Rams QB Kurt Warner talking to GiantsBy TOM CANAVAN, AP Sports Writer
May 6, 2004

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The New York Giants (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyg/) are thinking about signing quarterback Kurt Warner (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4541/) if the two-time NFL MVP is released by the St. Louis Rams (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/stl/) in a salary-cap move.

``We've been talking,'' Mark Bartelstein, Warner's agent, said in a telephone interview Thursday.

Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon had no comment. Bartelstein has spoken with six or seven teams about signing Warner since the Rams gave him permission to shop for a deal for the quarterback who led St. Louis to a Super Bowl championship in the 1999 season.

Warner's future in St. Louis became very uncertain this week when the Rams signed Marc Bulger (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5197/) to a four-year contract.

It's unlikely Warner will take a pay cut to stay with the Rams, and it's even more unlikely he will enjoy being Bulger's backup again.

Coming to the Giants, however, also would pose questions.

New York seemingly wants to start Eli Manning (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6760/), the top pick last month in the NFL draft. The Giants cut Kerry Collins last week, taking $8.95 million off the team's salary cap this season.

``We haven't said we're going to New York,'' Bartelstein said. ``I don't think they have decided on what is the best way to develop Manning.''

Bartelstein said Warner would be willing to sign a one-year contract, acknowledging this is not an easy time for veterans to get multiyear deals.

``Kurt wants to start and play and have a great season,'' said Bartelstein, who would not identify the other teams interested in Warner. Warner lost his starting job to Bulger after fumbling six times in a season-opening loss to the Giants. He had three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in an injury-plagued 2002. The Giants recently courted veteran quarterback Neil O'Donnell as a possible backup and mentor to Manning, whom they acquired in trade with San Diego. But the 14-year veteran said he planned to retire.

I hope it doesn't happen. I like Warner.

Reports from camp today said Manning was awful, but I hope they don't get Warner either.

Why not? Who better to teach ELI than KURT WARNER.. He isn't going to steal the job unless MANNING can't throw crap.. Warner would be here what 2 or 3 years max? How long before the JETS became PENNINGTON'S TEAM? 3 seasons, this would be a perfect situation. The team isn't going to be that good next season anyway. Plus training camp really doesn't begin for another few months. :)

Warner is much better than Vinnie or O'Donnell(who already said no) I mean what let JESSIE PALMER teach him?

Maybe they should call JIM HARBAUGH he was a backup for 20 years. :)

Mike Martz said, if he thought Warner would be healthy he would have signed him for next year. I agree, he could be a great mentor, or a big drawback.

Excuse me, but since when is this Arena football guy "Kurt Warner" such a profound quarterback? He had unbelievable receivers to throw to in St. Louis. I really do not think he is a Troy Aikman, Dan Marino, or even a Vinny Testaverde for that matter. He had a few good seasons. He is NO Hall of Famer by any stretch. What can he teach Eli? How to have three or four good seasons in the NFL?

EDIT: Now, do not get me wrong, I could be wrong, and have been on occasion. I'd take him, but I do not think much of him.

ummm what SLOUCHES did TROY AIKMEN have? Most of his weapons are in or should be in the NFL Hall of FAME. And if we are going to say the receivers and backs make the QB what about JOE MONTANA? He had Jerry RICE and others with him for all those years.
