After Warren Patrick White pleaded guilty this morning in St. John’s to killing Amanda Power and cutting up her body last year, the brother of the deceased woman tried to jump over a courtroom seat to get at White.
The man, visibly upset, had to be restrained by sheriff’s officers as White was being led out of Newfoundland Supreme Court.
He then broke down in tears and was consoled by other family members, who also wept during proceedings.
White, 36, pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and performing an indignity to a dead human body.
Crown prosecutor Phil LeFeuvre read out in court the agreed statements of facts, which included the grisly details of the murder.
On May 30, 2008, White and Power had argued argument at their Warbury Street apartment in St. John’s over money and other household issues.
At one point, White accused Power of being unfaithful and said he had heard she was working as a prostitute and had lost their baby.
He admitted to police that after Power threw a lamp at him, he put both hands around her neck and choked her to death.
He said his memory of the choking incident was vague.
Power’s body was still inside the apartment two days after she was murdered.
Two or three days later, he dragged Power’s body to the bathtub, where he used a hacksaw and knife to cut off her head and all four limbs. He cut her torso into two pieces.
“The dismemberment of Ms. Power’s body took hours to complete,” the statement reads.
According to White, he placed her limbs into two back packs and threw them in the Waterford River. The back packs and contents were never recovered.
Power’s head was placed in grocery bags and stored in the freezer.
Power’s lower torso was placed in a suitcase and her upper torso was placed in a hockey bag.
On June 6, 2008, neighbourhood children playing in the area found Power’s torso stuffed in a suitcase in the backyard of the house that contained the apartment Power and White shared.
Justice James Adams has set June 23-26 for a sentencing hearing.
