I know it's early, training camp opens on Saturday but....let's start this thread with some great news,

Heath Miller signed a 5 year extension today! One of the best all around tight ends in the league today.

I gotta pick my spot to get out to camp this year. I know it's going to be packed again.

The Steelers still haven't ruled out signing Michael Vick publicly. But he's really not the kind of guy the Steelers will usually deal with and I'm not sure what he would do on the team.

I love the way Santonio Holmes didn't rest on his laurels at all this offseason. He worked out like a monster anticipating tougher coverage this year and he should really be a terror in tandem with Ward this year.

Word is the coaching staff is much happier with Limas Sweed and his work ethic going into this year. He needs to get his confidence and stop dropping the ball.

The thing that might excite me the most this year, oddly, is the punter. With the exception of a dedicated kick and punt returner (although that remains yet to be seen...but we drafted a couple guys that are capable of returning and you gotta think at least one of them will work out) the only real upgrade from last year will be Daniel Sepulveda returning as the punter. But it's a hell of an upgrade from a disaster of a position last year.

I'm interested to see if the Steelers will set yet another trend this year. Last year the offensive line was....well...offensive. But they were good enough to get the job done and going into the offseason several were free agents that the Steelers could let go and sign upgrades. Instead they chose to resign most of their free agent offensive linemen. It seemed odd but most offensive lines in the NFL see at least 2 or 3 changes every year. These linemen never get a chance to gel and have to be able to perform as "plug and play" pieces in an offense. If these returning lineman can gel and become a cohesive unit that performs significantly better you may see the trend change in the NFL with teams putting the priority in keeping the same guys together rather then constantly trying to upgrade.

Daniel Sepulveda

Holy Christ Hoagie, I totally forgot about that machine!

There is an article/video on Sweed this week on Post-Gazette.com. He apparently has matured during the offseason workouts. He could turn into something, kinda like what Holmes became last year after waiting for him to turn the same corner.

Ok I finally have a few minutes so I can share my thoughts about the first preseason game.

Ben didn't look as bad as I thought he would considering he didn't throw during the offseason to rest his shoulder. He moved well and I'm confident he will be ready by the start of the regular season.

Mendenhall is still raw. He shows some great footwork on one play and slow decision making on the next. He does show promise that he can pick his game up with experience and he showed he wasn't afraid of contact after the shoulder injury last year. I think he's a promising option to split time with Parker as the season goes on.

I don't know what to make of Limas Sweed. He made 2 very difficult catches and then dropped and easy catch on third down. I don't question his character. He's hungry. I could see it in the way he played. I just wonder if he's going to one of those Burress type guys that can't hold his focus. I do feel more confident about him getting on the field this year though.

It was great to hear the ovation that Sepulveda got when the Steelers punted the first time. And he showed why he deserved it. High, deep kicks really made the punt coverage very effective in that game.

Mike Wallace is very promising. He's fast. And he catches punts. That already makes him the leading candidate to return punts. He may need more work at the receiver position but it's hard to say since the bulk of his play came later in the game when people who don't get many reps as a unit are playing and things aren't as crisp as the first teams. But I didn't see anything to suggest that he won't be a big contributor to the team.

Ziggy Hood did very well against the second team and held his own in the few plays he was in with the starters but he needs to improve his play to be a regular player this season.

The defense looked pretty good overall. Considering they didn't run anything outside of their base packages and they held the Cardinals top teams off the scoreboard aside from the bullshit pass interference call that was clearly blown. Gay looked comfortable and competent at McFaddens old corner spot. I was glad to see that.

The offensive line is still not good.

The Steelers are deep. Clearly deeper then the Cardinals which doesn't make logical sense since the Steelers are almost always drafting in the bottom half of rounds and the Cardinals are almost always drafting in the top half. But it indicates they still have an eye for talent and the development is still good.

Isaac Redman looked great. Granted it was against the bottom of the barrel that the Cardinals had to offer but he still looked really good. It's easy to write it off on playing against guys who will most likely be cut but keep in mind the people he was playing with are in the same position and he stood out. It reminded of another running back who looked great in preseason games in his first camp but people wrote it off to poor competition and didn't give him a chance until later seasons. Willie Parker.

I like Dennis Dixon. I don't know why. He didn't look good until he went against the soon to be cut squad for the Cardinals. I think he can be a good backup QB in the NFL. He makes good decisions he just has to make them faster. Bad decision making is something that's very hard to change. But the speed of the decision making can come along with experience. I think they really need to keep him and let him get some experience.

09-01-2009, 10:15 PM
The bad news is Darnell Stapleton has been placed on IR and is out for the season. The good news is the offensive line looked much better in the last 2 preseason games without him. Trai Essex will start at guard and he's done will in the preseason games. But we really can't afford any more offensive line injuries.

Hoagie

That'll be a tough call. It'll really depend on what Hampton is looking for and how Hood performs this year. Hampton is losing his durability and is getting hurt more often. He's still the best when he's playing healthy it's just the amount of time he's been healthy is decreasing. I have a feeling they'll offer him a discounted price if he wants to stay. But if he's looking for what he's worth to other teams then he's gone after this year.

White doesn't regret Towel stomp

Apparently, LenDale White doesn't think stomping on the Terrible Towel last season was so, well, terrible.

White, who was among several Titans who stomped on the Steelers' signature towel following last year's 31–14 rout of Pittsburgh at LP Field, said he do it again given the chance.

"If it happens to be there, I'm going to stomp all over that [pause], man," the running back told reporters after practice Sunday. "If there's a towel in the stands, I will stomp on it. I don't care who gets mad. ... If they throw a towel at me, I'm going to kick it and stomp all over it. If they don't want their towel stomped on, keep it out my face."

The incident sparked controversy last season after White and teammate Keith Bulluck celebrated clinching the AFC's top seed by stomping on the Terrible Towel. Defensive end Jevon Kearse also was caught on camera pretending to use one to blow his nose.

The Titans face the Steelers at Heinz Field in the NFL's season opener on Thursday, Sept. 10. And while White told reporters he expects the atmosphere to be a "loud one, a loud, mean, evil one," Kearse said it's time to move on.

"I’m not even paying attention to that anymore. It happened. It’s in the past," Kearse said, according to The Nashville City Paper. "That was last season. It happened last season, so what? If they want to use that as motivation, let them go ahead and use that as motivation. I mean, rah, rah, rah. We stomped on a towel, so what? That’s what we were supposed to do in our house."

I sincerely hope that not only do we stomp a mud hole in their ass Thursday night, but we injure several of their players....severely.

Not this year. This year he'll be Hines "15 yard penalty" Ward. Fucking bullshit new rules eliminate "crack back blocks above the shoulder from WRs" (or something real close to that). It should just be called the "Hines Ward Rule". How the fuck is a 6'0'' 180 pound WR supposed to block a 6'4'' 265 pound monster of a LB without blindsiding him in the fucking mouth? It's part of the game. At least it was.

That rule doesn't really matter. Ward doesn't head hunt. He aims for the chest.

They put the rule in specifically for Hines. Like when they made the horse collar rule because of Roy Williams. No other WR breaks people's jaws (or throws solid blocks on LBs at all for that matter). Maybe he says he aims for the chest, but he doesnt. That's not how they teach WRs to block bigger guys, you're supposed to put one in his earhole and knock him down.

Mind you, I'm not bad mouthing Hines, he's one of my favorite non-Giants in the league, but this rule is gonna affect his style of play, and it's bullshit on rye bread.

Hoagie
09-10-2009, 10:25 AM
They put the rule in as a reaction to one individual hit. Not because he aims for people's heads. But even the on the Rivers hit he was looking to bury his shoulder into the chest. It's just bad luck for Rivers that Ward's helmet hit his face mask before the shoulder hit his chest. It's an over reaction to a clean play that resulted in an unfortunate injury.

askewcore
09-10-2009, 04:10 PM
It's an over reaction to a clean play that resulted in an unfortunate injury.

Almost all the new rules are over reactions to things that occur within the normal boundries of football. Somehow, the NFL wants no one to get hurt by another player. Ever. The new no-wedge rule is the same shit, because that dude from Buffalo broke his neck busting a wedge, now no one is allowed to do it anymore. The QB can't be hit below the knees was all because of Carson Palmer. The horsecollar tackle was because Roy Williams broke Musa Smith's leg like a pretzel stick (although that rule I agree with because a horsecollar really is a dirty way to tackle). They're really pussying up this game we love.

Anyway, you guys think the Steelers will cover 6 points tonight? I'm thinking about putting something down on them.

madden curse strikes again. Troy out 3 to 6 weeks.

Hoagie
09-12-2009, 11:54 PM
I hate losing Troy. Especially during a game where he was really showing why he is the best defensive player in the NFL.

The offensive line is taking alot of heat from this game. And they weren't great...BUT...they gave good pass protection and they did open some holes. Now they didn't blow holes open in the running game. It took a second to open them. But they did open some and Willie Parker just missed them time and again. He just tried to bounce everything outside. Parker had a terrible game.

Ben started off slow. He was nervous and said as much after the game. He missed a wide open Wallace for what would have been a long touchdown on the first drive. Then he got into the 2 minute offense and found his rhythm and never looked back. Ward and Holmes are just dueling threats right now. Our receivers are exciting. Heath really got involved too.

It was not the most well played game they've ever put together but they were playing a good team that has a good defense. And they came out with the win. I'll credit Arians with getting Miller involved and running some screens to slow down the pass rush. I don't think our defense is going to collapse with out Troy. They won't be as good but they'll still be tough. I have hope that our offense will come around and take some pressure off the defense.

One win in the books. It's a much better start then the last time we were defending Super Bowl champs.

Timmons has been practicing on a limited basis this week. With Polamalu out we really need him healthy and playing. Tyrone Carter is a good backup and he can do some of the things that Polamalu can do but not nearly everything. Timmons would be important because his talents extend beyond his position like Polamalu's do and he would give LeBeau that variable player that can line up in different spots and do different things. When Troy gets back the tandem of Polamalu and Timmons should drive offensive coordinators insane.

I think what pisses me off the most is that they just didn't have the intensity they need. They need to realize that they are the Super Bowl for alot of the teams they are playing this year.

The Bears were playing their home opener a week after losing their best player. They spent the entire week hearing how the season was lost. You knew they would come out with everything they had. And the game was still the Steeler's to lose. And they did because they just failed to play with intensity and focus. They are going to set themselves up for major trouble if they continue to do it.

Well we've probably seen the last dropped pass from Sweed unless there's an injury. Shaun McDonald will most likely move into the 4th receiver spot. Wallace has earned himself the 3rd spot. And since the Steelers don't use 5 receiver formations Sweed might as well find a comfortably spot on the bench and take a 3 hour nap on Sundays.

The more I watch Hines Ward, the more I like him.

Yeah, I know what he means, but it just kind of seems like he wants to be his first game ever IN Pitt.

If I didn't know any better I'd think that was the case...

Can Collinsworth please stop breathing.Fixed.

Fucking defense in the 4th quarter AGAIN. You'd think after the last 2 weeks the last thing you would let happen is the defense breaking down and giving up quick and easy score. And that fucking onside kick....who didn't see that coming a mile away? Why was the second row of blockers not moved up so if what did happen happened there would be help there to jump on the ball?

I'll say this. With the way the offensive line absolutely OWNED the San Diego defense all night there is NO WAY the game ever gets that close, or even competitive, under Bill Cowher.

The fumble return for a TD can't be laid at Tomlin's feet, that was just a fluke. The onside kick can probably be blamed partially on the head coach, but the special teams coach is a tool for not putting his hands team on the field.

The score should have been 38-14.

Hoagie

The fumble return for a TD can't be laid at Tomlin's feet, that was just a fluke.
Ok let's list what can be laid on him.

1) 4th and inches and he goes for it on his own 30 yard line. They picked it up so it doesn't seem like a big deal. But they didn't last week and it turned the game around and was a big part of their loss. They would have lost tonight if they didn't get it.

2) The onside kick that caught nobody but the Steelers coaches by surprise. Actually it didn't. They had their hands team on the field. But they were horribly alligned so when the ball bounced away from the closest guy there was no one to help.

3) Almost 3 entire quarters of the defense giving up nothing and all of the sudden they can't stop anything? That's not a problem with a lack of talent. That's a mental problem. That rests squarely on the coaches shoulders. if you can't keep the plays in front of you then don't call defenses that make the cover guys sit back.

4) A halfback pass at the goal line? Against a defense that hasn't stopped the run game for shit all night? Again it doesn't seem like a big deal because it worked. Had it been intercepted, however, there's a good chance the Steelers lose that game.

Those are 4 major lapses in judgements or failures to prepare that could have cost them the game. This week they won because a couple of them ended up working. They're only 2-2 because the last two weeks they didn't.

As you've said, yourself....their O-line was blowing up the D-line all game long. There was no reason to not go for that 4th and inches. That's confidence in your line.

2) The onside kick that caught nobody but the Steelers coaches by surprise. Actually it didn't. They had their hands team on the field. But they were horribly alligned so when the ball bounced away from the closest guy there was no one to help.

Oof, if they had their hands team on the field, then yea, it's a coaching problem. I agree.

I'd lay this one on the entire coaching staff, not just Tomlin. The D-coordinator is the one calling the plays. He needs to figure out what the hell's going on in the 4th quarter and fix it.

4) A halfback pass at the goal line? Against a defense that hasn't stopped the run game for shit all night? Again it doesn't seem like a big deal because it worked. Had it been intercepted, however, there's a good chance the Steelers lose that game.

I agree that it was a risky call, but it also caught the defense completely by surprise. I have no problem with this play call.

I completely agree that Tomlin coaches differently than Cowher, but I don't think he's nearly as bad a coach as he's getting credit for.

Sorry I couldn't bring a better performance with me. Jeff Reed is a cunt. As is Arians...but we knew that already. It's really cool to watch a game from the plaza in Heinz Field. It's a great perspective and makes it really easy to see just how badly Tomlin was out coached in this game. They were overloading one side of the line all day and they didn't adjust to it until way too late in the game. But even then they still called very predictable pass routes and the receivers were just blanketed. They never tried any screens or misdirection. Granted it was a short week but I expect them to come up with something at least a little creative rather then just running the offense into the teeth of the defense.

And once again the Steelers offense averaged 4.4 yard a carry and wouldn't commit to the run even though the passing game was shit.

Blue Heeler

Probably because the Bengals defense is rated 2nd in the NFL, but the pass defense is playing better than they are rated.

Pittsburgh will probably wild card into the playoffs, there's just too much talent there for them not to make it in. It would be nice if Wines Hard would at least snap both his legs in half before the playoffs though.

It doesn't matter what the Bengals defense is rated. The performance is what counts and the offense was able to average 4.4 yards per carry. They should have kept it on the ground until the Bengals had to commit a safety to stop the run.

Actually, it's the W, not how you get it...amirite? :action-smThat's pretty much what I'm saying. Arians is too obsessed with style points rather then doing what wins.

But it's over and done with now. I was looking through the pictures I took on my phone and it reminded of something I saw that really took the anger away over this loss. I was taking pictures of the Lombardi Trophies in the Great Hall and, while there weren't alot there, there were some Bengals fans and they were huddling around the display cases taking pictures with all the trophies. It almost seemed ludicrous when you put it in the perspective of this group of people that just want one Lombardy Trophy to call their own and they're spending their time before the game visiting the six we have taking their pictures with them.
