this got me to thinking.....
http://www.wackbag.com/showthread.php?t=100813
whether it was a memorable sporting event or a particularly good live performance or a news event or something else that a layman might be interested to hear about.
I've seen many important sporting events for my old jobs, but it's only a few particularly memorable big concerts and events that I really remember every detail of.....
I've mentioned GnR at Giants Stadium

December 8, 1987 - I was at the Flyers game vs. Boston when Ron Hextall scored a goal by firing the puck all the way down the ice into the empty net (Boston had pulled their goalie). Earlier during that same game, legendary Flyers defenseman Brad Marsh (one of the last guys to play without a helmet) almost got killed when he got checked into an unpadded upright beam that was at the corner of the other team's bench. It was horrific - blood on the ice - alot of it. He had a severe concussion and was taken off in a stretcher.
I was at the last Phillies game at Veterans' Stadium.
Can't think of anything else right now...

I was in Germany from 89- 92. I got to see the fall of the Berlin wall concert.
Also I was in Desert Storm, I got to the Basarah highway right after American a10's got done. It was really something I will never forget. We spent two days cleaning body's in 110 degree heat off of the road so they could land c 130's.
The closest would be Mount St. Helens. I was in th Tri-Cities, in Southeast Washington and only 4-years-old, but I still remember the cloud of ash covering the sky and the ash falling like snow.

I seem to miss all the important events..
I had tickets to the game when Barry Bonds hit his 600th home run, but didnt go.
I also had tickets to the game when Barry Bonds hit his 714th home run but didnt go cause It was a day game and I was still drunk from the night before. The guy that caught the ball was in the seat that I would have been in right next to my buddies.
I was at the game when the A's won their 20th game in a row, so I guess I didnt miss everything.
I also saw the retirement of Nolan Ryan's number in Anahiem and Ronnie Lotts number in SF

Was at the real L.T.'s last game.
Third game at new Yankee Stadium...
The 14 runs and 13 hits in the second were the most allowed by the Yankees in any inning in their history. The 22 runs tied the Yankees' record for most allowed in a home game.
....so I got that.
Was at game 6 of the 1998 ALCS, Yanks beat Indians 9-5 go to WS and sweep Padres.

Drank beer next to an incoherent Ace Fraeley
So did I....Probably more historic if we didn't drink next to him.
Was at O&A road show at the Long Shore Brewing Company before they were "big".
I had an office overlooking this bridge (from off the the right, other side of the road.) In the late 80's I watched them slowly dismantle it in preparation to hook cables to the top of the arch and pull it over with tractors, into the river. It was pretty fucking cool when it hit the water. Sent up a HUGE wall of water.

in the world of NASCAR, I was at the Atlanta race where Kevin Harvick won after Dale Earnhardt, Sr.'s death.....
I've never seen so much emotion from one group, (and I use that term loosely...120,000) people in my life....it literally is one of those moments that could turn a person that busts on NASCAR into a permanent fan.
I wasn't there witnessing it live, but on TV, I turned it to CNN just as the 2nd plane hit....at the time, I had no clue that anything was going on. Sure, that doesn't count....but I seen it LIVE...not recorded.

Was at last year's Angels/Dodgers game when the Dodgers got no-hit but still beat the Angels 1-0. (It wasn't officially a no hitter since the Dodgers didn't bat in the bottom half of the ninth).
As a kid was at this game:
1977: In Tommy Lasorda's first full year at helm, the Dodgers make history when four members of the team hit 30 or more home runs: Steve Garvey (33), Reggie Smith (32), Ron Cey (30) and Dusty Baker (30).
Baker hit his home run on the last day of the season.
Although that was pretty cool (1st time 4 players w/30 HR on same team), it supposedly was the first high-five in baseball. Glenn Burke, who was on-deck when Baker hit his homer, greeted Baker at home plate with a high-five.
He is recognized as the player who invented the high five.[citation needed] In 1977 he ran out onto the field to congratulate his Los Angeles Dodgers teammate Dusty Baker for hitting a home run in the last game of the regular season.
His celebration has since been imitated by athletes and fans in virtually every sport around the world. The second recorded "high five" came moments later when Baker returned the favor in celebration of Burke's first major league home run.
Burke also later gained notoriety as the first openly-gay "ball player" and ended up dying of AIDS in 1995.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Burke
Bonus Fun Fact:
Dusty Baker was in the on-deck circle when Hank Aaron hit 714.

After falling behind 35-3 in the third quarter, Buffalo rallied to tie the game thanks to a heroic performance by backup quarterback Frank Reich. Houston won the toss but Warren Moon's interception returned possession to the Bills. Steve Christie's 32-yard field goal would give Buffalo the unlikely 41-38 victory and complete the largest comeback in NFL history.

The only historic/really important thing I've ever viewed (not live but still) is the World Trade Centers come down. I saw plane 2 hit, I'm definitely never going to forget that and I know I'll tell my kids about it some day.
I was at the end of the parade route after the patriots won the superbowl for the first time.

My NYC blackout of '03 experience was a bust. I had left the city that day to visit my family in south jersey. while eating at a mcdonald's in wall twp., the lights went out for a minute around 3 p.m., then everything was back to normal. later i made it to my hometown and all was pretty normal there, even though the towns not far from us were still dark.
personally, i would have LOVED to be in the city that night, if only to participate in the candlelit bar scene that night that I've read about.

Fuck, I wish that was my story.

I met Billy Martin the day before he died. I was like 5 or 6 and we saw him at Mickey Mantle's and my dad told me to go over to him and I (apparently, cause i dont remember) tugged on his jacket and said, "Mr. Martin, can I have your autograph?" I got his autograph and shit, and my mom put it in her purse and then proceeded to throw it out accidentally.
Surprised he didn't pour a beer over your head, palm mush your face and say, "Get outta here, kid!"
....Love and miss Billy Martin.

I wish I had a record...
I guess maybe not for a virus, but still that's pretty cool.

I talked politics with David Duke once at a restaurant.
I was sitting in the booth next to him and on his way out someone waved to him and he came over and started chatting.
and yea, it's nothing historic so add me to the list along with 90% of non-historic events in this thread.

I was at Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals in 1994, when Messier predicted that the Rangers would beat the Devils that night and win the series. He subsequently scored a hat trick, providing me with my greatest professional sporting memory to date.
- I was at Game 7 of that series (double OT), though the famous "Matteau, Matteau, Matteau" call was Howie Rose on radio, and not in the Garden. The intial call was that Tikkanen scored the goal, though it was quickly corrected. Tikkanen skated back towards the Rangers bench as the crowd went wild. My seats were along side the bench. Tikkanen taps his stick on the glass in front of me top get my attention and hands me the stick.
- I was also at the infamous Bruins vs Rangers game at MSG when the Bruins climbed over the glass and started fighting with the fans.
- Watched the filming of "Waterworld" while in Hawaii
oops battery going dead. I've got more.....

oh yeah.....first Monday Night Football game in Texans history :D
never heard Reliant Stadium that loud before.....good times
Nothing historic at all to add either.
I've seen a lot of nasty bad wrecks ... that's about it. One sticks out the hardest because I remember driving by this car on the side of the interstate and saw its reverse lights come up and I drove by thinking what the fuck is that moron doing ... and heard the loudest grinding noise behind me. Apparently the genius kid behind the wheel dropped his hat out the car and was trying to go in reverse and get it and ended up on the interstate and got popped by a truck. 4 teens instantly dead.
Found an article on it:
