Yanks have historically done very well over the twins in the regular season and post season. Including 7-0 this year. I know they got Mauer but they were able to beat the twins even back in the Santana days (even though Morneau wasn't the Morneau we all know now and Mauer wasn't called up yet.) To show you how long ago the Yanks face the twinkies in the playoffs boston still had a curse and Arod actually had an rbi in the post season and as everyone knows AROD is phenomally awefull in the post season, I could dig out his numbers but I'm not gonna.

I dont understand how a team making it to the playoffs "would do wonders for the city and citizens of Detroit". Like all of the sudden the car companies are going to stop from going under and that hell hole of a city is going to rebound just because the Tigers are in the playoffs. The Wings won the cup 2 years ago and made it to a Finals game 7, in a town called HockeyTown, and it did nothing for them.

Speaking of Cabrera, I think that his at bat against Hughes could have been a turning point in the game. Cabrera being one of those players who are just pests, had me worried. Especially when he kept fouling off pitch after pitch. But Hughes stepped up to the plate by not giving in and striking Cabrera out.

Seriously, TBS really needs to do something about its baseball annoucers. I know there is nothing they can do about it this year. But its embarassing having to sit there and listen to guys like Chip Carey. Darling is okay, but doesn't deserve all the love that he gets in NYC.
No one should ever complain about Buck and McCarver again, after having to sit through Carey and Darling. Hell I would even take Miller and Morgan over TBS's annouce team.

You're right, but I wish the MLB would crack down on umpires actually calling the strike zone. The rule book clearly defines the strike zone, it's not up to the stupid umpire's artistic interpretation.

Something to keep your spirits up- The dodgers manager is the only manager to blow a 3-0 lead in real life and in the movie bad lieutenant it was the dodgers that blew a 3-0 serries lead so overcoming a 2-0 deficit is defenetly do-able in a best of 5.
I remember 95, and 01. Unfortunetly 95 sucked...Fucking Griffey, I still hold a grudge. 2001 was great though I loved the 1-0 "flip play" game where Mike Mussina out pitched a then good barry zito. Then the next day Jermaine Dye broke his leg of a pitch from Orlando Hernandez fouled off the leg.

Wainright and Holliday speak:
"I didn't see the ball and it hit me in the stomach," said Holliday, who made only one error in 63 games after being acquired by St. Louis from Oakland. "I mean, obviously, I can catch a ball that's hit right at me. It's very difficult to swallow. We had a chance to win the game. It was unfortunate that it happened when it did."
Wainwright shared the blame with Holliday and Franklin for the loss.
"This is a team game. And no matter how you win or lose it, it's a team win or a team loss," Wainwright said. "There's a lot of different ways we could have won that game. We could have scored more runs. I could have not given up the home run. So I'm not going to put it all on the bullpen.
"I mean, that ball got lost in 50,000 white towels shaking in front of Matt's face," Wainwright added. "It doesn't really seem fair that an opposing team should be able to allow their fans to shake white towels when there's a white baseball flying through the air. How about Dodger Blue towels?"
Although I don't like the whining, I kind of see his point. I thought the same thing when Jayson Werth misplayed a ball against the Rockies yesterday. Wouldn't red towels be a little less distracting? And isn't waving a white towel/flag a sign of surrender? I have one that they handed out during Gagne's run and it was mostly blue.
Absolutely

I think most stadiums are designed like that (I know Dodger Stadium is). I think it's more for fan comfort as the sun will set over a certain section (mostly the cheaper seats) and provide shade for a lot of fans.
I think their attendance would suffer on the weekend and day games during the summer. And if you set it up so the sun sets over the outfield walls, you'd make it really hard for the hitters.
Watch the highlights again. No one was waving a towel at the time. The whole place thought the game was over.

I watched the replay a million times but wasn't looking for that. I was too busy making cumsies in my pants. :)
I'd still rather see it done in the team colors, a la the Steelers, if at all. I was wrong about the Gagne towel being all blue, even though it is pretty blue. I was thinking of the "Think Blue" towel I got for some game promotion.

The one on the right is ironically, the one from the 2004 playoffs, the ones the Cardinals had no problem punking us on.
And yes, those are original Dodger Stadium seats that were over 40 years old from when McCourt redid the stadium. Thought they'd make a nice edition to my Dodger Shrine.
The Dodgers did some charity thing with a lot of the stuff they ripped out and put in those hideous Easter Yellow seats (which the players hate, by the way).

And the ALCS games will start at pretty much the same times as they've always have regardless of who you play. So, you will only have to stay up to midnight or so. Glad I didn't go.
They made so many terrible plays and gaffs this series.
Running into stupid outs: Rasmus game 2, Molina tonight running to third on a ball hit in front of him to short (What the fuck was he doing?).
Rasmus looked terrible on that ball hit over his head tonight
LaRussa should've left Wainwright in for the 9th in game 2, as opposed to pinch hitting the obese Glaus and putting in your worthless closer.
Holliday should have caught that ball, and not got hit in the cock.

And fuck TBS too. Getting Don Orsillo and Buck Martinez to call this series? What a fucking joke. Yastremski and Fisk were unavailable? I didn't mind them putting Orsillo there. They've had him do games last year but it made no sense for him NOT to do the Red Sox games. At least he's familiar with the team. Plus, if you take out the modicum of homerism in him he's not too bad of a play by play guy.

it would be interesting if we saw a Dodgers-Yankees World Series. you know the media's just waiting to exploit the Joe Torre angle of it.
Although that would be awesome, there's a few of us out west that would love to see a So Cal WS. ;)
I'm sure Fox and MLB would hate it as the ratings would definitely suck.

Hank and Hal would look like such asses when the Yankee fans give Torre a 10 minute ovation during the intros for game one. Torre would be an absolute blubbering mess out there.
I wish they would just show the guy the respect he earned and not treat him like he did some horrible thing.

The Joe Torre angle would be the big angle but a smaller more interesting angle to me would be that the Dodgers and Yankees would face off again, the 2 teams that would always face off in the world serries rematch. I could just picture Reggie throwing out the first pitch at yankee stadium.

The TBS pitch trax thing has shown just how awfully inconsistent the calling of balls and strikes has become. Youll see one pitch in the red called a ball then the next pitch it 6 inches further outside and its a strike.
There is no excuse for the Phil Cuzzy mistake but the twins did also have the bases loaded and noone out and still didnt score.
After watching 8 or so games on TBS, I've about convinced myself that their "pitch trax" thing is off. There is no way these umpires can be calling that many strikes on pitches that are clearly 3 inches off the plate........is there?
Prediction: Colorado wins tonight and Philly wins the series at home tomorrow.

I thought the same thing and it probably is to an extent but some of the pitches that have been on the outside corner have been called balls and then a pitch that is even further off is called a strike. It seems to point out more inconsistencies then accurate strikes. Im shocked the Umps havent had their union file some kind of complaint to get it removed

The players seem to be reacting to the calls as well. While I think the pitch trax might be a little smaller than it should be it would also seem that the umps version of the strike zone is all over the place.

It's kind of reminded me of the mid-90's strike zone. You know, back when Maddux and a handful of other pitchers were getting 4 inches off the outside corner.
I have no problem with an umpire giving a couple inches, just keep the same zone for 9 innings. The inconsistentcy is the problem, IMO.
Sucks to be Houston Street right about now.

8:00 is a better start time, but would it hurt Fox to start the game at 7:30. The games would be still be going in primetime, so they could still charge for ad rates and I think it would help the ratings as well.
If I'm not mistaken, one of the World Series games is supposed to start during the day. Which I think is pretty cool, but unfornuately its supposed to be on a Saturday. It would make more sense to have one of the day games during the week.

At one point, the total number of games between the Yankees and the Red Sox was 56 hours. That was before they played the final games in August and September.
Yesterday ESPN was showing highlights of famous October 14 games and the exiciting moments they had. Every game was a LCS one. Hell some of them were the final game of the series. Meanwhile, this year's LCS don't start until tonight. There is truly something wrong with this picture.

Cool article on Dodgers game 1 starter Clayton Kershaw. From Buster Olney at ESPN Insider.
Kershaw is the great X factor
The first inning that Clayton Kershaw threw in the major leagues lasted 32 pitches. He was 20 years old at the time, working too quickly, and learning an important lesson right away: If you throw the ball down the middle of the plate in the major leagues, you're not necessarily going to beat the hitters the way you would in the minors.
No, major league hitters will usually foul off a pitch down the middle, or drive it, and in that first inning, Albert Pujols mashed a double against Kershaw, driving in the first run the lefty allowed in the big leagues.
But that first inning also hinted at Kershaw's remarkable talent, because all three of the outs he registered came on strikeouts. He demonstrated then, as now, that on any given day, he has the ability to shut down any hitter in any lineup, or any collection of hitters. And in the 17 months since his debut, Kershaw has developed swiftly, learning, and making adjustments.
This is why Kershaw is the great X factor in this series against the Phillies, and perhaps in this entire postseason. Forget his 8-8 win-loss record -- he is capable of being the best pitcher in the next two rounds. "He gets it now," said one veteran evaluator, who has seen Kershaw pitch in person recently. "He has just matured. Nothing really surprises him anymore. He knows what to expect and he embraces it, and there is a comfort zone there that wasn't before."
He has made tangible changes, as well, sharpening his curveball. And gradually, his command of his fastball has improved. Millimeter by millimeter, he has taken his fastball to the corners of the strike zone, rather than just firing it over the middle of the plate, and the stats of opposing hitters reflect how tough he can be.
Some examples:
1.Hitters batted .200 against him, the lowest average against any starting pitcher (100 innings pitched minimum) in either league.
2.Hitters generated a slugging percentage of .282 against Kershaw, the lowest among all pitchers in the majors (100 IP minimum).
3.The OPS against Kershaw: .588, which is the third-lowest (100 IP minimum).
4.Kershaw allowed just 7 homers.
Kershaw's greatest challenge, in pitching against the extraordinarily patient veterans of the Phillies, is to be efficient, to not get into a situation in which he throws 50 pitches in the first two innings and is out of the game sometime in the fifth inning. The left-hander averages 17.7 pitches per inning, a very high rate.
"The efficiency question is probably the same [for all of the Dodgers' starters]," said the evaluator.
When he gets into a jam now, you will see Kershaw do something he didn't do in those first innings in the big leagues. He'll step back from the rubber, take some deep breaths and assess the situation -- and then get back to work.
---
These are Kershaw's regular-season numbers against the Phillies' hitters, who managed only one homer in 60 at-bats:

Gotta love Dodger fans. Down 2 and they hit into a double play and the fans are wrestling each other in the aisles to get to the exits. Do none of them remember the brake lights picture after Kirk Gibson or the Matt Holliday play from last week.
Meanwhile, this year's LCS don't start until tonight. There is truly something wrong with this picture.
Baseball should not be played beyond the 20th of October, IMO.
As was noted earlier in the thread, the WBC caused the regular season to start about a week later than normal. Most teams start the season pretty close to April 1st in normal years, it was closer to the 7th this season.

The real fans were still there. The people that leave early are there for the social gathering, not the baseball.

Sorry, but for the teams who still have baseball to play, the weather matters. If it wasn't always lovely in sunny L.A. we'd be hearing about that too, and when the series moves back to Philly we'll hear about their shitty, rainy weather.

I'm tired of that myth. It's simply not true anymore, especially since the Gagne days. I see the same thing, only worse, when they're playing on the road. Except in Florida. Guess there's no worries of a traffic jam when you're drawing 9,000 for a game.

I don't see what the problem is. Yesterday it got over 80 where I live. It was in the 70's for the Dodger game. We just need more SoCal teams every year. :icon_mrgr

Cool is one thing. The temperatures in the low 50s' at game time is reasonable. But the weather conditions here in NYC for a ballgame is a fucking joke. That being said, I think if it wasn't for weather, the days off for the LCS wouldn't have been a big deal. But that being said, the LCS should have started Wednesday at the latest.
But what are you going to do. Until the owners either vote to shorten the regular season or players get over not wanting to play doubleheaders, we are still going to have this problem.

Thoroughly being dominated in this series. Can't believe it was that close to a 2-2 tie. The Dodgers have no business being in the playoffs right now, much less advancing.
Two of the fucking things that got them there, relief pitching and offense, have utterly failed them right now.
I really wish Torre would just retire already. He might know how to handle big egos of a team like the Yankees, but he is being out-managed by everyone he faces in the playoffs. And I'm not just talking about him. The Phillies scouts have obviously done their homework as well.
How do you let Wolf bat for himself after 6 innings and runners on? You're playing the Phillies at home in the playoffs. How do you expect a one or two run lead to hold up against them?
Not one fucking hit and run all series, let alone more aggressive baserunning involving Kemp, Furcal and others (who haven't been getting on anyway). I don't care if they get thrown out half the time. You can't let an opposing pitcher simply forget about the runners and give their full attention to the hitter. That's how you pile it on and get a starter out of there.
And don't even get me started on the strike zone. I realize it's gone both ways, so I'm not even blaming that for the loss (although Martin getting punched out like that was BS). But seriously, aren't these supposed to be six of the best umps in all of baseball? Or did they get picked because [tinfoil hat moment] they don't call the low strikes? It's usually just one shitty ump you sometimes have to deal with during the regular season and he gets rotated to calling strikes behind the plate.
You can't have one strike zone for 162 games and then suddenly eliminate the low strike zone and squeeze pitchers. Maybe MLB is thinking that they'll get more people tuning in if the games are high scoring and a fan's team isn't in it?
How about this MLB? Don't renew TBS's contract. How is it that one half of the playoff teams can only be seen on cable? I mean, think of all the poor children that don't have cable...
And thanks a lot for jinxing the Dodgers and your hope of a Dodgers/Yanks world series. I'm so fucking done with MLB at this point. That screencap posted above is proof positive of their bias on that. Hopefully there'll be a players strike or something next year so I can have a better excuse of washing my hands with baseball rather than simply being a bitter Dodger fan over getting embarassed by a superior Philly team.
I know there's a lot of Yankees fans on this board, but I really hope the Angels can come back and somehow win that series, not just because I hate the Yankees and have followed the Angels a little bit this year, but just so it thoroughly fucks up MLB and the networks carrying this shit.
And if you think THIS post was bad, be thankful I waited until the next day. This is pretty tame considering what I would have posted yesterday. I'm surprised I even still have a monitor to be able to see what I'm typing...

While I will attest that Torre has made mistakes in his career, he wasnt the one who walked Matt Stairs on 4 pitches and then put the winning run on in the form of Carlos Ruiz. The guy is an All Star closer and should be able to get the outs there.

The Dodger offense (or lack thereof) has been the major problem this series. And Torre's decision to go with Kuroda and waiting until game 4 to start with Wolf was his call.
And how do you leave a guy like Jon Garland off the playoff roster this round? He won a game in the World Series and pitched well enough for the Dodgers after being traded to earn a spot over some 25 year old like Elbert.

I was actually OK with that. Leaving him to get shelled after it was clear he didn't have it, not so much.
Oh, and this one's for Leftybearfan. Hope he's able to get some before they're all sold out.

I meant more giving him the start in the first place. But yeah, once the damage was done, he might as well have left him in there.

He earned it by virtue of his last ten starts in the regular season. Also pitched the NL West clinching game, after the Dodger went on a downer, which was a "big" game.

Kershaw deserved to start and it's the damn free passes that are killing the Dodgers. Way to many walks.

Oh, fair enough.
I'll admit that i'm way more of a phillies fan than an actual I pay attention to the whole league type of fan. So, to sum up, I really know dick about the other teams

By the way, my prediction is of a Phillies vs Yankees. World Series. I also predict that I will hate both you and JD for the duration of it.
Been calling it since the start of the season. I really think this series going to be an epic one, and it will end with Evil Empire falling in six games.

Different Sabathia this time!! A much different and better Sabathia.
I'm dying to see Lee vs. CC. That should be an epic battle of former cy young winning Indians.

So...who wants to see some old predictions? :action-sm
Didn't see one of these, but wanted someplace to share my shitty predictions:
AL East
1 - Boston
2 - New York* - Pretty easy wild card winner
3 - Tampa - Nowhere to go but backwards
4 - Toronto
5 - Baltimore
AL Central
1 - Kansas City - Don't get me wrong, it will be with only like 86 wins
2 - Detroit
3 - Chicago
4 - Minnesota
5 - Cleveland
AL West
1 - Anaheim
2 - Texas
3 - Seattle
4 - Oakland - I don't get the hype here. This team looks like a disaster
MVP - I see a big year from Ortiz
CY Young - The only way the Yanks win is if CC dominates, so I'll go with him
Manager of the Year - Trey Hillman
NL East
1 - Phillies. Pains me, but I think they're better with a full season of Blanton and Ibanez over Burrell.
2 - Mets* - Wild card winner
3 - Florida - Everyone loves to hype the Braves, but these guys scare me more.
4 - Atlanta
5 - Washington
NL Central
1 - Cubs
2 - St Louis
3 - Cincinatti
4 - Houston
5 - Milwaukee
6 - Pittsburgh
NL West
1 - San Francisco - Love their pitching except Zito
2 - Los Angeles - Should have kept Manny on a one year leash
3 - Arizona
4 - Colorado
5 - San Diego
MVP - Ryan Howard
CY Young - Johan Santana
Manager of the Year - Jerry Manuel in a weird one. I think the Phils walk away with the division, but just getting to the postseason will be considered a miracle by the media.
Red Sox over Royals
Angels over Yankees
Red Sox over Angels
Phillies over San Francisco
Cubs over New York
Cubs over Phillies
Red Sox over Cubs

Hate to toot my own horn here but this placement was all me. We got this done in 24 hours thanks to David Cook's awesome management team. I really feel this is going to change my career in a good way. Been in the music business for 5 years and this is the biggest and coolest thing to happen for me. Let me know what you guys think.

Very nicely done...I loved seeing Pappelbon grimace after giving up that HR to Hunter.
and if anyone thought that Kruk was even going to entertain the thought of picking the Yanks over the Phils, they're retarded. The Phillies could be riddled with injuries and be 82-82 going up against a 140 win Yankee team and he'd still pick the Phils.

Hate to bust your balls but that was Lester who gave up the home run the home run to Hunter. Did love seeing that as well.
