Just bought (at this point in typing I had to jump up and kill one) a house 3 weeks ago and have killed 6 spiders and about 20 house centipedes. I have a very irrational fear of them. I think the spiders are black house spiders. I read online that the centipedes need moisture to survive so I went to Lowes today and bought the biggest dehumidifier they had and bought 2 different bug sprays. One for the perimiter of the house, and one to spray all over the inside and basement. I sprayed everything this morning before work and when I got home at midnight I went hunting. I killed 5 spiders and 8 centipedes in about 30mins, not that I expected to solve the problem in one day. I'm not gonna be able to sleep.
Anyone ever have to deal with this? Any tips to help get rid of them. Only other things I can think to do is put screens over the crawlspace vents and over the basement drain, and remove all cardboard boxes from the basement.
I like spiders. My wife's sisters call this house "The Spider Ranch" so I don't think I'll be of much help.

The spiders probably help keep down the centipede population.

What a freaking pussy.
Spiders and very helpful critters. Centipedes can get quite large (up six or more inches) if they live long enough.
Someplace in South American, I read about some centipedes that were about two feet or more, and they eat mice.
Food for thought...

to get rid of them go to the pool supply store, get a bag of HTH pour it into your bath tub and fill it with about 3" of water, then get 4 gallons of ammonia and pour it into the tub. make absolutely sure that you close all of your doors and windows tight. as a matter of fact cover them with plastic and make sure to lock your doors. your spider problem should be taken care of in about 15mins.
You better watch out or the insects will get you.
Call an exterminator. That's what they're for.

The worst is if u pile ur clothes up they will hide in there too.
Here, the spiders are the worst. This is what you do. Go get some borax. Grab a bowl add some borax and water and male a paste. Put it along windows, doors or wherever u think they are getting in. It wards them off. Boric acid will do the same. It works. I was bit by a brown recluse first night in my new apt. I had a bruise for a month with what looked like two little pin holes in my arm.

boric acid is quite useful. i had roaches in my old apartment and no matter how many traps i put down, they'd eventually come back. but once i put down some boric acid, i didn't see a roach for months. it works on various creepy crawlers like spiders and ants too.
don't think the stuff is good for your pets, so you might not want to use it if you've got a dog or a cat.

You need this stuff:
diatomaceous earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth)
Go to a pool supply store and get some. Put it in all the cracks crevices, etc. Sprinkle it around in your crawlspace.
On a microscopic level, this stuff is like clusters of razor blades and will shred the shit out of insects. It basically cuts them up so badly that all of the liquids from their innards leaks out so they die from dehydration. It is very, very effective.

I was bluing some rifles one day. A spider came down on a web and hovered beside me. I caught the web and lowered him into the degrease tank, 42" of MEK, methyl ethyl ketone. He hit bottom, looked around, and took a stroll to the other end, where he climbed out and shook off. Not a care in the world.

Borax is good and is relatively non-toxic. You can even put it near foodstuffs.

Same with the ones in Vegas. Come springtime every year I'd have to go out at night when they come out and yeah, they just laugh at the bath. Key to keeping Widows out is keep your shit clean.

We got a groundhog under the shed.. I think it's the same one that's been there since before we moved in 3 years ago. My dogs have killed two, but I think they were ones that had the misfortune of wandering into the yard and getting cornered. This guy doesn't stray far from the safety of his den under my shed. He comes out to eat some grass and my dogs see him through the window from inside the house, then proceed to go ape shit. Even if I let them out while he's out, they're never gonna get him. It's almost 100 feet from the back door to the shed. He's got plenty of time to get back underneath before they get there because he never gets more than 6 feet away from the shed.
I am gonna have to trap and relocate... I am sick of listening to the dogs bark when he comes out.

I actually wasn't even thinking about checking the trap. I went back to the shed to get something and found my trap occupied. The pics are of the trap sitting in the back of my truck. He is enjoying a new home somewhere he won't bother anyone and will be safe from harm. He really wasn't bothering me. But, the fact that my dogs would bark in the middle of the night when they saw him come out into the back yard was getting to be annoying. If not for that, he could have stayed there forever for all I care.

You do know that most brown recluse bites heal without incident right? Those horror stories you see/hear are from people who are particularly sensitive to brown recluse venom. I don't give a shit anyway, I live in NY where we have neither Brown Recluse nor Black Widow spiders.
The Brown and Black problem in NY is not with spiders, but people.

The trap has been redeployed as something was seen darting under the shed about an hour ago.

Caught second ground hog. Nothing ever showed up in the trap for 2 weeks after the last one. So I stopped baiting it and just left it out there. We never saw anything either.
Well, this week I was told another groundhog was spotted. So, Tuesday night I put some apples in the trap. Yesterday, the groundhog was spotted sitting in the trap chowing down. But, the trap didn't spring. It's a double-ended trap. Something was screwed up, so the door didn't close when the trap was sprung. So, I just turned it around, opened the other end instead, and re-baited with apples last night.
Got up this morning to find a groundhog in the trap. It's definitely not the same one. He looks a bit different, and I did relocate the other one like 20 miles away. I'll take a picture before I set this guy free later today.

Sinn, I noticed you live in Bucks County,
Jesus we are getting over run with the little basterds. They are everywhere this year. If you are going to live trap them, please tell me you are taking them to NJ to release them.

Friggin Border Collie and GSD want to herd them... a booo...
Correction... when my parents were here last week the GSD brought a groundhog in... quite dead and basically crushed in the middle... and presented it to my mother when she was still in bed... I have never heard such a blood curdling scream in my life:)

lol, we brought a bunch of ducks home from a field trial one time..... yea one of them decided to fly the coop... DOC snagged his ass... brings is prize up to my mom and drops it at her feet... problem was it wasn't totally dead... she wanted to take the fucking thing to the vet... i broke its neck right in front of her, then asked her if she wanted me to cook it up for her...mom wasn't all that happy.
oh and that being said... zipped a ground hog about 15 mins ago, caught the fucker in a "live trap" i felt kind of bad shooting him in the cage but the neighbors daughters were running around. he got the last laugh though, i popped him in the noggin but he started to spurt blood out of his nose it always amazes how far blood will fly. got it all over me and the bbl of my rifle and yea... wiped the blood right off dont want to fuck up the bluing

I've got more gophers too. I tried to flood them out yesterday but after a swimming pools worth of water disappeared under my yard I saw a bunch of wet dirt flying out of the hole. man those things piss me the hell off.:mad4:
My neighbors boxer was running around yesterday chasing one of the whistle pigs around. The little fella finally had enough and spun around on the boxer. The problem is the boxer had absolutely no idea what he wanted to do with the thing once he got it so at the slightest bit of aggression from his quarry he decided to give up the ghost and hightail it back inside.

I hate those house centipedes. Defend spiders if you like, but these centipedes aren't always afraid of people.
Imagine this falling in your hair when you reach for the bathroom light switch:
