Cops warn public of HIV predator
By ROB LAMBERTI, TORONTO SUN
Police have issued a public alert for people who may have had sex with an HIV-positive, bisexual man accused of deliberately infecting others. Among the potential victims is an East York single mom of a preteen son who is awaiting blood test results to determine if she has contracted the potentially fatal disease.
A man has been charged with aggravated assault and sexual assault. He is being held in custody while police search for other unsuspecting victims, both straight and gay.
LEARNED BY ACCIDENT
The East York woman discovered her boyfriend had the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), by accident when she found some documents at her Pape and Mortimer Aves. area home.
Det. Aly Ramji of 54 Division said the woman, 35, confronted the man in February and asked why he didn't tell her about his condition. "His response was it was his intention to infect as many people as possible," Ramji said.
Ramji said he received a call, just hours after making the arrest public, from a frantic man who said he had a relationship with the suspect.
Ramji said the woman walked into the station last month to report the incident.
'DEVASTATED'
"I spoke to her several times and she starts crying every time," he said. "She's a kind person. She's just devastated."
Ramji is urging anyone -- either male or female -- who has had sexual contact with the man to see a doctor and call him at 416-808-5448.
He said he has contacted the city public health board. "By the nature of his lifestyle, I believe there are a lot of victims out there," said Ramji.
Christopher Clarke, 23, is charged with sexual assault, aggravated assault and breaches of probation conditions. He was in court March 5 and was remanded in custody.
Sgt. Jim Muscat said such incidents are rare.
But in 2002, Edgard Monge was sentenced to 10 years in jail after pleading guilty to four charges of aggravated assault for having unprotected sex with four unsuspecting women and one charge of unlawfully causing bodily harm for infecting a baby born by one of the women
