Why are there SO many terrible horror movies? I am skimming through "Boo" from 2005 (I believe), since I am only looking for certain sound fx. In this, some dude in one part of a building fires his gun. The intrepid pack of teenagers hear "something." When he fires it a bit later, one girl says, "There it is again." The other says, "It's probably just the wind."

If you analyse the movies, like The Exorcist, that are genuinely scary, they generally have one thing in common: they take their subject-matter deadly seriously. 'Seven' is another superb horror that's genuinely scary, and it's deadly serious, too.

I still throw back to the movie that scared me stupid when I was a little kid. Jaws fucked me up so bad when my sister took me to see it at the age of 6. I wouldn't swim in the ocean on vacation for 3 years and was even afraid to get into my parents swimming pool when my asshole brother told me sharks could squeeze through pipes that start in the ocean and swim into swimming pools.....this was my parents swimming pool in the backyard of their home in Omaha Nebraska.

Jaws to this day still makes my heart skip a beat when I'm swimming in the ocean and something brushes my leg.

It is hard to find good horror movies. I hate when characters do something so inanely stupid that it takes me out of the film. In Diary of the Dead, it's been zombies, zombies, zombies. The group of people ends up at a mansion but gosh darn it, the one person who was IN the mansion just doesn't seem all together. One kid takes that opportunity to split from the group AND... takes a bath.

I did like one part of the new Friday the 13th.
One kid gets whacked while trying to get back into the house, but has enough in him to cry for help. One idiot decides to go and save him, but is held back by someone else who says, "No, he's already dead."

It's a deformed grizzly fetus. Long story short. Logging company way up north near the Canadian border has polluted the local waters. Bear eats fish, fish is contaminated and bear gives birth to something that is an eating machine. Then towards the end it dawns on everyone that lots of bears have been eating the fish. Original monster is dead and when people fly over the woods in a small plane another monster pokes it's head out of the water.

It was actually a really well made movie. Robert Fox and Talia Shire were in it along with the guy that played the gangster in Hoffa.
