Meh, it's for the upgrade version though. I would strongly recommend a clean install of W7.

I believe you can still do a "clean" install with an upgrade, but you need a qualifying product to upgrade from in order to use it, ie: win vista, or like back in the day when you'd upgrade from nt/2k to xp you'd have to pop the disc in the drive from your previous os to get it to work.

if you have an MSDN or a Technet account, you can get it for free. The final RTM came out a month ago there. I've been running it, its great so far.

Not to many people have one of those though. They are pretty expensive.

i get through work, but $350 a year for technet is not expensive when you can download and get anything for free. windows, windows server, office, what ever you can think of, and any version. get it for one year and download everything.
or just pirate it for free.

So there's an OEM version of 7 out in the wild, works like a charm. Running it now, and it believes it has every right to be on my box. M$ seems to think so too, because I'm not getting any of those "genuine" messages anymore. Sweet.

I heard word around the grapevine that the "genuine" shit is being discontinued... it's looked at as an invasion of privacy.

about to install for my laptop. Also got $11 voucher for a backup dvd. fucking kickass... Too bad its just win7 upgrade though... I would have used it for my x-mas gamerig build.

I will let people beta test the pirated stuff a bit beyond the release date. with my luck I would get a BSOD or a big PWNED across the screen on October 22nd.

I dunno, so far it's behaving exactly as any legit OS I've ever seen. And Win7 performs masterfully. M$ got it right this time.

How many licenses can you get with a .edu email address?
I'd like to put it on my kid's laptop and try it out on mine since it's been getting rave reviews.

Heres how the MSDNAA admin at my school explained it.
the e-mail deal will give you 1 key which you can use for 32 bit or 64 bit win 7, upgrade only. The nice thing is you can get win 7 professional (in other words you're not limited to premium). For that go here...http://windows7.digitalriver.com/store/mswpus/en_US/DisplayHomePage?resid=G9hSBgoBAiMAAEgfhNcAAAAD&rests=1253443722687
If you go through MSDNAA you get a 32 bit and 64 bit key. These are good for full RTM versions of win7 professional just like Aero1 described.

I'm part of the compsci department at school so we get MSDNAA privileges.
I was going to buy this $30 deal because I wanted a full version that I could reinstall at my pleasure. I wanted to wipe my box and start over with win7, but you can't do that with the upgrade version they are selling to students?
If that's the case, what is the deal with the MSDNAA? It sounds like you only get a 1 time license? Is that a version that I can do a clean install with? What if I want to wipe again sometime in the future?
I wanted home premium but it sounds like MSDNAA version is professional? What's the difference? Will MS release a different version on the MSDNAA website on October 22?
By the way I hate the word "GENUINE" I've read it so damn much in the past couple weeks.

Thanks for the heads up. My kid thinks she might be able to get Win 7 free through school through some program, so I'm waiting on that.
I did get the MS Office 2007 for my kid through the original link for $59. Sweet.

I've got mine on the way... The boy gets a free upgrade to Win7 because he bought a new laptop. So, the $30 copy he's going to buy is coming my way.

You should get at least 2 (1 32bit, 1 64bit) licenses... its possible to get more for foreign language versions but you might have to request it.. not sure.
Is that a version that I can do a clean install with? What if I want to wipe again sometime in the future?
you can do clean installs with them and wipe them as well with the dvd iso(s). just keep your keys handy.
The e-mail program is totally separate which had me confused. Think of it as a discount to non-science majors. I'm in civil engineering so my department gives access to the MSDNAA free stuff. So far I've used my 32 bit key.
I wanted home premium but it sounds like MSDNAA version is professional? What's the difference? the main difference is windows xp mode... basically an XP virtual machine running right in win 7.
Will MS release a different version on the MSDNAA website on October 22? other than minor last minute patches? I don't think so. they're all considered final release versions.

Follow NewEgg on twitter. Gearing up for the Windows 7 launch they're having 3 webinars with Microsoft to demonstrate Windows 7 and its features. So far they had one and during that webinars they give away a free copy of Window 7 professional to an attendee chosen at random. At the end New Egg added a promo code to get $20 off Windows 7 Professional OEM or $30 off Windows 7 Ultimate OEM. They also promised to send out a survey to all attendees and 3 of those who filled out the survey would win a copy. Sadly those fuckers never sent me the survey, even though I got the registration email confirmation for the webinar. I guess that means they never sent the damn survey.
Missing survey aside the webinar was pretty cool and they will have 2 more before October 22nd. So follow them on twitter and at least get access to a new egg promo code to get money off Window 7 OEM installs. If you are lucky you can win a free copy.

For those curious about the Windows 7 versions they boil down to this
1. Windows 7 Home Premium: This is the for those who use their PC for entertainment. Internet, Movies, Games, Porn etc. If thats all you do then that is all you need. Don't waste money on a higher version.
2. Windows 7 Professional: If you work from home and need to join a Domain or access your home PC from work via Remote Desktop then you should get this version. XP mode for backwards compatibility is announced at this version and up, but it does not come with this version. Instead it's a download that goes live on Oct 22nd. My guess is after about a month or so it will be acessible for all versions. Aside from that it is exactly like Window 7 Home Premium.
3. Windows 7 Ultimate (rube edition): The only difference between this version and Window 7 professional is multi-language support and the ability to encrypt the data on your PC or USB drives. There are plenty of 3rd party tools that do the same thing for free. So unless you need windows to run in Chinese or Arabic this version is a fucking waste of your dooollllars (linger longererer).
The windows 7 review at Maximum PC summed it up well:
"Who should buy Ultimate? In our eyes, no one should, unless you desperately need multiple language support in the UI. As with Vista, the extras in Ultimate don’t justify the added cost. For most of our users, we’ll simply recommend Windows 7 Professional if you need to connect to a domain or use XP mode, and Home Premium if you don’t. "
