over.

Just use a pawn shop. At least they'll tell you how worthless your goods are to your face.

One of the issues is valid. If you want to dispute the amount paid, you have to do it within 10 days from the date the check was cut. If they're cutting checks on the 1st and not mailing them for 3 or 4 days, it's quite possible that you won't get the check in time to dispute it.
I also think it's kinda shitty that they low ball the initial offer. I'm guessing that if you're sending your stuff to Cash4Gold that you're not savvy enough to search this out on the internet and know that you just call & dispute the amount until they triple the original amount.
By the way, anyone ever shop at a pawn shop? I never have because they're usually in shitty neighborhoods. Just curious what you've found/what your experience was.

A dude I used to work with would hit pawn shops and end up buying some nice power tools and stuff. He got some pretty good deals. You gotta wonder though how much of it is stolen.

the ATF closed my favorite pawn shop, they used to be great for buying guns. the only thing you have to worry about is whether or not there's body's on it :)

My uncle owns a pawnshop and Hummer's right in that they are usually in the shittier parts of town. His is no exception. It is a goldmine however and it's made him a millionaire several times over since he opened it in the late 70s. He mainly deals in jewelry and guns. He also has power tools and construction equipment like Sinn says but he also told me that he could go broke buying them right now since construction activity has plummeted. He's swimming in tools. If you've never been in one you should go and look around. You can find some pretty cool stuff.
The funny thing is that he worked in the accounts receivable department of Sears when he was young and dreaming of starting a business. When I asked him what made him go into the pawn business he said that he never wanted to badger people for money again. Since he now gets the collateral upfront he doesn't really give a shit if they ever walk in the door again.
As far as any stolen merchandise goes he gets numerous letters from Walmart and the like threatening to sue if it's ever proven that shoplifted merchandise was pawned. He just tosses them in the trash. If a private citizen spots their stolen merchandise in his store they have to 1: prove it's theirs and that it was stolen. 2: pay him the price it was pawned for. Outrageous I know, but that's the way he explained it to me. Shady.

One of my customers is a pawn shop. I swear I'd work there for free because its so entertaining to sit behind the glass and watch all the crackheads coming in to try to sell anything they can find.... they come in, get denied, come back 20 minutes later with something else.
Watching a crackhead get offered $80 on a ring she insits was $8000 and accepting it...its gold

Pawn shops are everywhere out in Wyoming, Montana, and the surrounding states.
They run commercials on tv and have a pretty good business. The number of tools is crazy..but out there all the construction guys have to do is show proof that they own the merchandise and they get it back.
When I moved back east I got rid of some of my stuff at a Pawn shop. Paid to have the important stuff shipped back. I sold about 100 cds and Just as many DVDs for 2 bucks and 5 bucks each respectively. I copied all the cd's to my computer, and have on Demand..so they were just gathering dust.
I did pick up a nice Mountain bike out there from a pawn shop for about 250..I checked and it listed at 1400..so it was a very good deal.
I used to go to the Pawn shop in Asbury Park just to people watch..it was great listening to certain people bartering over the money they got for their Jewelry.

Anyone who puts their jury in an envelope and mails it expecting cash deserves what they get. They should get a bunch of sand back. What a bunch of dummies.

I think it took me about 10 seconds into the first Cash4Gold commercial to realize that this was a scam. The first question that came out of my mouth was "how do you know they are telling the truth about the value?"
If your dumb enough to send anything to these people you deserve the anal violation.

It reminds me of the patent help commercials. Send us your brilliant inventions, and if they make any money, we'll send you some.

I love the one where the guy complains about the testing process.
Who gives a shit how they appraise your stuff and if the employees get sick from chemicals?
I wouldn't touch anyone that advertises on XM with a ten foot pole.

They play a lot of the same ones on the other channels I listen to. Or at least on the NFL channel and on America Right (they don't have the dick pill commercials, but load up on the gold and the "crisis garden seeds" ads).

When I lived near a military base, there were TONS of pawn shops. But I didn't worry much about whether stuff was stolen or not. A lot of stuff was from troops who were deploying and wanted some quick strip club cash before they get sent to the desert for a year.
