(CNN) — Formula One motor racing legend Michael Schumacher has called off his comeback to the sport because of a lingering neck injury.
“I really tried everything to make that temporary comeback possible. However, much to my regret, it didn’t work out,” Schumacher said in a statement released Tuesday. “Unfortunately, we did not manage to get a grip on the pain in the neck.”
The seven-time world champion was to replace stricken Ferrari driver Felipe Massa in the European Grand Prix earlier this year in Valencia, Spain.
The 40-year-old suffered the injury in a motorcycle spill in February and has been troubled by lingering pain.
“I am disappointed to the core. I am awfully sorry for the guys of Ferrari and for all the fans which crossed fingers for me. I can only repeat that I tried everything that was within my power,” Schumacher’s statement said.
