April 19, 2004 -- HAS trouble-plagued WNEW - which calls itself Mix 102.7 now - switched formats for the fifth time in a year and kept it quiet to avoid spooking advertisers?


The station "absolutely" denies it, but 'NEW has definitely shifted its focus from adult-contemporary music like Matchbox Twenty, Dido, Train and Sheryl Crow to disco and oldies mainstays like Whitney Houston, Donna Summer, the Bee Gees and Earth, Wind & Fire.

"I wouldn't call it a [format] change - it's a typical evolution of a music format. The target is still women 30 to 44," said Smokey Rivers, program director of the station now dubbed The New Mix 102.7.

"There's certainly more bounce to the station than there was before, but that's the result of music testing - giving the people what they want," Rivers told The Post.

Tom Cuddy, VP/Programming of competitor WPLJ (95.5 FM), insists WNEW not only changed formats, but broke promises to advertisers that it would finally settle on a format and stick with it.

"If a station I was programming changed formats five times in a year, I'd say the same thing [Rivers did]," Cuddy said.

WNEW - New York's lowest-rated FM station for years - abandoned an all-talk format after Opie & Anthony's sex-in-St. Pat's scandal and launched "Blink" last April with massive publicity.

Blink quickly bombed and was followed in short order by Blink II, Christmas music, Mix and - whether it's officially a new format or not - The New Mix.

"The station is programmed for our listeners, not for our competitors . . . who want to paint us into a box," Rivers said. "I expect tremendous results from this."

I read in John Manelli's column in the NYPOST that STINK 102.7( I will never call it mix) has been playing the BEE-GEES and other easy listening music replacing current Easy listening music.. he spectualtes and even discusses it with the PDof WPLJ, that they are chaning their format without anncouning a format change. Of couse SUNNY FOX(the new pd at STINK) claims that they are still going after women listeners ages 30-45. :)

They might as well go country or go RaP like the 4 rap stations CLEAR CHANNEL owns.

I believe Stink has been through 8 format changes since "The Rock of NY". There was rock, then talk, then Top 40 for a few months, then Stink, then post Stink 80's-90's "feel good" music, then Christmas music, then back to the "feel good" crap, and now 70's disco and 80's dance. Thats 8 format changes in about 5 years, or 6 format flips in like 14 months. How unbelieveably pathetic is that? A once legendary rock station on life support. Pull the friggin plug already.

I really think going R&B, Hip Hop, Rap would be the only option they have of salvaging that damaged ship. I would rather see it go back to rock or talk, but I think that African voodoo music would give them more respectable ratings. Then we can all call in and give shoot-outs to our peeps out in the Hamptons. :cdude:

I tend to wonder if the station might go back to talk, but not the kind we were used to....

If (When) O&A and Stern move to satellite, it will hurt the format on FM, and I wonder if Infinity will try to pull some kind of "toned down talk" format on some stations.

It would suck, and bomb, but it's not like they have anything left to lose with WNEW.

Here in Philly.. on WYSP.. after O&A left fat and fatter took their slot.. then I didn't listen to their station for a long time so I don't know what happened until recently and they now have Howard in the mornings and 40 min "Rock Blocks" for the rest of the day. Pretty much the same music everyday.. but they did have Norton DJ a couple times which was pretty cool.. and now he's hosting Babefest.. whatever that is which is comming up soon.. so I guess they aren't all bad now. Now I listen to the Y100 morning show.. then I listen to WYSP for the rest of the day. Philly radio sucks!!!

one time when i was working in fairlawn a poll, new to this cuntry thought he could play stink while we worked.no way! i screamd and rushed over and turned it off.i tried to explain that the station fired my freinds and i diddnt want to give them ratings.i dont think he understood.later that day he turned it on and we argued.i called him a dumb polak.he was 6 something but i was right and he was pollish.
