As I can assume, or have been led to assume, Op and Ant are most likely going to Siruis (with being in NY, and the whole Jeremy thing). But say I buy Sirius and they go to XM. Can you use the same satellite or are they two totaly different protocols? I am talking in general, I am not saying its very liley they will go to XM, but would i have to replace the satellite and the recievers or just the recievers?

Different Satellites:

http://www.boeing.com/defense-space/space/bss/factsheets/702/xmsatradio/xmradio.html

http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/launches/proton_sirius_launch_001130.html

I'm not sure about the recievers, but wondered if one could be hacked to receive the other...

XM supposedly has a better signal, from what I've read. (More "repeaters")

I've actually heard the exact opposite in terms of better signal. XM's 2 satellites are very low to the ground, thus then requiring more repeaters on the ground to carry the signal to different parts of the country. For instance, in Boston, XM has over 30 repeater stations, while Sirius has only 2 or 3 to cover hard to reach places.

Sirius' satellites orbit the same way the Russians satellites did in the 80's when they would spy on the US. Sirius took that idea, of 3 satellites orbiting over the US in a figure 8 motion, much higher than their (Sirius) satellites were before, and then gave XM their much lower orbiting path, which XM uses now.

As far as the original question, it's different satellites and I would think is near impossible to hack into and get the other signal since it's 2 completely different satellites and all, but then again what do I know, I'm not a hacker.

I do, however, know that they are currently developing recievers that would be able to get XM and Sirius. So instead of buying an XM unit, and a Sirius unit, you could recieve both signals from 1 reciever, but would still have to pay for seperate subscriptions.

sirius is the clearer signal.... FBA hit it right oh the head.... xm has more repeaters because their satelites dont do as good a job.... repeater = analog, satelite signal = digital

there is currently a head unit in development that are both xm AND sirius ready to be used on new nissan vehicles only... there is no talk from any aftermarket brand(that i've seen) for such a design.

I had interpreted more repeaters=more coverage, but I defer to you, as you seem to have a better handle on things.

Any idea how close they are to the walkman?

Will it be easier to convert the Sirius (if they go there) broadcasts to a computer to share with people less fortunate that can't afford satellite radio.

sirius satellites=more gooder...

Will people be able to somehow broadcast the signal and stream it online for all of us O+A fans to hear?

Will people be able to somehow broadcast the signal and stream it online for all of us O+A fans to hear?Infinity was always uptight about Syndication Underground, and they got their revenue from commercials. Imagine how Sirius would react considering that their main source of revenue is subscriptions. I think we can expect them to actively seek out and shut down any illegal streams.

Seriously, cowboy up and buy the satellite equipment once they return. The whole initial point of SU was to let people who otherwise wouldn't be able to hear the show (b/c O&A weren't broadcast in their area) could listen. With satellite, anyone who wants to listen anywhere has the ability to do so.

Exactly. SU wasn't about getting something for free that you would otherwise have to pay for, and it shouldn't ever be.

It's not that I can't afford it, but I read the restrictions on the Sirius website about reception, and where I am I'll have problems getting a good signal (in a dorm).

It might do Sirius (or XM) well, to stream O&A's first show on the web for free, to get people hooked, as some (not us) might have forgotten how funny they are....

That's a terrific idea. They should do what baseball does with their Extra Innings package and make it free for the first week. Then, hopefully, more people would go out and buy systems.

i was reading an article on xm vs sirus and they were saying xm has something like 10 million customers while sirus only has 3 million. maybe this isn't true but if it is, wouldn't it make more sense for them to go to xm. if they went sirus then right off the bat they would be shutting out an extra 7 million potential listeners.

those figures are way off. XM has something like 1.4 million and sirius has just over 300,000. sirius projects to have 1 million by the end of the year, and the industry is expected to have from 10-30 million total by the next ten years.

xm has more because A) they got about a 2 year head start on sirius and B) they are offered in far more cars than sirius is currently.

sirius, however, is quickly making their name known. they have more cash in hand, and are willing to spend money to eventually make money. they need 3 million subscribers to break even right now. the fact that they broadcast NBA, NHL and now NFL games exclusively shows how dedicated they are to making their product better, and in my opinion, i think it already is.

i'm guessing one of their main reasons for going to sirius is that sirius is in NYC and XM is in DC.

siriusly, sirius is the better of the two in my opinion.

oh and im pretty sure they own some talk shows of their own. i know they have a gay channel (which is actually the most popular station with truckers, go figure) and they have a mob talk show hosted by big pussy that just started up. as far as i know, thats offered only on sirius.

I know this may be far fetched. But I was reading an article the other day about the new Liberal Radio network...Air America or something...

They are currently on XM and the article said that they will soon be coming to Sirius.

The point is.....is it possible that O&A could be on BOTH XM and Sirius?

This would make the "Coming to Satellite radio" comment from Lil' Jimmys roast make a little more sense?

Sirius has over 400,000 subscribers. XM just cleared 1.8 million. It's public knowledge to stock holders.

Since I just got Sirius (for O&A) so if they go to XM I'll go postal, I have listened to both Sirius and XM and both have great reception. I like Sirius better because of the sports coverage and hope they also sign with MLB. My sound system dealer said his friend in NYC just put in Sirius in Howard Stern's agent car ( Don Buckwald) same agent as O&A. So I'm leaning that O&A will be going to Sirius. If they decide to do both good for me and you and hopefully same drive type slot.

O&A and Stern do not share the same agent. You're friend could be lying to you.

Yeah. Stern's agent is Don Buchwald, O&A's is Robert Eatman.
