Early prediction for East and West Conference Finals winners and SCF finals Winner.

East
Philadelphia over Pittsburgh

West
Vancouver over San Jose

Finals Winner
Vancouver they were already good and improved the most this offseason.

I think Washington will win the Presidents trophy but wont make it to the Finals unless Varlamov improves his glove hand high.

East
Pittsburgh over Washington

West
Chicago over Vancouver (Luongo chokes yet again)

Finals
Pittsburgh over Chicago

They just look way too strong for me and they have too many guys returning.

San Jose will win the President's trophy but get knocked out in the 2nd round by a team that actually plays defense in Vancouver.

Some other predictions I think we should do.

Hart Trophy - Pavel Datsyuk
Calder Trophy - John Tavares
Vezina Trophy - Brodeur....fuck all you people who call me homers :)
Surprise Good Team of the Season - St. Louis...with their maturity year last year and the return of Erik Johnson, I expect them to contend for 2nd place in the Central.
Surprise Bad Team of the Season - Carolina...while Cam Ward is always solid I feel there are a lot of missing parts on this team, on defense especially, who last year had a very magical run in the playoffs.
First Coach to Get Fired - Sherman in Colorado. That team is really bad and he's going to get the boot quickly to make room for Roy.

EAST: Washington over Philadelpha
WEST: Chicago over San Jose
FINALS: Chicago over Washington (it's do-or-die with their salary cap issues)

Calder Trophy - Hedberg (unless Varlamov wins out the starting job in Washington)
Vezina Trophy - Nabokov (why not? who saw Tim Thomas winning last year?)
Surprise Good Team of the Season - Tampa Bay Lightning
First Coach to Get Fired - Calgary's coach

EAST: Washington over Pittsburgh
WEST: Chicago over Detroit
FINALS: Chicago over Washington (too close to Garys, so I had to at least change the two east/west finals teams...but I'm also agreeing it's CHI and WAS in the Finals)

Hart Trophy - Patrick Kane
Calder Trophy - John Tavares
Vezina Trophy - Cristobal Huet
Surprise Good Team of the Season - Tampa Bay
Surprise Bad Team of the Season - Buffalo
First Coach to Get Fired - Randy Carlyle

My fuckin Isles are 4 days into training camp, and there are already 3 injuries. Weight and Bergenheim have groin pulls...Frans Nielsen has a knee injury, bad enough that he got sent back to NY to meet with team docs. Fuckin bullshit.

Yeah, another Islander down with what may be a serious injury. Fuckin ridiculous. Okposo may have had his head down though, but the hit appeared a little late and he may have left his feet. I can't see a good enough angle. It made the game pretty interesting.

Edit: Here's the hit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-XEMlMRP-M

I think it's legal...was it necessary though? IMO, not when Okposo already has two guys on him in the neutral zone and in preseason. It's also now hard to tell if his head was down...it looks like it is, but he was first shoved from behind. Fuuuuck, I don't want him to turn into a Brett Lindros!

Agreed. I think that's what it boils down to. Completely unnecessary, especially when the player is in a vulnerable position and has two guys covering him. If it's not Okposo and it's say, Tim Connolly or other guys with concussion histories, that probably ends their season before it even began...or even career. Stupid. Alot of people are also talking about the "code" of owning up to your actions...Phaneuf avoided any challenges for the rest of the game. Maybe he thought it was only preseason and didn't think he needed to drop the gloves. Isles and Calgary play again on Saturday. Phaneuf is not expected to play though.

Okposo is somehow ok. They took him to the hospital and was listed with a mild concussion.

TSN is reporting this as well, but that they're still putting the final touches on it. Coincidentally, Eklund, who, prior to the Heatley trade, announced that Heatley was staying with the Sens, announced last night that Toronto and Boston are nowhere near done to a deal for Kessel.

I would think some youth/picks are going back the other way though. I would've asked for Schenn+. And if not Schenn, then I'd expect a 1st rounder+. I'd even take into consideration that I'm trading my top, young player within my division...thus raising the cost more.

Edit: Two firsts and a second? Eh. 2011 is a very weak draft, but 2010 1st rounder would be the big get. Doesn't this put Toronto over the cap as well?

What really boggles the mind is, that at the draft, Brian Burke didn't want to give up ONE first rounder and a roster player for him, but he was willing to give up 3 picks 2 months later. I don't get it. Most Toronto fans are unhappy with this one.

Kansas City bombs tonight. The Kings and Isles are playing at the new Sprint Center in Kansas City...this was the highly advertised game to bump up support for a Kansas City hockey team (NYI?)...or at least, another professional sports franchise.

gc, see now to me, nhl in europe would hurt the north american part of the sport more than the khl would. if you put teams in europe why players from those countries bother coming here anymore. Wouldn't someone like Henrik Lundqvist play in sweden where he lives? Of course some like america, but a lot of them still live in their native countries so it would be easier for them to just stay there. You bring up straka all the time, he left the nhl to play for a team in his hometown.

Bad situation for Wayne, but the last thing the coyotes need is a coach who makes almost as much a year as Redden and Rozsival combined. The Coyotes could bring up a coach from the minor's. As the Pens did last year and the Caps did the year before. Spend that 10 plus million on players instead of a coach.

I would just dissolve that cursed Phoenix team. I can say with confidence that they are in much worst shape than my Isles...and that says alot. I remember mentioning this in the past, but this franchise (Winnipeg-NHL and Phoenix eras) has won only 2 playoff series...the last one occurring in 1987. Ouch. And I had suggested that the one thing they had going for them was Coach Gretzky being the longest tenured Winnipeg/Phoenix coach in history. Tippett is now the organization's 21st coach in 30 years. Both Winnipeg and Phoenix teams have had to deal with the talk of relocation, bankruptcy, and being in the red. And really...only a select few draft picks (Phoenix era only) have panned out thus far...alot of duds.

No wonder there's a lack of interest in Phoenix hockey.

Wouldn't it be better for hockey to start later, like in the middle of October. I mean one minute there is preseason hockey and then before you know it, the regular season starts. Well...low risk, high reward for the Isles. This is a cocky kid...and he's just gotten a wake up call. Be a career AHL'er or strive to make the NHL. He's got to work on his skating and his defense.

My prediction...he spends most of the year in Bridgeport. Scott Gordon has been challenging his younger guys to become better players defensively. Schremp will probably find this out the hard way and he'll continue to think he needs to get back to playing "Rob Schremp hockey". There's a chance he can work on his skating to become average and net a good career in the NHL. But...I think it's more likely he'll be a Sound Tiger for quite some time.

He offered me NHL Center Ice for free...and threw in $10 off for the next 12 months (only because I mentioned Dish would give me a good deal). Fuckin perfect! Alot of people are getting this deal...or at least most are getting just the free Center Ice.

I gotta say though...I've yet to get a obnoxious customer service person from DirecTV. They've all been really knowledgeable, very nice...and easy to understand. White, english speaking people. Awesome.

the customer service is good when you are trying to rip them off, but when they rip you off they pretend like they don't know you. I was a A+ customer for 6 years and they stole 500 bucks from by debit card and wouldn't refund any of the $500 worth of equipment they told me i needed which would eventually not work.

I'm sitting pretty with Fios. Legs up, VSHD in 100% pure hd.

Wow...lotsa news going on before the season gets underway...

Mats Sundin retires (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=293154).

Sergei Kostitsyn gets demoted to Hamilton, does not report, gets suspended by the Habs, and demands a trade (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=293177).

The Isles are doing away with their white away jerseys next season and going back to the retro royal blue to match their home retro blue ones...leaked by the President of the sound tigers.

Cam Ward gets a 6-year extension at a $6.3M cap hit. (http://www.capgeek.com/)

So wait. They are going to have Blue jerseys at home and on the road? How is that going to work when they play a team that has a Blue Jersey? That doesn't make sense to me, but neither does teams wearing dark jerseys at home. They need to get rid of this already.

No, I should've been more clear...sorry. They're going to unveil a new white away jersey copying the one they unveiled in Bridgeport today:

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/584/yvdtwzmjddzilfn20090929.jpg

They're officially dumping the navy blue and going back to royal and dumping the ugly piping on the jerseys. The home royal blues that served as their alternate last year was supposed to be their new home jersey this year, but they were too late in submitting the paperwork to the league. So, they will remain as an alternate jersey this season, then become permanent in 2010-11 with this new away jersey.

And I was so hoping a return to the fisherman. :icon_mrgr

Well...they're tied to that shithole mausoleum until 2015...so they'll definitely be here until then, especially since the county and SMG have had no desire to negotiate a buyout of the existing lease. But I get what you mean. Nassau County has given the full go ahead for the Lighthouse project and they are unveiling the new lease agreement with the Isles tomorrow...pending of course, Hempstead's approval of the Lighthouse. The ball is entirely in Hempstead's court right now...yet they apparently have no intention of voting on it before Wang's deadline of this Saturday. Which means by Monday morning...he should be fielding calls from other spots in the NY market to move them (again, that $450 million Cablevision contract is no good if the team moves out of the market) or fielding calls from other cities to sell the franchise...then have them move to that new city in 2015.

Chris Botta says there's at least 7 groups that would show some interest...one city in Canada, but he said it's not Hamilton or Balsillie. Maybe it's Winnipeg? Kansas City, definitely. Maybe Vegas or Portland? Then NY sites...Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Connecticut. Those have been, at least, some of the rumors going around in the past.

MUCH better than what they have now. I really don't like the block coloring of their unis right now. I can't wait for the season to start!

I just don't like the piping on the shoulders and arms that some teams have. They look like glorified practice jerseys. But I am glad to see teams like the Isles go retro again.

Yeah...if the destination would be Brooklyn...Wang would remain owner of the team and would not budge on the name. And they'd still technically be on an island...so the name still fits. I would expect the Rangers would seek a higher territorial fee since the Isles are closer...I think the Isles pay them like a couple million a year.

I heard an interesting thing a few years ago from one of the local papers...it might've been Daily News...and it involved moving the Islanders to Brooklyn with the Nets, and resurrect the old Brooklyn Americans franchise. An interesting scenario, especially since the Americans' former owner felt he was forced out of business due to the Rangers and swore that the Rangers would not win a Cup while he remained alive...which was the case. Interesting...but not bloody likely since the Isles have a pretty strong identity in the area.

Speaking of news....

Bankruptcy Judge says fuck you to BOTH Balsillie & Bettman (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=293208)

BAUM TURNS DOWN BOTH BIDS FOR PHOENIX COYOTES

After months of back-and-forth disputes over who would ultimately obtain control of the Phoenix Coyotes franchise, Judge Redfield T. Baum turned down both bids by the National Hockey League and Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie on Wednesday.

"In hockey parlance, the court is passing the puck to the NHL, who can decide to take another shot at the sale net or it can pass off the puck," Judge Baum wrote on Wednesday.

Balsillie said he would not appeal the decision. In a statement, Balsillie said, "nobody can deny that we are now a big step closer to having a seventh NHL team in Canada. It doesn't matter who owns that team. When that day comes, I will be the first in line to buy a ticket to the home opener.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank my family for all their love and support. I also want to thank the more than 200,000 fans who supported the bid online and the countless others who contacted me personally to show their support. This bid always was about the game we all love," said Balsillie.

Judge Baum threw out the $242.5 million (US) bid by Balsillie, saying it could not work because he could not properly satisfy the NHL's rights regarding relocation. "In the final analysis, the court cannot find or conclude that the interests of the NHL can be adequately protected if the Coyotes are moved to Hamilton without first having a final decision regarding the claimed rights of the NHL and the claims of the debtors and (Balsillie)," he ruled.

He then ruled that the NHL's bid of $140 million would not work because it allows the league to specifically select which of the creditors will be paid. The NHL said it would pay all their creditors in full - with the exception of former head coach Wayne Gretzky and majority owner Jerry Moyes.

"There has been no determination that the Moyes and Gretzky claims are not 'legitimate creditors.' It would be inherently unjust for this court to deprive them of their possible rightful share of any proceeds without first providing all involved a fair trial on their claims."

Baum's 28-page ruling says the Balsillie bid was denied "with prejudice," which means he cannot come back with an amended bid. As far as that bankruptcy court is concerned, it is done with him. The NHL offer was denied "without prejudice," meaning that the door is open for league to come back to the court with an improved offer.

"We are pleased that the Bankruptcy Court has confirmed the League's rights to select its owners and the location of its franchises,'' Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement regarding today's ruling. ''We are reviewing the opinion and considering how we can best address the Court's concerns regarding our offer to purchase the Coyotes. It remains our goal to secure the long-term stability of the Coyotes in Glendale."

Judge Baum noted in his ruling that the Coyotes have total losses of over $390 million between 2004-08. He wrote that "the Coyotes have not been a particularly successful team on the ice having never won a playoff series since moving to Arizona. More importantly, from a bankruptcy perspective, the Coyotes have lost money every year since moving to Arizona."

The Coyotes originally filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 5, opening the door for Balsillie to make an offer to buy the club. The initial offer of US$212.5-million was made, conditional on the team moving north to Southern Ontario.

The NHL quickly responded, claiming they had been in control of the franchise since November 2008. The league insisted that because they were running the team, majority owner Jerry Moyes did not have the right to file for bankruptcy.

A week later, Hamilton's city council approved a lease deal that would leave the door open until October, for the Coyotes to call Copps Coliseum home. The NHL contended that that territory belonged to the league, making it impossible for the Moyes/Balsillie deal to be completed.

As Balsillie's group pushed forward, they announced Labatt Breweries and Home Hardware as corporate sponsors if and when the team made its way to the Steeltown.

The NBA, NFL and Major League Baseball all voiced their support behind the NHL's stance regarding ownership transfer and relocation. Each league provided documents urging the courts to help them set a precedent in these matters. Judge Baum ordered Moyes and the NHL into mediation to establish who was in charge of the team.

In late May, Balsillie filed an application to the NHL Board of Governors, asking them to approve him as a potential owner of the Phoenix franchise. Balsillie also announced a $150-million renovation plan for the aging Copps Coliseum, to upgrade the facilities.

While no resolution had determined, in June, Judge Baum stated that the NHL had a right to demand payment for a team moving into the territory of Southern Ontario.

By the end of July, the NHL Board of Governors had voted unanimously (26-0) to reject Balsillie as a potential owner.

As the issue hit a fever pitch, Balsillie requested that the U.S. Bankruptcy Court probe the reasoning as to why the NHL owners' determined he was unfit to own a franchise in their league.

The league put their support behind the bid of Chicago Bulls and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf in late July, but the bid was withdrawn on August 2. The NHL stepped up with their own bid of $140-million and another group, Ice Edge Holdings, also made a bid of $150-million.

The Ice Edge bid was short-lived and was withdrawn on September 9, after the group announced it was unable to work out a new arena lease with the city of Glendale.

As the date of the auction drew closer, Balsillie raised his bid to $242.5-million.

On the first day of the auction, Judge Baum told both bidders he might not award the team to either party.

Day 2 saw both sides make alterations to their respective bids. Balsillie adjusted his bid to ensure Glendale would receive $50-million if he was awarded the team and removed a deadline of September 21 for the sale to be completed.

The NHL changed their bid around so that $14-million of the money would be split between Moyes and Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky.

At the conclusion of the auction, Judge Baum made it clear he would take time to make his ruling. He said he wanted to word his decision clearly for the next court under the assumption the ruling would be appealed regardless of what it turned out to be.

The Coyotes opened camp on September 12, but Gretzky was not there due to uncertainty with his contract.

Phoenix was 36-39-7 last season and finished 13th in the Western Conference last season.

This is for Directv customers only.

Here is what you do:

Directv customers including those still under contract. I guarantee this will work. First off make the call. Ask for customer retention. Then it will ask question of whether you want to change program or cancel. Choose cancel option. That is critical. Because when you get to talk to customer retention they already know that you intend to cancel. Tell that you understand that they have to do what they have to do with Versus, but say that you can't go missing any hockey games this year. They may at the point just offer you CI for free right away. If at that point they don't offer it, they tell them you have already called Dish and they offered to pay your cancellation fee and give you CI for free. (I never called Dish) Explain to them that you like Directv and don't want to leave but you have to have hockey. That should work. I got CI for free. Good luck all.

It took 5 minutes of my time. Be polite, but firm.

is anyone signed up for the NHL online. They fucking charged my card the $159 for the season, and it's not letting me access the fucking games. It keeps throwing me around in circles. Asking me to sign in, then if I want the service do I want to pay monthly or at once. When I click on watch live game, this is whee it takes me. The payment already cleared my account, so I know it went through ok. WTF!!!

I checked everywhere, it was a renewal from last year. In the email I got, they said no further action was needed, I'm so fucking pissed right now, i should just walk away before I break this fucking computer. An of course, the Bruins are up 3-0, why would I want to see it. Fucking cunts, called the phone numbers, but I got a busy signal, Fuckit, before I have a stroke, I'm gonna walk away

I'm sitting here screaming at the cpu because the NHL online website won't let me watch the games online that I paid for, in the fit of rage I'm having, I completely forget I have XM and could at least listen to the goddamn game. Not that it matters now, I'm beyond fucking pissed and don't give a shit, but I really need to learn to control my temper

hopefully, but I couldn't watch the game the other night either, but as of Thursday the payment hadn't cleared my account, so I figured that was why. My laptop is only 6 months old, so I know that's not the problem. oh well, I'll listen and try the phone again Monday during business hours

Back from the Caps home opener. The Caps' scoring line of Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin is probably the best offensive threat in hockey. The team looked sharp, but really got lazy after building a big lead.

I like the way this season is starting, though.

Well...got the first goal and first assist out of the way. :rockon"

It was overall a great game to watch. Tavares had some really golden chances...Okposo too. They will be a great duo down the road. Fleury had a great save on the Tavares breakaway. Overall...my team lost in the shootout...but the two points to kick off this kid's career makes up for alot of it. The missed shot in the shootout kinda stung though. I guess he's a bust. :icon_cool

Wang to consider relocating islanders.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4529489

Well...the deadline is passed, and if it's one thing about Wang...it's that he keeps his word. Just ask Sean Bergenheim or Zdeno Chara who wanted to play hard ball with the Isles and ignore Wang's "Sign your qualifier by September 20th or sit the season". Bergenheim fired his agent over it.

It is amazing that this cunt decides to call Wang personally a day before his deadline looking to negotiate and to amend his project. Then, when Wang tells her to keep this conversation private...he ends up reading about it Saturday morning. Actually, I first heard about it Friday night, a couple hours after the call. You know that cunt or her associates were on the phone with Newsday and Botta as soon as she hung up with Wang.

We're on about 10 years since Wang bought the team, about 5 years since the original Lighthouse project took shape. That was scaled down since the 60-story tower wouldn't get approval. So, 2 years with this current proposal. Since then, the County has given their full support, but the town of Hempstead is suggesting that they'll support renovations of just the Coliseum with stimulus money. That's it. They then start sending mixed signals. And now this. The first thing Wang said last night is that he better start speaking russian...regarding the Russian billionaire who purchased part of the Nets. I'm thinking at this point, Wang should just tell Hempstead to go fuck themselves and get this team to Brooklyn or to the site in Queens. He's given Hempstead and the county plenty of time to get their shit in order. Let them risk tens of thousands of jobs and have that Coliseum and Marriott rot away on that site.

ginaf20697

Seriously. If I was him I'd have just been looking for a better place from the beginning. Hempstead is a shithole and it's only going to get worse without the Isles there.

It's obvious now that Hempstead doesn't want the Lighthouse project. Chris Botta just posted a link to a Newsday story where Kate Murray and Hempstead pols are now putting everything back on Wang (http://www.newsday.com/long-island/nassau/hempstead-pols-wang-created-his-own-deadline-dilemma-1.1499979). By voting it down, Kate Murray and Hempstead pols lose alot of support. But by laying blame on Wang and RexCorp for shoddy and incomplete plans (even if they're elaborate and have been available for two years), they can kill the project and keep some support.

If you remember back about a month ago, Hempstead intentionally set a meeting for 9/22, the date the Isles and Wang were set to be in Kansas City for the game against the Kings. They did this because they assumed Wang wouldn't show, and they can then blame him for playing games and not showing up to this meeting, even if Kate Murray had missed numerous previous meetings. Well, Wang canceled his trip to Kansas City to be at the meeting. Hempstead also planned for this to be a vigorous Q&A that would hopefully wear down the Lighthouse group. They were grilling Wang's team on issues and questions for ten hours... shit that had been covered over the course of two years and even suggesting that Wang's partners at Rexcorp couldn't even figure out how many buildings are in the plans (just count them in the fuckin aerial view of the plans). It made the Lighthouse group very agitated, to which Hempstead followed up with a "well, they clearly don't have their act together, they can only blame themselves." A day before Wang's deadline, Kate Murray calls Wang to "negotiate" and to see if he'll scale down the project a bit. She was hoping he'd say no and that the negotiations are over, which she can then go to Newsday and say, "welp, I'm trying to get thru to him to get answers and he won't even meet with me now." Wang said the negotiations are over, but that he'd hear her out. So now, Hempstead is hammering away on the "we do not have everything we need from the Lighthouse group and their arrogance from the 9/22 meeting just shows that they have no idea what they're doing."

Kate Murray and Wang will meet next week...but according to Wang, she'll have to compete for his time since he has bragged that their may be as many as 8 potential groups interested in the franchise. She'll ask him to scale the project down, Wang will say no, and she'll then kill the project on the grounds that they cannot get the full details of the project (bullshit) and Wang is not being cooperative. Meanwhile, Chris Botta is interviewing her opponent in the next election tomorrow. So long Kate...hit the bricks toots. But importantly, so long Islanders. Hopefully, Wang can work a deal in Brooklyn. At least they'll have rail access, which the Lighthouse plans lacked. But I think this may spell the end of hockey in Uniondale.

It's obvious now that Hempstead doesn't want the Lighthouse project.Lemieux ran into alot of these problems at the state government level thanks to that fucktard Rendell. Wang really needed/needs (I don't know if it's too late at this point) to create a grass roots movement in the fan base to get them to make their opinion known. Rendell didn't want to pledge any state money toward the new arena and would lay the blame on the Pens and Lemieux's group. But the Pens put the word out to the fans and organized several rallies that thousands showed up to to make it crystal clear that if the Pens moved out of Pittsburgh the blame would be directed at Rendell alone. Faced with the showing of voters making it known that he would be held accountable Rendell gave in and signed a deal to partially fund the arena project. Of course being the cunt that he is, he came back later and tried make up a reason not to give them the money and the Pen's ownership group made a public trip to Kansas City followed by a couple more rallies and finally Rendell made good on his deal.

The big difference here is that Wang is not looking for money. That's what makes this very political. He and his group will pay for the whole damn thing...no taxpayer money, no stimulus, nothing, just reap the benefits of the added revenue and jobs over the long term. He just wants them to say, "Sure, you can build your project on this 70+ acre plot of land...something we've been promising this franchise since it began in the early 70's". There has been more than just some hacky video...there's been rallies and many supporters have turned up at these hearings. But no, it's not enough. But, I honestly don't think much can be done at this point. Like I said, there has been talk to develop the surrounding land since the Coliseum was built, and talk of renovations to the facility since the mid-90's...it ain't getting done even if it's free.

Well...it looks like Queens may be the first to talk to Wang (http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islanders/chamber-of-commerce-eyes-islanders-move-to-queens-1.1501382). Being from way outside of the NY market now, I greatly favor this more so than Uniondale. Wang gets a brand new arena (despite a possibly more scaled down Lighthouse at Willets Point), rail access (a new subway series with the Rangers), and they can partner with the Mets. It would take at least 5-6 years...which is perfect since the lease expires in 2015. Speaking of the lease...I was wrong in the past, there may be an opportunity for the Isles to terminate the current lease and move before 2015. In 2007, the county and Wang agreed to a clause allowing the Isles to back out of the current lease if Nassau legislators do not approve the new 99-year lease that were set to unveil in the future. They proposed the new lease last Thursday and they have 120 days to vote on it. They will not vote on it until Hempstead approves the project. Without a vote after 120 days, Wang can terminate the lease at any time and move the team.

On another note...I heard Alexei Semenov nixed a contract offer from the Rangers because his wife didn't want to go to NY. He instead is headed to the KHL. I'd love to hear that conversation...

"The Rangers offered me a contract and a shot as a 6th or 7th d-man on the team".

"OH, the big hockey star wants to play in the biggest city in the world! Haven't you ever considered MY wants and needs?"

M.A. Bergeron signs with the habs as Markov's replacement. Bergeron has a heckuva shot and is pretty good on power play. Everywhere else, he would compete for a spot on an ECHL team. He did stand out in Anaheim a few years ago...but alas, he was paired with Chris Pronger, who covered his ass when he made a mistake defensively.

SPORTSNET.CA: Mark Spector recently reported if NY Islanders goaltender gets anywhere close to healthy to look for Isles GM Garth Snow to offer either Martin Biron or Dwayne Roloson to the Detroit Red Wings.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Of those two I believe Biron is the most likely to be shopped as he's younger than Roloson by 8 years and carries a more affordable $1.4 million contract. As to either being offered to the Red Wings it's a little premature to make that assessment. Let's see how Wings backup Jimmy Howard performs over the next four-six weeks

Here's hoping Dipietro has made a full recovery. Wish the Wings would of kept Conklin as he was great for the Pens and Wings last couple years. I've seen enough of Howards goaltending and oversized pads.

Slowdown with the Great. If Ty Conklin was ever great he wouldn't be a career backup. He is a solid backup goaltender. That's it. Don't use the word great. Even Osgood isn't great. However Conklin is certainly a better backup option than Howard.

For Marty Biron, this was an "oh shit...I better sign somewhere since it appears I'm not going to get the money I want and I'm running out of places that would take me." He signed for a measily $1.4M and is on tap to split time with Rolie. DiPietro however, started skating during training camp and just last week, began facing shots, albeit not acrobatic, high intensity type of exercises. The plan is to still get him in a game by late November and ease him back into form, hoping there are no setbacks. The Isles also realized they have a pretty solid core of goalies in Bridgeport, who had exceptional camps (Lawson, Munroe, Koskinen)...so if the right deal comes around now, I can see them dealing Biron soon for a pick or prospect.

As a backup goaltender Conklin is indeed great. I think the Wings payed him 750k last year and he had a great record. He was great for Pittsburgh the year before when Fleury went down with an injury.

The point here is he's a backup.

Fuck the Leafs and Burke...

Report: Canucks To File Tampering Charges Against the Maple Leafs (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=294023)

It appears as though the Toronto Maple Leafs may be in a bit of hot water as they have been accused of tampering by the Vancouver Canucks.
In an interview with Vancouver radio station TEAM 1040 on Monday, Canucks general manager Mike Gillis stated that the Canucks are pursuing tampering charges with the NHL after Leafs GM Brian Burke's comments about a proposed Canucks trade with Tampa Bay at last spring's draft were made public.
Burke was caught on a recently-released bit on Leafs TV discussing a rumoured deal between the Canucks and the Tampa Bay Lightning that would have seen defenceman Kevin Bieksa (http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=kevin+bieksa), forward Alex Burrows (http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=alex+burrows) and the Canucks top pick (22nd overall) being sent to the Lightning in an attempt to grab Swedish defenceman Victor Hedman (http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=victor+hedman) with the second overall pick.
Gillis told TEAM 1040 the Canucks have brought the matter up with the NHL and that he was surprised that Burke would allow the conversation to be made public.
"There are certainly some issues that the league needs to take control off when players' names are being thrown around. You're talking about lives and families and those things need to be kept confidential when you may be discussing a transaction of some type. There was a mention of player's names, which was very upsetting for them, and it doesn't make me feel very good."
Earlier in the summer, Maple Leafs' head coach Ron Wilson made remarks that could possibly be interpreted as tampering on a Toronto radio station when he stated that the Leafs' would be interested in going after the Sedin twins during the free agency period.
The Canucks have decided that enough is enough and are bringing the matter up with the NHL; however Gillis told TEAM 1040 that he does not expect a major confrontation.
"Listen, I don't anticipate a fight with anybody, however we're going to protect the integrity of this organization and our players. If anybody wants to take a shot at them inappropriately, we're going to protect our interests."
Gillis stated that he is concerned about the precedent being set if the Maple Leafs are allowed to walk away after making comments about players on other NHL teams.
"Once the league becomes involved in a very serious matter it isn't prudent for us to talk about it. It isn't prudent for us to threaten or do anything or escalate a situation. The league is the watchdog here and it's up to them to deal with these issues as they see fit. And, as a member of the league, our owners want protection from anything that may be adverse to their interests. I think that's common to every team in the league, I think every owner would expect that, and that's what we expect."

I never thought the day would come that I would actually feel bad for the Flyers but when it's only human nature to pity a group that has gotten owned by a team so badly year after year that it results in them running the goalie at the end of yet another loss and Scott Hartnell has to bite Chris Letang's hand. That's right...from Broad Street Bullies to little bitches that have to bite and pull hair. On second thought I would feel bad for the Flyers if their team plane crashed tomorrow.

Notice that faggot Richards run Fluery and not even come close to hitting his head on anything but hold it like he was hurt so no one would beat him up. Then notice the scrum where Letang, on the far left of the scrum, turns to the official after being bitten by Hartnell. The Flyers aren't bullies. They're sissies.

This story just came out of nowhere, but it has some legs:

http://www.theprovince.com/entertainment/Former+Nordiques+owner+mayor+meet+boss/2090774/story.html

Quebec City's mayor and the former owner of the Quebec Nordiques met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman Friday in New York City, the French-language television network LCN has reported.

According to the report, Mayor Regis Labeaume and Marcel Aubut discussed the possibility of Quebec City getting a new NHL team.

The meeting took place as rumours are swirling about a new arena to be built to replace the old Colisee, where the Quebec Nordiques played from the time they were established in the World Hockey Association in 1972 until the franchise was sold and moved to Colorado in 1995. At the time, Aubut wanted the provincial government to chip in the funds needed to build a new arena.

Bettman has said that building a new arena would be a key to establishing a new franchise in Quebec City.

LCN reported an announcement either about the arena or a new NHL franchise could come next week.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the Nordiques come back in the NHL. Maybe they'll do the right thing and retire Sakic's number based on his ENTIRE career with the franchise, unlike those faggots in Colorado.

Caps news
Nylander and the Caps
The Washington Capitals, I'm told, have been close a couple of times over the past few weeks in loaning veteran center Michael Nylander to a KHL team in Russia. But it hasn't happened yet. The Caps would still have to pay him the majority of his salary ($5.5 million this season, $3 million next season), but, at least under this scenario, they could get a Russian team to offset some of the salary. Plus, the big bonus for the Caps would be getting his $4.875 million cap hit totally off the books. There's still hope something will work out with a Russian team. Jaromir Jagr is apparently pushing his team, Avangard Omsk, to land his former NHL teammate.

Not surprising that Jagr wants to play with him given the success they had together in New York. Wonder what happened to Nylander.

Yeah....Chris Botta is reporting it as well (http://www.islanderspointblank.com/2009/10/report-lighthouse-project-goes-dark/) that Wang has pulled his plans...per the Long Island Press. Botta left messages with a few from the Lighthouse group and they've yet to return his call. The theory is that Wang did meet with Kate Murray and it's believed that it didn't go well at all. You know Murray was demanding that he just renovate the arena and leave that sea of cracking concrete undeveloped around it. The ball was probably put in his court and his reply was rightfully to go fuck herself and to enjoy that rotting arena...err, convention center for years to come. That and the fact that it's likely Murray gets re-elected in a month, so Wang must've felt that all hope is lost.

I'm hoping he's already had talks with Brooklyn and/or Queens. At this stage, I just don't see a group from outside of NY getting a deal done with Wang to move the team. In other words, expect Bettman, a guy who reportedly grew up an Isles fan, to step in the way and try to keep one of the league's historic franchises (I know, I'm probably being bias by saying that, but not many teams in sports have accomplished what they did) in the same market.

Hard to believe Lidstrom has 1000 points. The goaltending is in doubt, wish the Wings would of kept Conklin. He outplayed Osgood in the regular season last year which admittedly was not hard to do. I know Gill isn't much of a fighter, but a guy that much bigger shouldn't have been outmuscled the way he was here.

None so far? I guess I was imagining things when Steve Valliquette shut out the Ducks on a Sunday Night at MSG. Although after seeing Valliquette play against the Sharks on Monday, maybe I was imagining that.

The first Saturday of the season every team played. The next night everybody was off. And this past Sunday there were no games. That's it. Not every Sunday this year. It has nothing to do with competing against the NFL. The Rangers always schedule Sunday afternoon games during Football season which I always find mind boggling.

In fact Sunday November 1 Rangers host Boston at 1pm.

It then took me a little while to remember Burke coughed up his 2010 1st and 2nd overall picks to Boston. What a deal this may turn out to be for Boston. And I would take great pleasure in seeing Toronto fans watch the Bruins step up to the podium with their top 3 pick next year.

For anyone going through weekend pick'em withdrawal, there's a cool "#NHLPick15" contest that NHL.com and Twitter are doing for the upcoming weekend that has all 30 teams in action.

The best part is that the grand prize is round trip airfare, accommodations and a pair of tickets to any NHL game this season (not including Winter Classic, booooo). But you have to get all 15 games correct to be eligible for the grand prize. The tiebreaker is predicting the total number of PIM's for the day.

Yeah it's a longshot, but I'm making my picks and gunning for a Canucks@Canadiens trip.

Because no favoritism has ever been showed to Sidney Crosby, right? Despite his headhunting in the Finals, and that bitch slash to the foot after a game. Way to represent, Captain.

And the same for Malkin, who definitely shouldn't have been suspended during the Finals for drawing an instigator penalty in the final minutes of a game. Even though that's the rule. Right?

Ovechkin's penalty was dangerous, but it was incidental, and a result of him playing hard and aggressively positioning himself. I'm sorry he can't post himself in front of the net like that cunt with the Cup in your sig, that he tries to be a two-way player.

Oh, Ovechkin has played one less game than Crosby this season. So far he has:

Six more goals
Three more assists
Six more points
A higher +/-
Eight fewer penalty minutes
One more game-winning goal
26 more shots
20 more hits

And before you bring it up, Ovechkin should have been suspended for his hit on Gonchar. But again, at least it was done trying to make a play.

And the Pens are leading in points, but Pittsburgh's schedule has been soft so far.

if you were gonna go for crosby not getting the full penalty he should have the slash wasn't much, i would have shown his third man in try to punch a guy in the nuts for some reason, which should have been an auto suspension for 3rd man in. and about malkin good point, but you could simply youtube malkin slew foot rangers. he does it, with a worse kicking motion when the puck was no where near him, and could have injured mara(i think) a lot worse. also shoulda added the slash whoever it was had on semin that broke his hand which resulted in him "choking", because he's not canadian of course. i wouldn't really bring up ovechkin trying to be a two way player, he gets back when there is a breakaway or 2-1, but he really doesn't care too much for defense, buts that fine if you look at his numbers of goals allowed when on the ice in comparison to when he's not on the ice. he also did nothing wrong with his hit on gonchar, gonchar tried to jump out of the way at the last second, if he took the hit he wouldn't have gotten injured, he got scarred. and pitt can't choose who they play, all they can do is win they games they do play, which they have done, but it doesn't mean shit if you can play the first month of the season.

OV's not getting suspended because of a lack of malicious intent. Pronger's a superstar and he's been suspended a ton of times because you can see that he's trying to hurt people. That slewfoot was the result of the way AO plays: in 6th gear at all times and hitting everything he can. See his hit on Gonchar for a good example of how he'll often keep his leg out on hits, too. Nothing on purpose, it's just the way he plays and I'm sure eventually he will get suspended for something. To call him a dirty player is reaching a little bit though. He's had a lot of borderline plays though for sure.

The story of former linesman, Pat Dapuzzo... (http://nhl.fanhouse.com/2009/10/27/pat-dapuzzo-reveals-anguish-depression-after-skate-severs-his-face/)

It's a bit long, so I'll only post the first part of it.

For First Time, Dapuzzo Reveals Anguish, Depression After Skate Severs His Face
by Christopher Botta

I don't care how tough you are. I used to think I was pretty tough, that there wasn't anything I could not handle. I was a kid from New Jersey who became an on-ice official in the National Hockey League. Nothing could stop me from chasing my dreams. Well, what I've learned over the last year and a half is that there is always something that can bring you to your knees.

I haven't talked much with anyone about this yet. But the good news is, slowly but surely, I'm starting to feel a little better. I finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. I'm ready to talk about what happened because now I feel that maybe I can help some people. My story is far from over, but here's what I've got so far.

When Steve Downie was checked by Fedor Tyutin and we became entangled along the boards, Downie's leg whipped around and his skate blade cut my nose off. There was a hole in my face. I was on all fours and was bleeding badly. I thought I had lost my eye. Other than that, I don't remember much about the immediate impact of the skate hitting my face. I was later diagnosed with a concussion from the collision, after they sent me to a trauma center in Camden, New Jersey.

When I saw three fights had simultaneously broken out between the Rangers and the Flyers after Tyutin hit Downie, I tried to break them up. I guess I was delusional, but I'm old-school -- always was and always will be. I know I was a mess, but my job was to monitor those altercations and end them. If you watch the tape, I actually shove (referee) Kelly Sutherland aside so I can try and do my job. I was thinking that if my mentor (former NHL linesman and supervisor) John D'Amico was looking down from heaven, he would have kicked my butt for not taking care of business.

Jim Ramsey, the Rangers trainer, came on the ice and got me. He put a towel over my eyes. I could not see a thing from all the blood. 'Rammer' brought me to the Flyers' trainers. Their doctors sewed my nose back on. It took more than 40 stitches. The doctors were alarmed because my left eye was drooping. They told me I could not go back on the ice because I could die. My face was fractured. That was when I realized this was more than just a brutal cut.

After 24 years, my career as an NHL linesman was over in an instant. The damage to my face was worse than just my nose being severed.

There were 10 fractures in my face. My right cheekbone was shattered. Between the accident and all the surgeries I've had, I lost all of my teeth. I lost my sense of smell. I developed sleep apnea. I dealt with terrible earaches caused by bone fragments in my right ear.

I still suffer from post-concussion syndrome. There were times in the first year after the accident when I couldn't get out of bed for weeks.

I have almost no sense of taste. My wife Lisa would make me my favorite -- her thin crust pizza. So I could taste it better, I kept sprinkling cracked pepper on it. I still couldn't taste a thing, so I'd put on more and more with each bite. By the time I was done, I pretty much went through the whole bottle. Worse, I was sweating like I'd just run a marathon. My wife and I decided I shouldn't do that again.

I couldn't work. I loved my job as an NHL linesman so much, and now it was gone. And never mind that -- there wasn't any job I could do. Whenever my heart rate would rise a little, the headaches would be debilitating. I couldn't even work out.

I was depressed. I couldn't function like anything close to a normal adult of 50 years of age. We have three boys, great kids now in seventh, eighth and ninth grades. They would ask me, "Dad, what's wrong? Why can't you come out with us?" Not being able to do anything, not being able to explain to your kids what you're feeling, is probably the toughest time I had to go through.

Did this happen last year? Don't remember this.
I'm surprised things like this don't happen more often. He did a good job of not impeding the play, then Downie's skate came around Ouch. Be cool if they could come up with a skate blade that doesn't slice through your skin and still works on the ice.

Decent Article about the high number of star players out with injuries this early in the season. They missed Detroit, who should be on the list with Datsyuk slightly hurt and Franzen out til March at the earliest.

Best part...

I hear a lot of "Poor Pat ... Poor Pat." C'mon folks, do not give me your sympathy. I graduated high school in New Jersey in 1976 and six years later became a linesman in the NHL. I worked almost 2,000 games. I've met almost every legend in hockey, worked a lot of the biggest games. I've met U.S. presidents and was invited to the White House. So many people dream of the life I've led.

"Poor Pat." Give me a freakin' break.

I would agree to get kicked in the face once a month if I could get back on the ice in the National Hockey League.

He is one tough SOB. He also speaks very highly of Bettman and the heads of the NHL, the NHLPA and the officials for what they've done for him.

was a good game, if ovechkin would have shot on those two 2on1's in the first instead of trying to pass to semin, i don't know if he would have scored, but it would have resulted better then passing to the defenders stick both times.

it's not that he wants assists as much as being on the same line as semin, him and semin both try to set each other up way too much. when they are on and aggressive, it's the best line in the league, but half the time they are afraid to shoot and try to get too cute.

Pssst....

The Isles/Caps game last night disappointed me....

Islanders are much better than their record suggests, and they're a very hard working team. Tip of my cap to them, even though I had to watch the win live.

Caps refuse to hit anyone, even last night when the Isles were getting aggressive with Ovechkin and Flash. I'd push them around too - clearly, no one on the Caps will do anything about it. And Green's botched pass killed us.

I know...it would bother a fan of the losing team...of course. But both teams seem to take some big time risks that made it exciting. Green's pass did hurt you guys though.

The Isles have played like that in at least 10 of their 12 games. The only problem is, it's not for the whole 60 minutes. They'll be dominant like that for 50 minutes, then clearly just run out of gas in the middle of the third. I believe it was Green who commented after the last game that he noticed the Isles were extremely tired in the third and he contributed that to their style of play...sending two guys in to forecheck and putting pressure on the opposition's defense. It simply means their forwards have got to skate and skate hard. By the time the third period rolls around, they're almost lethargic.

Unreal. I still don't see the Isles staying in the top 8...but with the way they've been playing and if they stay healthy...they might be able to remain there for a little while. Put it this way, I'm happy with the way they've played over the past 8 games (5-1-2), I just don't think they've got what it takes to keep it together for a full 82 games.

They seemed to have switched places with the Canes though. I was just listening to the radio down here...and GM Jim Rutherford was hoping he could wait a little longer before even considering shaking up his team, if needed it. But he admits that his team needs it and said he has already been on the phone with a few teams. So I would certainly expect the Canes to be one of the first to be doing something to salvage their season. Ovechkin is "week-to-week" with an "upper body strain." That's a nice way of saying he's out for a month.

For this not to fuck up any semblance of momentum the Caps have, Semin has to step up as the no. 1 left winger. He's talented as hell, but he thinks he's a Globetrotter on ice - and it fucks the team up sometimes. I'd move the veteran Morrison to top line center, because he's been really strong all season and Backstrom typically indulges Semin. I'd put Brooks Laich on the other side.

Problem solved... :gh::gh:

I've been impressed with the Islanders both games I've seen them play. They play really hard for a majority of the game. They're young and scrappy, but that's the reason they blow games late. When they really put it together (and it probably won't be this season), they're going to be a team to watch.

You might be right. I gotta admit, I did not expect to see a Matt Moulson or a Jeff Tambellini at a near point per game pace. I didn't even know who Moulson was prior to July. And I don't think anyone expected their D to be any good, but they've been surprisingly good once they got comfortable (especially Sutton). It would be a pleasant surprise to see them battling it out for a 6th-8th spot in the East...but I'll still stick with my 10th-12th prediction in the East. If the stories about DiPietro coming back healthy are true, and he's able to share duties with Roloson for the tail end of the season, I think they're a team to watch down the stretch.

Btw, I'm voting against Kate Murray tomorrow, and I don't even care who she is running against and what party they belong to. Fuckin cunt.

Good. Botta says her re-election bid is pretty much a lock...but I hope the voters at least send a message. It's also believed that the cunt is just waiting til after the election to officially kill the project unless it's scaled down to just essentially a renovation of the facility. If and when it's officially dead, Nassau legislators will likely not vote on the proposed Lighthouse lease and Wang can break the current lease at any time without penalty and move the team next season if he wanted to (and if he had anywhere to go...any room in MSG for a couple seasons? ;)) I'm passed the whole Nassau County mess though and I hope the team lands in Queens...it'd be easier for me to go to games when I visit family in Jersey. Granted, I'd hate seeing Nassau County residents get left with a steaming pile of shit in Uniondale with no tenants and the likelihood of major performers avoiding the facility for the brand new Barclays or the Queens' arena...but, the politicians should pay dearly when they lose revenue from the Coliseum.

This team is such a fuckin mystery. Especially for us fantasy fanatics. Carolina is always a team I try to stay away from, I'm glad I did this time around. They really are dismal.

They are a team that I've rooted for while my Isles are stuck in the shitter. And yeah, they are odd because you almost don't know where they're headed. I think bringing Maurice back was a mistake and they actually should've held onto Laviolette. Or bring a Teddy Nolan in. They're just wildly inconsistent, especially Ward who luckily seems to stand out when the games count (minus of course the Pittsburgh sweep). This is a guy that started his career with 6 straight playoff series victories. He's good, just not consistently. And Staal has been horrid so far this season.

Bruins have the cheapest owners in hockey since Rockey Wirtz died. No surprise they're owner was one of big supporters of the cap.

Problem solved... :gh::gh:

I've been impressed with the Islanders both games I've seen them play. They play really hard for a majority of the game. They're young and scrappy, but that's the reason they blow games late. When they really put it together (and it probably won't be this season), they're going to be a team to watch.

about ovie, he said he could play this weekend, bruce said 2 weeks. if this was the playoffs or important he'd miss 1 game at most. i like semin with backstom myself, but only as long as semin is willing to shoot like he did at teh start of last season. i personally think with ovechkin out, he's willing to shoot and not pass first.

about the isles, they looked good against the caps this year, but don't forget they didn't look bad against the caps last year either. not saying i don't like the makeup of the isles, cause i do, but the caps seem to see a team with a lesser record, take a lead and coast to ot win/loss. if they had beaten losing teams like boston did last year, they would have had the best record by 5 points or so last year, they play good against the better teams, and play down to their opponents.

Fuckin scary hit last week in the OHL. Michael Liambas on Ben Fanelli.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPj-kCp1rGI

I've heard Liambas being a guy much like Ryan Hollweg...a guy that had a knack for checking guys who were in vulnerable positions and hitting them from behind. Fanelli was in critical condition and had skull and facial fractures.

With that in mind, the OHL handed down a season long suspension to Liambas. He's apparently a repeat offender.

What the fuck is with shitty Newsday charging for online access? Not that their shitty Isles' coverage (from rookie reporter Katie Strang) was any good to begin with...but damn, they (and other newspapers like them) actually expect people to pay for access to their news...basically the same information you can get for free in other places on the Internet and on TV.

Chris Botta's blog is a perfect example of free Isles coverage that is far and beyond better than Newsday...and he doesn't even cover the team daily. Fanhouse now runs his Point Blank blog...and they were amazed that the blog had 1.2 million pageviews for October, far exceeding any month last year. And that's during a period when access to Newsday online was free. Now fans locked out of Newsday will just be steered to his blog.

Nylander has played great in the past, most recently with Jagr and Straka on the Rangers. He's still full price right now which is too much, I think about 4.5 million. As far as reentry waivers one of the teams with a worse record will snag him before the Wings. I honestly think he's want to go play in the KHL with Jagr. Could make for a tense locker room if a team he doesn't want to play for grabs him off waivers.

There are strong rumors that Crosby has been hurt for the last week as well. He hasn't looked himself over that time and there was an odd thing that happened before the Columbus game on the 30th. They called Chris Conner up from the Baby Penguins to fill Malkin's spot on the roster as he was missing his first game with his injury. They also called up Mark Letestu for some reason. There was only one spot left on the team plane and Conner was already on it and they went to great lengths to get Letestu to Columbus where he ended up not even suiting up and was sent back to the Baby Pens the next day. The rumor is that Crosby was a game time decision for that game. I f the Pens don't drop too many games over the next week or two and Malkin comes back it might not be a surprise if Crosby then misses some time due to an injury as well.

Canes signed Manny Legace. I didn't even know he was available. But definitely a good move without having to trade anyone and might actually help shake-up this team...but considering how many problems this team has, it's obviously not going to be enough.

They've determined that Ward will be out a minimum 3-4 weeks...and since there was damage to muscle, they really have no idea when he's coming back. Looks like they've become a legitimate contender for Hall.

i call it the curse of begbie

No kidding. I became an Isles fan in 86...the same season Mike Bossy retired at 30 due to back problems. I then thought they had a good shot at winning the Cup in 93, but I didn't see it happening after some fuckface named Dale Hunter took out Turgeon after scoring a series clinching goal. Then I thought they'd at least win a playoff series in 2002, but our best defenseman was taken out on a stretcher and best defensive forward blew out his knee. Haven't won a damn playoff series in 17 years. Canes won the Cup though...but, I wasn't really following them at that time. Once I started paying a little more attention and kept getting free tickets, they missed the playoffs, except for last season.

Fun fact: Penguins (without Shrek, Letang and Gonchar) have gotten blanked twice in a row now. The Capitals on the other hand - missing Ovie, Green, Schultz and Gordon - won 2 straight and scored 11 goals. Who is the one-man team now? Where's Superman Sidney?

Don't forget that Tyler Kennedy has been hurt and Brooks Orpik got hurt last night too. Half the team is injured and it was the worst possible time to have to go on a long road trip. These are the kind or trials you go through when your team has had back to back shortened off season.

You got that right the Wings are suffering from the same thing. That's the consequence of being a top tier team.

I mentioned Malkin.

Varlamov was clutch in tonight's shootout. I wish he were more consistent, but he showed a lot of poise.

And I'm not deluded enough to think that the Penguins suck, or they're done for the season, or they don't have a chance to ruin my summer - but right now, the Capitals are tops in the conference.

OH lol, i thought shrek was some player i've never heard of. and yea varly played very well, for some reason, if he comes off the bench, he seems to play really well. starting ok, but not nearly as well as off the bench.

You're absolutely right. If you think about last year's playoffs, Varly's very strong in pressure situations (except Game 7) - and when he's brought off the bench, the team is probably down big and needs him to step up.

It's the soft goals in easy games that kill.

honestly he didn't play great in the second round against the pens, he played better then you would expect. and he had that great save in game(i was there jus sayin) against crosby, but he also gave a few softies up. i'm not saying he was to blame for the series, and even if he had a good game in game 7 i don't see the caps beating Detroit, but when his brain isn't in there, he's a lot beter. and i'm drunk so this post is probably confusing.

It was yet another great game between the Caps and Isles. Alot of intensity and I thought it was going to be a high scoring game, but the play settled down quite a bit. Now, the pressure is on the Isles to go into Carolina and push their losing streak to 14. I'll be at this game and I'd usually feel pretty comfortable...but I'm getting a bad feeling that the Isles just might pull an absolute stinker and embarrass the shit out of me (nonetheless, it'll be Friday the 13th). Carolina is going to get a win eventually, and I just know I'll be in alot of trouble if it's against the Isles.

It's fuckin crazy that the Isles record is 6-6-6.

The Isles continue to impress me, and for some reason they match up very well against the Capitals. Three great games between the two this season.

Right on. And that's refreshing to hear, especially since the Isles aren't exactly healthy...Doug Weight is now out 4-6 weeks, Okposo has the swine flu, Comeau probably has the swine flu, and Martinek is out for the season. But again, I think it's the styles of play both teams use. Both teams are certainly not afraid to take risks at any point in the game. It's sort of the anti-trap. Unfortunately, the style the Isles play leaves their defensemen vulnerable because they've usually got two forwards in deep forecheck. That actually pissed Brendan Witt off for periods last season because he's a very slow skater and he thought there was too much open ice in the neutral zone for the opposition's skilled forwards to gain alot of speed. On the other hand, it's allowed him and Andy Sutton to step up and land a few good open ice hits.

I've always hoped that the Isles would model their rebuild after the Caps, because it obviously has paid off for you guys. It's all about building a young team that can compete for years to come. And I think the Caps, along with the Pens and Hawks (whom I think closely resembles what the Isles are doing) have that. Now, it certainly doesn't hurt having the opportunity to nab an Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin, or Kane (though I've got my fingers crossed on Tavares)...but I think building thru the draft is the best way to assemble a team that can stay in the top of the conference for many years. Although, it may be tough for some teams in the foreseeable future...outside of Hall, I really haven't heard much chatter of up and coming juniors and can't miss prospects.

IMO drafting isn't key, as much as devolping, and just the player itself. look at Detroit, datysuk was what, a 200 something pick, he wasn't great when he was drafted, sure he had skill, but there was a hell of a lot of luck and patience involved too. also, when a team failing in threat of leaving gets a "lottery pick" who has been proclaimed as the next gretzky since he was 12, it isn't good drafting, it's corruption. btw those pitt fans travel so well don't they? except when their team isn't the best in teh league, then they don't show up, and there is my drunk rant on pitt for however long until i get annoyed, and drunk. by the shitty ownership(do they have any, last i heard every other owner was paying to keep that horrible franchise afloat, pre "lottery" of course that is)

Giguere not happy with role. I don't see many takers given his inflated salary. As others have stated I would like to see him on the Wings but not for nearly 7 million a year.

Lots of good games tonight. Hopefully the Wings can build off of the 9-1 trouncing of Columbus.

Osgood is getting up there in years. I'm admittedly ignorant about the Wings - do they have any back-ups with starter potential, or prospects in the farm system?

Seeinred is the expert but in my opinion.
They've been taking baby steps with Howard for the past 3 years in the minor league. He has a real weak 5 hole, evidenced by the size of his leg pads above the knee. Don't know of any other prospects. I really wish the Wings would of kept Conklin, one of the best backups in the nhl the past few years. I hope the Wings pick up Marty Biron the day Dipietro comes back. Cause everyone knows Dipietro will last about a week.
