April Fools, 1998 - WAAf. Boston
First Break
Start the show coming out of ‘Cut You In’. Talk about the new release. A little bit about Alice in Chains. Talk about how the temperature dropped suddenly in the night, and how that was affecting WOW. Opie states that it is about a 1, maybe 1 and a half, 'boob index'. Opie says that there are many requests for the Rx ‘They call my name's Bill’ bit. Opie goes into a song with the first tease about Mayor Menino.
Second break
Boys talk about how the baseball season has started. Anthony figures winter is done. He threw away his ice scraper and made room in his truck for his golf clubs by removing his shovel...figures there will be a blizzard tomorrow. The boys then proceed to make fun of weather-men, how they try to get people to believe there will be snow next week. Opie states that he can’t get into baseball yet; not with basketball and hockey still going on. The boys talk about hardcore Red Sox fans basing the team's whole season on the first few games. Opie then teases more on Menino; says that there was some sort of accident in Northern Florida. He then asks callers for any more info. The boys then play the 'They call my name's Bill' Viagra call (Anthony, doing a voice based on a Mickey Rooney character in a movie called ‘Bill’, calls a pharmacy asking about Viagra. He says he took 5 and his erection won't go away).
Third Break
A lady calls the studio looking for WRKO. The boys, of course, mess with her. She thinks she’s calling for a contest to win money. Opie asks if she knows about the mayor, telling her he died. She doesn't believe him. Opie then explains, calling himself Jim from the news department. The lady doesn’t care; she just wants the money. Opie calls her pathetic. The woman states she 'couldn't care less’ about the mayor and calls Opie a 'ditto head'. Opie calls her a slob. She hangs up.
Calls During Commercial Break
Mary calls (the woman looking for WRKP). Opie calls himself Jim again. Woman won’t listen, just hangs up...again. Opie calls her a slob...again.
Guy calls from NY and says that a friend told him the boys said Pearl Jam is breaking up. Was surprised because he was a bodyguard for them sometimes and hadn’t heard this. Opie and he talk about how Eddie is pissed about sales and Ticketmaster and so decided to break up.
Another caller asking about Menino: Opie says he's dead, and that it should be on the 6 o’clock news.
Andy calls. He states that his parents just got back from Florida. He says that they drove past the Menino accident and describes it. He says that a bridge collapsed on the Mayor’s car.
Fourth Break
Anthony starts the break complaining how the TV will be taken up by stories about Menino. A caller says that he heard Menino was struck by lightning. ‘Crazy Jim’ then comes on the hotline. He says that other stations are reporting that Menino was in multi-car accident involving a tractor trailer and a bridge.
Fifth Break
Opie starts the break by teasing a report from Jacksonville. He then plays some outtakes from Anthony doing spots for the Celtics; busting on him. Anthony blames his mistakes on Opie yelling 'Faster!' the whole time. Opie teases report again going into music.
Sixth Break
Opie says that the Paula Jones case was thrown out and reads a report. The boys then start talking about the case and also the Lewinski case. Phil calls in and asks if the Pearl Jam thing is an April's fool joke. Opie admits that it was, congratulating Phil on calling them out on it. Phil then asks if the Menino accident is. Opie says no way, saying that would be too sick even from them. Roger Grimsley from 'Jacksonville' then calls in from 'WNWZ'. State that Menino was traveling north on I-95 to the airport in a Lincoln Towncar. He was then in a head on collision with a tractor trailer, Roger then states that there was a female companion, maybe of Cuban decent, but there was no word on her condition. The Mayor was pronounced dead at the scene. Roger states that it appears that the tractor trailer jumped the median and hit Menino’s car head on.
Seventh Break
The boys talk about Clinton's age, saying that 15 years ago he was 35. Former Miss America Elizabeth Ward Gracen was 21 at that time…and Chelsea was 2 or 4. Anthony calls Clinton 'Teflon Pres'…’slippery like a lot of girls that leave his office’. They then talk about Viagra before they play the ‘Bill’ but again.
Eighth Break
A woman calls about Menino. Opie says they can’t confirm anything, but they should be getting more info in. The woman says City Hall won't confirm, either will other stations, and hopes that the boys aren't playing a trick on the whole city because that would be ‘sick’. Opie agrees, saying that would be horrible. They then talk about songs recorded live in studio by Damon Johnson from Brother Cane and played 'I Lie in the Bed I Make'.
Ninth Break
A guy calls saying that Channel 4 just said that the boys were lying about Mayor Menino being dead; that it was an April Fool’s joke. O & A crack up. Opie then yells 'Suckers! Got you again!' A woman then calls in saying that O&A were the only ones who were ever able to play an April's Fools joke on her. Opie laughs and says, 'Gotcha!'. Anthony is in total disbelief that people believed them. He then jokes: 'We're your source for news here. The New England news source. Op and Ack News.'
Tenth Break
The boys come in this break with a parody song about a little 'member'. They then talk a little bit about 'Real Rock TV'. A guy then calls in saying that he thought of O&A first when he heard Menino was dead; he couldn’t think of anyone else sick enough to play a joke like that on a whole city. Anthony admits that they were the culprits. Anthony then says the emails coming in are harsh. He reads one from 'A former listener'. The man asks if they (the boys) think for more than 2 minutes before they act. Anthony jokes that it was from Dave Douglas. Woman calls back (the same one from the eighth break) and calls them low and disgusting. Opie says...'Okay...thanks.' Anthony then says, 'I think we may have F'ed up today.' Opie: 'You think?' Ant (after a quick pause): 'Uh, no.'
Eleventh Break
Anthony thanks John and Aaron, who send in a Road Rage test for him. Opie says 'We're going to have to talk about that tomorrow...if we're here tomorrow.' Ant: 'D;oh!' The boys then talk about how ‘Da Da Dave’ was holding his head muttering about all of the phone calls. Opie: 'Well...thanks for listening...' He’s amazed that the phones are so much more active then when they first got there. Opie: 'Well...it's been fun...' thanks the audience, and then the boys sign off.
