Cops bust hockey hopeful in prostitution crackdown

By TOM GODFREY, TORONTO SUN

A former New York Rangers hockey hopeful is among seven men charged for allegedly confining and forcing three Russian women to work as prostitutes in a massage parlour. Sergei Olympiev, 29, who played for Kitchener Rangers in the '90s before he was drafted by the New York Rangers, is accused of seizing the women's travel documents and cell phones so they wouldn't escape from a Richmond Hill home.

York Regional Police spokesman Kathleen Griffin said the women, aged 19, 20 and 23, were driven to and from Arther's Spa, on Finch Ave. W., where they were forced to provide sexual services and hand over their earnings.

"They had no access to telephones," Griffin said. "Their families back at home were threatened."

She said the suspects were arrested last week but the incident couldn't be publicized because of an ongoing probe.

Police said the women arrived in Canada last fall and claimed refugee status. Their cases are being heard.

Griffin said the women began working for escort services soon after their arrival in Toronto. "They would meet clients in hotels in the GTA and provide sexual services," she said.

Police said the women were allegedly forcibly taken from a hotel last month when they went to meet a customer and driven to the Richmond Hill home.

The arrests stem from York police pressure on massage parlours following last month's slaying of two female spa workers and a male friend in Markham.

Also charged for prostitution-related offences are: Milkin Viatchelan, 35, of Toronto, Pavel Muzhikov, 28, Angelica Cechirca, 31, Alexander Verbon, 29, all of Richmond Hill, and Stanislav Kavalenka, 42, of Vaughan, and Pavel Baoutine, 29, of Scarborough.

Olympiev and two other men appeared for bail hearings yesterday.
