They changed sponsors..Nextel now. Some of the races are moved around. But the most important change seems to be with the driver points. If I'm reading it right, there will be a shootout at the end now, for drivers in the top ten.
Ten-race showdown to determine NASCAR title

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Good thing for Matt Kenseth that NASCAR's new points system wasn't around last season. The champion would've finished sixth.
In a bid to add excitement and put more emphasis on winning, NASCAR changed its scoring system Tuesday by setting up a showdown for the Nextel Cup title over the final 10 races.
Kenseth took the 2003 championship despite winning just one race. He was rewarded for his consistency -- 25 finishes in the top 10.
That wouldn't happen under the new system, which readjusts drivers' points after the first 26 races in NASCAR's top series, which has had many recent championships decided early in the season.

I'm not really in favor of the new system. Last year provided
one of the best points races in history for both the Busch and
Craftsman series. Yeah it may have been boring for the cup
series, but Matt was just that good. We'll have to wait and see.

I don't know if I like it or not. From what I understand, they wanted to make Nascar more like the NFL, and institute a playoff system at the end of the season. It could be exciting, and will do away with points leaders cruising around the track for the last couple of races.

It's a long season and they felt like they were losing ratings
to the World Series and the NFL, so they're trying to make it
more exciting. I guess they want to stop the run away points
leaders who cruise to the end. Maybe it'll work, I guess we'll
have to wait and see.
Darkstar
01-22-2004, 07:03 AM
I think it will make the end of the season more exciting. Instead of 2 or 3 people competing there will be 10 within 50 points of each other. At that point its anybodys game.
Ballbuster1
01-22-2004, 08:33 PM
I guess that's what they are trying for. It does get boring
near the season end if someone is a runaway.
We'll see how it all shakes out.
Oh, and welcome to the thread Darkstar.

in the event. I've gotten into watching it since some NASCAR
drivers are competing over the last couple of years. Pretty
cool stuff.

The first 8 hrs of Speed's coverage is over. Andy Wallace has the
#2 car out front. This is due to the great rain driving of Jr & Tony.
For a couple of guys who normally don't drive in the rain they are
doin awsome! Jr got up to 2nd place (with only 1 spin, a no-harm,
no-foul type), and then Tony got into the lead and opened it up
so much that the driver change back to Wallace didn't even lose
the top spot standing. Way to go!!! Rolex's for the boys????

Yeah. Because there are so many restrictions on tabacco
advertising, RJ Reynolds couldn't even advertise their products.
And with all the big lawsuit settlements, it just wasn't in their
best interests to spend all the big bucks as a sponsor.

Tony was out in front with 30 minutes to go when something
in the rear suspension broke. He tried to ride it out, but lost
the L/R tire and hit the wall with 18 minutes left. Tuff luck.
Tony says he'll be back next year cause he intends to win it!
I don't doubt him for a minute.

:hi2: Daddy!!! I'm home !!!!:hi2:
I am so stoked for the upcoming season.
But I am not to happy about the new points system.
It was the same system that Dale sr. won 7 cups and gordon 4
Why all of a sudden dose it not work any more .....Hmmmmm......
I know why because a clean driver won it all . There is no drama about matt. He dosnt say anything to get him or his team in the headlines. He dosnt beat up reporters(stewart). He dosnt hang out with Hollywoods elite and rock stars ( dale jr). He dosnt have the looks of a jimmie johnson to be on the cover of G.Q. The problem is Matt has fans but no Hatters. At the race track he gets very little cheers and no boos. People just dont seem to be excited about him. And nascar relized this. And instead of rewarding a driver for a great season . There going to reward the biggest flash in the pan for a 10 week period. What nascar is trying to due is be like the NBA/NFL where the (bad boys) Are the heros..
p.s WELCOME RACE FANS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was a nice wreck! My brother is big time into racing and I was watching the race with him yesterday when that happened. I kept saying "Ahhh Michael's just showboating....trying to get the crowd riled up then he'll just "climb" on out of the car" LOL Gotta understand...my bro hates football, always says that when a player is lying on the ground hurt, he's just "playing for the crowd" and always gets right up after laying there for a few minutes....and sure enough, a few minutes went by and Waltrip unbuckled and climbed out of the car....

That's 3 in a row. He hopes to beat Sr's record of
winning the Busch Race 5 years in a row. Hope he
can do it cause in the current era it may be the only
record of his father's he can beat. Go JR!

It was 3 years today since Mike Helton told us that we lost
Dale Sr. in the wreck at the 500. It's my anniversary date so I'll
remember it well. We were getting ready to go out for dinner
after the race when we heard that Dale was dead. Totally ruined
the evening. Hate to see a good man go too early.
Rest well Dale.:wings3:

Alot of the Pontiac teams went Chevy with the demise of the

Great race, nice close finish. Good job for Matt.
I just don't understand how McMurray stayed on the track
while Matt & Kasey were in the pits and still gets left in 3rd.
I know they "freeze" the field when the caution comes out,
but they were in the pits , so they already relinquished the
lead to Jamie. I think he got effed. He would have swept if
he could have stayed in front.

I was watching The Speed Channel. Inside Nextel Cup, And they explaned the whole thing with frezzing the field at the drop of the yellow and all that........Stuff.. Even though Kenseth (My driver" won. I still don't agree with the rule. But It looks like it will be like this all year.....

Yeah, I don't deny Matt had a good car, but I can't help but not
like the "Freezing the Field" format when it comes to a caution like that.
Anyone who ended out up front had the best shot at winning the
race once they went green. McMurray had a fast car and the know-
how to win that race and I just felt he got cheated.

They are going to have to change this rule because ,, At tracks like Matinsville and Loudon. It can really srew up pit stradegy...Big time !!! Its no good for the sport ...Put it back were It was before ...It worked fine ....Leave it only.... Nascar.

NEXTEL ALL STAR RACE
The rules have been set .. Nothing realy new just more $ MONEY$
Here the article longish ..Kinda..Well for me it was:drunk:
www.jayski.com is were I got it from
Tuesday News Conference to Detail the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge UPDATE: Officials of NASCAR, Nextel and Lowe's Motor Speedway will unveil the format and other details concerning the 20th running of the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge during a news conference Tuesday, Feb. 24, in The Speedway Club at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge, the most exciting all-star event in professional sports, will be contested under the lights at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Saturday night, May 22.(LMS PR)(2-21-2004)
UPDATE: Since its inception in 1985, NASCAR’s version of an “all-star game” has evolved from a novelty to a showcase, a spring ritual of speed and daring resulting in yearly additions to the book of NASCAR lore. This year, the event (formerly known as The Winston) has a new name for its 20th running: The “NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge.” On May 22, it returns to Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. for the 18th consecutive year, once again featuring an exclusive field of 2003-04 race winners and past champions of the event, which will be televised live on FX (7:00pm/et). The NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge events will have a total purse of $4,095,000, an increase of $225,000 from the previous year. The winner will receive $1 million.
A total of 18 drivers already have qualified, and the talent-laden group is led by defending champion #48-Jimmie Johnson.
Also involved, for the first time: Nextel Communications: "The NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge is a marquee event for Nextel," said Michael Robichaud, senior director of sports and entertainment marketing for Nextel, the title sponsor of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. "It has been one of the most exciting events on the schedule since its inception because drivers aren’t competing for points – they race for pride and a check for $1 million. That format has created some of the sport’s greatest moments, which has made it a favorite for both drivers and fans. Our focus is to create an atmosphere that makes fans feel more connected to this all-star event than ever before."
The NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge has been held at Lowe’s Motor Speedway every year since its inception – except for 1986, when it was held at Atlanta Motor Speedway. “No other all-star event in professional sports has produced the drama and excitement this event has for nearly two decades,” Lowe’s Motor Speedway President H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler said. “Serving as the home venue for this event, we have worked hard to build equity and making the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge a real fan favorite. We have some things up our sleeve to make the 20th edition bigger and better than ever.”
“Through the years, this has become one of the obvious highlights of our season,” NASCAR Chief Operating Officer George Pyne said. “It is invariably exciting, and provides a perfect lead-in to one of our key NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series points events, the Coca-Cola 600, which is held in Concord the following week (May 30).”
The NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge format’s specifics follow. The NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge will have a minimum of 20 cars and drivers who meet one (or in some cases more) of the following criteria:
Drivers and car owners who have won races in either 2003 or 2004.
Active drivers who have won the championship of NASCAR’s premier series.
Active NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers who have won the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge.
The winner of the NEXTEL Open, a two-segment (20 laps/10 laps) preliminary event for teams who have competed, but not won, during 2003 or 2004.
As for the racing itself, the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge will consist of three segments totaling 90 laps/135 miles around the 1.5-mile Lowe’s Motor Speedway track. An initial 40-lap segment advances the top-20 finishers to the second segment. From that 30-lap sprint, the top 14 advance to the final segment, which is 20 laps. There also is the “x” factor to consider: A vote by fans will determine a random inversion (anywhere from three to 10 cars) of the starting order for the 20-lap finale.
Two races into the 2004 season, the following drivers have qualified:
Race winners: Michael Waltrip (No. 15 NAPA Chevrolet), Dale Jarrett (No. 88 UPS Ford), Matt Kenseth (No. 17 DEWALT Power Tools Ford), Bobby Labonte (No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet), Ricky Craven (No. 32 Tide Chevrolet), Kurt Busch (No. 97 Sharpie IRWIN Ford), Ryan Newman (No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet), Jeff Gordon (No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet), Joe Nemechek (No. 01 U.S. Army Chevrolet), Jimmie Johnson (No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet), Tony Stewart (No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet), Robby Gordon (No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet), Greg Biffle (No. 16 National Guard Ford), Kevin Harvick (No. 29 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet), Terry Labonte (No. 5 Kellogg’s Chevrolet) and Bill Elliott (No. 91 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge).
Past series champion: Rusty Wallace (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge).
Past event champion: Mark Martin (No. 6 Viagra Ford).
Car owners: Joe/Rick Hendrick (No. 25 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet) and Ray Evernham (No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge).

Saw and interesting ad the other day. If you finish last in every race you will get $2.9 mill in prize money. First in every race gets you $9.9mill. They charge $10 mill a season to sponsor the front hood and again for the rear hood and $3 mill for each of the rear quarter panels. Yeah, its big business, that alone is $26 mill a car in sponsorship and doesn't included the doors, front quarters, etc.

No doubt there's major cash being spent here. That's
why you see the same driver's up front week in and week
out. It's just like any other sport, $ gets you the best
people and you gotta spend it to make it.

I got a question: Who is it that actually likes this NASCAR thing? Almost every single one of my friends is a sports fanatic, but I don't know a single person who's ever even watched a single NASCAR race. I even have car buddies (including myself) who keep up with WRC racing and F1, but nobody who can stand NASCAR. I just don't get it. I tune in for ninety seconds and the turning left gives me a headache. Is it just that you're fascinated with cars with carbuerators?
I mean, seriously, I don't know a SINGLE person who's into this garbage. How can it possibly be profitable?

If you have never been to a race, and just watch it on TV, you'll never understand the appeal. Sorry you don't care for the sport, lots of people do. I don't care for wrestling, but I don't go into their threads and tell them that...:biggrinfl

It's the classic Americian battle : Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge.
You can't drive an F-1 car but you can buy a Monte Carlo,
an Intrepid or a Taurus. Granted not the race version but
it's closer to a race car than a Honda Civic! If you love the
sound of an 800 h.p. V-8 you get it. If whiney fuel-injected
4 and 6 bangers turn you on, you won't get it and probably
never will. Just like I'll never understand how fake wrestling
can be called a sport. To each his own.
neverspeakawordaga
02-29-2004, 02:06 PM
See there's the thing; I've tried to get it. I really have. I'm a huge car fan (though really not so much American cars in general), and a huge sports fan... it just makes no sense at all to me.
I'm not trying at all to denigrate the sport or anything, I'm just really trying to understand the appeal. I've driven oval courses before, so of course I know that there's skill involved in turning left over and over... but there's also skill involved in threading a sowing needle and crocheting a pillowcase, but I wouldn't want to watch somebody do it.
As for the cars... a front wheel drive family car with a supercharged V6 (like the Monte Carlo SS) that somehow has less HP than a Nissan Altima, doesn't offer a manual transmission, and pulls only .85g on a skidpad just doesn't seem to me to have anything even remotely resembling race roots.
And all too often, American made V8's have one thing I just absolutely can't fathom having in a car I'd actually own (well, aside from pushrods): live axle rear suspensions. I couldn't imagine actually owning a car that didn't have an independant rear suspension. This isn't 1965. Sure, a Corvette has a nice suspension... and the next time I have $50 grand to buy a two seater, I'll let you know how it rides. Actually, I won't, because I'll be using that money to buy a BMW M3.
And you can't drive F1 cars, but you most certainly can drive WRC cars. Sorry, but if I've got a choice between a Monte Carlo SS that does a 15.3 second quarter mile, pulls a .85g on the skidpad, and brakes from 60 in 135 feet, and a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution that does a 13.1 second quarter mile, pulls a .95g on the skidpad, brakes from 60 in 110 feet, and actually has 4 usable doors... well, the Evolution costs more, but if you add in the leather seats on the Monte Carlo, then IT costs more. Just seems to me that it's a no brainer.

Don't sweat it if ya don't get it.
See, on a nice day like today this is what I drive:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/v3451/convert.JPG
Definately NOT a Mitsubishi Eclipse.
When I drive down the street the pipes set off
car alarms. That's good old Americian Horsepower!
That's what it's all about. No traction control, no independant
suspensions, no on board computers, Just good ol Americian
V-8 iron trying to run fast without crashin. (although a good
wreck is part of the fun!)

It's cool, I like all kinds of racing. My Dad ran SCCA, and ran at Lime Rock. My Grandpa was a bootlegger, and ran Nascar in VA.
Guess it's in the blood. I still go to Lime Rock in the fall to see the old F-1 cars run. I still say that if you've never been to a Nascar race, you won't understand the appeal. It doesn't translate to TV.

Ya know what ...? I this world of selfish ball players and $100 mil contracts... I love to see things like this ... I will now and for ever root for Hermie ..... I know Spot has been for awhile and I can see why .......Thumbs up to Hermie .....
Fans help out Long: It has been one of this week's most amazing sports stories, and a quite emotional one - dozens of NASCAR fans have nearly inundated Carl Long with checks for $25 or $50 to help him rebuild his race car from the remains of Sunday's crash [at Rockingham] as he tries to continue one of stock-car racing's most improbable quests. Long, a driver from Roxboro [NC] now living in Troutman, is trying again to put his racing life back together after the off-season sponsorship collapse of the Travis Carter operation. "It's something I never thought would happen," Long said in amazement. "The fans have been going to my web site and sending in money, close to $4,000 now. That means more to me.... I'm going to try to send 'em all something, a postcard or something, maybe with a before-and-after shot of the car. The crash appeared to doom Long's comeback bid. But then Hermie Sadler jumped into the deal and is loaning Long his car for next week's Las Vegas race and the Atlanta race the week after.(see full story at the Winston Salem Journal)(2-28-2004)

Hi BAllbuster!!! Wow, you've got a HOT car! Sets off the car alarms - I love it! Like you said, nothing like good old American horsepower! I'm so in love with the yellow this year. Been looking at the Monte Carlos in that color. There's a Na$car edition in yellow, but there's also just a "plain" yellow without the decals. It's so me.
But, the gentleman of the household wants a new truck, so I'll probably get his hand-me-down Mountaineer...... but that's okay, I've got my #8 sticker on it already!!!!

#38 fastest in happy hour. Right behind him is pole sitter Kahne.
This kid may be a new star. He finished 2nd to Harvick in today's
Busch race. That's 2 - 2nd place finishes in a row. He's gonna have
a tough season though. He's running both the Busch & Cup series

I wish him good luck. That's a tall order to fill once they start

By this time his father had been "Rookie of the Year" and a

I think 43 is a good number for the super-speedways..but what about at Bristol and Martinsville? Or even Darlington, which is essentially a one groove track. Wouldn't it be better to go to a smaller field, like maybe 36..or 32. I agree with the past champions provisional..but it may be time to rethink some of the others..Article (http://www.nascar.com/2004/news/headlines/cup/03/21/jgordon_wreck/index.html)
Ballbuster1
03-23-2004, 10:26 PM
As much as it pains me to admit it, Gordo has a point. Due to the
lack of teams without full time sponsors, the field is left open to
smaller, less organized teams. This does create a problem at times.
Problem is, how do you develop a standard for who can race and
who can't? Make them run within a certain percentage of the fastest
qualifier? Most teams don't have alot of provisionals so they still
need to race their way into the show. It's a problem that needs to be
addressed, I'm just not sure how it wil be fixed.
SpotcheckBilly
03-23-2004, 10:38 PM
It has to be done at qualifying. Set a minimum speed for each track, and enforce it for qualifying, and race day. You don't make the speed, you go home. and that wreck was stewarts fault..lol.
From: racefan3815 Mar-22 11:36 am
To: bmallen (5 of 1012)
50.5 in reply to 50.1
I think that there should be a minimum speed requirement in qualifying, just as there is during the race. Any car that can't run within a certain percentage of the pole speed should not be eligible to participate in the race. I don't care if that car belong to DEI, PE or a small independent team, they should not be given the opportunity to compete.
Ballbuster1
03-23-2004, 10:49 PM
No doubt Stewart punted him. He was in Tony's way and
Smoke didn't like it.
My point with qualifing is that the smaller teams don't have the
provisionals to get in anyway, so they get a good lap and get
into the show but still can't hold their own on race day. They're
still there. How do they fix that?
SpotcheckBilly
03-23-2004, 11:53 PM
Minimum speed for each track..for qualifying as well as race day..they have to do something. The fields are too clogged, now. Black flag them, I guess if the can't stay in the percentage of track speed. no easy answer, Buster.

But to me, Happy Hour is far more telling. Two-lap bonsai runs on sticker tires don't give a true indication of a car's performance potential.
Maybe like F-1, they need a qualifing session not just a quick lap or 2.
Alot of guys can put it to the boards for a quick lap, but can they maintain it?
That's where the problem lies.

Earnhardt spun in Turn 2 and radioed his crew that he had intentionally spun out to keep from losing a lap. In numerous post-race media interviews Earnhardt continued to say he had intentionally spun his car to create a caution that prevented him from losing a lap.
"The driver of the No. 8 car was quite vocal in admitting he intentionally spun out his car to cause a caution condition on the track, which is clearly prohibited in the NASCAR Rule Book," NASCAR president Mike Helton said. From NASCAR. COM
Jimmy, you've obviously got your Saturday afternoons free, and your Toyota remarks created more media attention than you figured. If a Toyota team called and said 'Hey, we want you to drive,' would you do it?
The whole thing about the whole Toyota truck deal that bothers me – nobody, none of the reporters that I saw – reported the whole thing the way it was supposed to be reported.
But that is life. You know, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, at least that is what I was taught in school.
http://i.cnn.net/nascar/2004/news/features/conversation/04/10/jspencer_convo/spencer6.jpg
And it was meant to have a fun intent to it, and if they went on and listened to that rest of that answer to the question, about the building the Houston plant and the way Toyota is going to help the Truck Series, the whole nine yards, they missed the whole thing.
I think sometimes people are blindsided. They keep their blinders on like a racehorse and they don't want to know what is going on beyond what they want to focus on. To me, that thing got blown way out of shape.
I think Toyota is going to be good for the Truck Series. Once again, will I drive one? I'll drive anything that has four tires and wheels on it. Gotta luv Jimmy, even though he's not real good, he's real people! LOL !

Some Rockingham Notes/Comments: Rockingham has gone the way of North Wilkesboro. And Hickory. And Bowman Gray. And Raleigh. And Asheville-Weaverville. The news out of Daytona is, once again, sad. We will race no more at North Carolina Motor Speedway. NASCAR will sacrifice it for a second race at Texas as a part of a convoluted settlement of a convoluted lawsuit. NCMS will be dropped from the 2005 schedule. The next schedule will also be without one of the Darlington events, the old track finally losing out to progress and legal battles. Phoenix is expected to add a second race for the 2005 season as the sport continues a trend away from its Southern roots toward nationalism. The official announcements will not come until later in the summer, and few people in the sport were willing to talk as the news trickled out this week. People in and around Rockingham were more than willing. "We're mad, we're angry and we're disappointed that we weren't given a chance," Rockingham city manager Monty Crump said. "This was a done deal. We were set up to fail." There's a lot of truth behind Crump's claim. The races at Rockingham could've easily been saved by moving the winter race to the summer, by adding lights and by NASCAR acknowledging that North Carolina Motor Speedway was an important part of the sport.(more at the Roanoke Times)(4-23-2004)
2nd Race at Vegas too? even though it wasn't mentioned in the TMS getting 2nd race in 2005? story, am hearing that Las Vegas Motor Speedway has a good chance at getting a 2nd Cup race in 2005.
AND ISC wants Bruton Smith to give up the all-star race, which has been at Smith's Charlotte track for nearly 20 years, a gift from R. J. Reynolds. Smith says he is adamant about keeping the race. However sources say that Smith has been offered a second Cup race at Las Vegas in exchange for the all-star race. The all-star race, after all, does belong to NASCAR, and it could easily be "repossessed." Whatever happens to the all-star race, it is not expected to remain as a race on a standalone weekend.(Winston Salem Journal)(4-23-2004)

Yea it sucks. I heard that Vegas may be renovating to have 3 grove banking, each at different degrees like they did at Homestead. The problem with the Rock is that the races weren't selling out. IMO the best racing is short track racing. Bristol is my favorite track, and probably why Rusty Wallace, the king of short track racing is my favorite driver. There needs to be more short tracks made. I would LOVE a short track race at the Meadowlands, something like Richmond styled track.

I don't know why the fuck people are bitching so much about the ending of this race. Not just here but everywhere else. Did everyone forget that this was one of the most exciting Talladega races ever? Can anyone recall another time that there was more bumping between cars here than at Martinsville? All the lead changes( 54!!), bump drafting, all the fucking great driving by drivers saving their cars when being hit and going sideways. That was one helluva race. Sure it sucks that they didn't finish the race under green but they already passed the lap for a red flag. When the yellow came out and the field was frozen Gordon was in the lead, and the replays show that, so that's that. NASCAR doesn't do green/white/ last lap restarts at Tally and Daytona due to saftey. With the ways the cars are set up today and how they race so close why take the chance of having that shootout when one car can crash and cause yet another big one at the end of the race? It's not worth the risk of the drivers saftey and cost to the teams. Not to mention that it was taking a couple of laps to clean the track anyway in the previous cautions, and they wouldn't be able to clean the track in time for a 1 lap shootout. The idiotic fans throwing shit on the track didn't fucking help either. That disgusted me and made me ashamed to be a NASCAR fan.

Oh, and may I just add that I just got a Monte Carlo SS??? No, I'm not that much of a fanatic, it's not red!!! It's Silver. I'm calling it the Milwaukee's Best Chevrolet. Though, there's just a few #8 references on it........nothing permanent like a bumper-sticker. Had a red car, just a big target in my opinion (pretty though) almost hurt my baby-girl had it been a small car. It was a Chrysler LHS. Stop laughing, I know it's not cool, but it was luxurious. Then, I let my daughter drive it, so much for that.

Just finished watchin the tape I made of last night's races.
Sterlin brought the Coors Light Dodge home in 1st place for
the elimination race. And in a new twist, fans voted Ken Shrader
as a tranfer to the big race too. Nice.
In the main event they ran 40, 30, and 20 laps.
Matty brings it home in the end and snags a cool
million bucks. Beat Newman about 2 laps from the
end. Even NICER !:icon_mrgr

The "World 600" is the original name for the race, going back to when I was a kid, and the Charlotte World newspaper sponsored it. I use the original name, because I don't feel like shilling for Coca Cola. Just a personal thing, I guess.

from jayski.com, my man Rusty having some fun. Man I hope there's some video of this, I wouls love to see it.
Rusty hits 228mph at Talladega: #2-Rusty Wallace gave a new meaning to the term "high speed communication" on Wednesday afternoon when he piloted his Miller Lite Dodge at speeds up to 228 mph at Talladega Superspeedway. "We hit 228 (mph) at the end of the straightaway and averaged 221 (mph) for that overall lap segment," an excited Wallace said late Wednesday afternoon as he prepared to head back home to North Carolina. "It was a helluva deal that I certainly will remember for the rest of my life. We'd all been wondering what it would feel like to run at Talladega again without the (restrictor-) plates and now I know. I'll bet we could be running speeds up to 235 (mph) without the plates if we spent time doing some tweaking. But I'll tell you this - there's no way we could be out there racing at those speeds," Wallace offered. "It was neat to be out there running that fast by myself, but it would be insane to think we could have a pack of cars out there doing that."
Wallace's high-speed opportunity came at the request of NASCAR officials on behalf of series sponsor NEXTEL and Racing Radios, the Hampton, Ga.,-based company that serves as the "Official 2-Way Radio provider" for all three of the major NASCAR racing series. "I've enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Racing Radios and I jumped at the opportunity to assist them with their 'Communication of the Future' program for NASCAR," Wallace said. "We were invited to bring our Miller Lite Dodge superspeedway car down for the test to assure quality audio at high rates of speed. The NASCAR, NEXTEL and Racing Radios officials were all extremely pleased at the end of the day, so I'd say that we did a good job for them." Wallace's speed far exceeded the official track qualifying record of 212.809mph (44.998 seconds), set by Bill Elliott on April 30, 1987.
"I guess it was about as official as you could get as we were operating under the watchful eyes of NASCAR," chuckled crew chief Larry Carter, who flew to Talladega with Wallace after testing at Sonoma, Calif., on Tuesday. "John Darby (NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Director) and Buster Auton (long-time series official who has served as the pace car driver since 1997) were in charge, along with officials from Racing Radios and NEXTEL. So, there were plenty of witnesses on hand.(Tom Roberts PR)(6-10-2004)

to Nascar's constant changing of the rules. They really need to get

On a lighter note......great beatin and bangin between Harvick &
