Best pals 'til the end
By JASON TCHIR, TORONTO SUN
Leslie Mitchell likely died trying to rescue Rascal, the little dog who refused to leave his side even after death, the man's family said. "Those two were like 'me and my shadow,' " Mitchell's son, Steve, said. "Police said my dad probably feared the dog would be hit and he chased him. Maybe he was trying to put a leash on him."
Mitchell, 80, was walking the 12-year-old Lhasa Apso on Wednesday afternoon when he was struck and killed instantly by a passenger train at Lorne Park Rd. and Birchview Dr. in Mississauga.
The dog -- which nipped and barked at emergency workers as they tried to get near Mitchell's body -- was in an animal shelter yesterday while the family prepared for today's funeral.
"I have a dog and the two don't get along so we can't keep Rascal with us," Steve, 48, explained
"We're hoping my mom will be well enough to take care of (Rascal) but we'll have to wait and see."
Steve said his dad -- a World War II veteran who escaped from German prison camps twice -- loved fixing things and watching his grandsons Christopher and Cameron play hockey.
And he was well-known in his neighbourhood for his frequent walks with Rascal, who wore a mini-overcoat and booties when it was chilly outside.
Today's service will be held at 2 p.m. at Skinner and Middlebrook funeral home at 128 Lakeshore Rd. E. in Mississauga.
