U.S.: 'We got him'
Saddam captured near Tikrit
TIKRIT, Iraq (CNN) -- U.S. forces have captured Saddam Hussein in a late night raid near his hometown of Tikrit, according to the head of the Coalition Provisional Authority.
"Ladies and gentleman, we got him," L. Paul Bremer announced Sunday. The announcement was greeted with cheers from the audience.
Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez showed video of Saddam, who had graying hair and a long beard, undergoing a medical examination after his capture.
Several Iraqi journalists stood up and shouted "Death to Saddam" after the video was shown.
Sanchez said the former leader was not injured and has been "talkative and cooperative," after 4th Infantry Division and special operations forces nabbed him at a "rural farmhouse."
"Today is a great day for the Iraqi people and the coalition," Sanchez said.
Not a single shot was fired in "Operation Red Dawn," carried out based on intelligence gathered over several months, Sanchez said.
"This is very good news for the people of Iraq," British Prime Minister Tony Blair said in a statement Sunday. "It removes the shadow that has been hanging over them for too long of the nightmare of a return to the Saddam regime. This fear is now removed." (Blair reaction (http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/europe/12/14/sprj.irq.saddam.blair/index.html))
A senior U.S. official told CNN's Dana Bash in Washington that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told President Bush Saturday afternoon (EST) of the likely capture.
In Baghdad, hundreds of Iraqis flooded the streets, firing guns into the air, singing, dancing and throwing candy into the air -- celebrating the apparent capture of the man who had ruled their lives with terror and repression for more than three decades.
The raid was based on intelligence that Saddam was at a particular location in the area, the officials said.
Video following that raid -- exclusively shot by CNN's Alphonso Van Marsh -- showed a group of U.S.-led coalition soldiers patting each other on the back -- apparently in celebration -- and taking group photos in front of a military vehicle.
The 66-year-old longtime Iraqi leader was number one on the coalition's 55 most wanted list, and his evasion has been a political sore spot for the U.S. administration. (Saddam profile (http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/12/14/sprj.irq.saddam.profile.ap/index.html))
The Iraq war began on March 19 when U.S. forces launched a "decapitation attack" aimed at the Iraqi president and other top members of the country's leadership.
Hours later, a defiant Saddam wearing a military uniform appeared on Iraqi television to denounce the U.S.-led military campaign as "criminal" and to say his countrymen would be victorious.
At least a dozen audiotapes believed to have been recorded by Saddam, 66, have been released since he was forced out of power by the coalition forces during the Iraq war. The most recent was broadcast in November.
His sons Uday and Qusay -- also on the coalition's most wanted list -- were killed in July, after U.S. forces stormed their hideout in Mosul.
Sixteen policemen were among those killed in Sunday's explosion at Khaldiyah, 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Iraqi capital, the officer added.

Here is the "rest of the story"...
Sanchez said the former leader was not injured and has been "talkative and cooperative," after 4th Infantry Division and special operations forces nabbed him at a "rural farmhouse."
He was found in a farmhouse with Paris Hilton and will be seen on Fox's next episode of "The Simple Life"...

They shoulda just shot him in the face. Now he's gonna have to go through the liberal court system. To paraphrase Ant from the rant about the lawyer representing that Moussaoui guy (late Jan/early Feb 2002):
He'll get a Jew Lawyer to represent him. The Iraqi's and Arabs are trying to KILL Jews, but a slimy scumbag Jew lawyer will represent him.
Hopefully he'll go through Iraqi court and get beheaded or something. Tasty!

The best we can hope for is that he goes before
an Iraqi trail board and they hang the bastard.
It would be stupid for the U.S. to try and take him
out of Iraq for a trial. That would only endanger all
the remaining troops by pissing off those who want
to see him dead. There's enough people there that
will do our dirty work with no remorse!

This is bad for ol sadman and his muslem nuts. Sadman was this great leader that fought back the nasty US during Gulf War episode 1.
He was supposed to go out fighting, ripping the heads of of American soldiers and shitting down thier throats. He was supposed to lead his million man army against us Westerners.
What happens? He is found hidding in a hole in the ground looking worse then any homeless person I see walking the streets of NY. He is being a nice boy and going "AHH" for the American docters looking like a beat rat.
This is one of those leaders that that has told countless others to die for the greater glory of alah, and he is caught hidding. I am sure that his people are whatching him on TV and spitting at the screen.
Iraq, behold your glorious leader.

Agreed troops will continue to face some cowards but we will be suprised of how this will affect the attacks. This guy was found in a dirt hole which suprises me, he had billions in cash (I thought), yet he is found in a hole which a rat would dig, armed with a pistol. That right there says that he most likely was having limited connection to the curent attacks on the troops.
My question to this is, How Will This Affect The Current Attacks? I agree right now that some "cowards" may fight back-however the baath regieme, the fedeyeen, must of thought that Saadam would return....Now they know he won't ...
ALSO---was Saadam the true only leader? Is there someone out there that will take the role of the "new Sadaam?"---I doubt it since the Iraqi civilians haven't said there is.
Hey Bin Lauden must be shitting his pants right now...also I have heard that Sadaam may be linked to Russia and France, he must be telling the American's of this (hopefully) and those country's finially will be seen by the world as Enemies.

They'll keep him alive as long as they need to so they can get every last bit of information out of him. I'm sure they have loads of questions for him.
I wonder if he knows he's a dead man, or if he thinks talking will save his life.

:jail2:
We will keep him alive, period. Remember, these folks belive that dying fighting an enemy or at the hands of the enemy will send them straight to heaven. To be taken by the ememy alive is a sin beyond sins. Not only was he taken by his enemies, but he was seen being given aide by his enemies.
I belive he could go to trial here in the US, be found innocent of all charges, sent home where he would be "Stoned" (and not the good stoned) by the very folks he lead.
Even if there is no trial and we turn him over to the iraqies that may be a death sentance for him. He was there untouchable leader, until some US troops dragged him from a hole in the ground. Not the best place to find a leader of a nation.
But the best thing is he did not die a myrters death. instead he was caught like a common thief.
I belive the Iraqi folks are looking at all this and just saying "fuck" to themselves.
The war may not be over, but this is a Moral victory for the USA, and a blow to iraq and osamas band of useless sand flees.

There is no need to try him in an AMERICAN court... Unless it's a military TRIBUNAL.. I think the best thing to do is let the new Iraqi gov't deal with him once we get any info we can out of him.
This will show the IRAQi's we are not taking over thier country, that they have the right and the freewill, to deal with criminals as they see fit...
I'm sure once we are done with him they will treat him so very nice he will wish he was in an AMERICAN jail with BUBBA as his cell mate..

Absolutely right. The real question should be whether or not he even makes it to his hearings. I wouldn't be surprised if the Iraqis take matters into their own hands and in a "Jack Ruby/Lee Harvey Oswald" style, someone shoots him when he is moved. As long as our troops aren't in the way, I'm all for that.
I mean, every minute this douche remains in our custody alive, the more his extremists and terrorists have hope to free him. They may try to bomb or kidnap people and demand that he be released. If he's dead, there's no hope for them. We should just squeeze any info we can outta him, then kill him....fast. I heard that he's not cooperating in the interrogations, which is not good since he knows a ton of stuff that I'm sure we'd love to know. He may know where (if) there are WMD's, where some of his loyalists are, where Bin Laden's been, and his dealings with the french, russians, syrians, or any other country he may have had dealings with. Don't we have like a top-secret "truth syrum" where we can just drug the shit out of him? Who knows.
But this guy HAS to die, and the quicker the better just to ensure that any of his followers don't try to free him. Regardless of their efforts, he will not be let go, but his death can prevent alot of problems in the future.

No. The longer he lives the less GodLike he is to his folks in the sand flee capitol. Belive me I want him dead, just like every other american. But to kill him or to have him die in our custedy is not gonna help. He needs to live. The longer he lives in our custedy the less likely he will be welcomed wit open arms (like any one is opeing thier arms for him now, or even the past few months).
When those sand nihhas over there see him sitting nice and shaved and wearing pressed out clothes for his trial while his "subjects" are starving with a hole in the roof from the latest bombings, they will be salivating for his return. Not to greet the almighty leader, but to grab him, take him out into the desert and let him dance with the scorpians.
And I'll tell you this, I was more scared of them scorpians then the Republican Guard (what a joke the Guard was.).
I think that he will live long enough for those teeth that doc was looking at to fall out.
Let's see what happens next.

saddam will never be tried directly by the US as he has commited no crimes of international US law. i doubt he will be tried in iraq either, as it is kind of hard to have a justice system without a formed government
second, the longer he is alive, the more of a liabiliy he is.
if, for some reason, he dies in our or allies custody, he automatically becomes a martyr in the eyes of the extremists, who have such a strong whitewash belief in him.
Another scenario, once he is convicted in international courts, where do we imprison him?
we cant keep him in one place for too long either, as their are plenty of nutcases floating around that would love to pop a few UN guards in an attempt to 'free' him.
, we should have shot him in the darkness of his hole when we found him, just say he slipped.
now we have more of a liability than a victory

the moment i saw the news about him, i thought the same thing. should have shot him and say he was reaching for something. but you can't blame the troops that found him. i mean look at sadam. they probably didn't know who they found till later, by which time it would have been to late to shot him.
