Competition rocks!
Yahoo mail's free e-mail just increased their storage to 100MB from 5MB of storage. Those using the pay service (@$20/yr) get 2GB of storage, and NO ADDS!!!
Also, they've freed up something like a million e-mail addresses that were not being used.
Thanks Google!

It was a nice surprise. I was running at 85% capacity, now I'm at 5%. But isn't google offering 1GB of email storage with its free email?

Yes, but they use software to go through your mail, and target adds to you based on the information in your mail. For example, if you mentioned something about buying a new car, you would receive targeted adds from local car dealerships with adds on their cars, etc.
Also, keeping 2GB worth of "e-mail" is crazy in itself. That's probably at least a few hundred thousand e-mails! And I pay for the yahoo service, as I have multiple domains and e-mail accounts that I manage out of Yahoo. And the whole POP3 access... now with no adds!

I mad the mistake of using my yahoo e-mail awhile back for something I don't even remember what it was....anyway next thing you know porn and stiffy e-mails out the ass.....I used spam filter they have ....It took like a month but believe it or not Im down to 1 or 2 emails a week of that shit....
Each email you get mark as spam make sure your settings block the address. they will end up in bulkmail.

Also, Yahoo allows you to create "temportay" e-mail addresses for providing to whomever you want. Once the spam becomes too much, you can shut off that e-mail address.

There are multiple things happening today. First, there seems to be some sort of DOS attach hitting some of the major sites.
Second, with this news, I'm sure a LOT more people are hitting Yahoo mail today to take a look at what's new, to register for new accounts, etc.
I'm actually amazed its been up as much as it has been, knowing the types of spikes the site could get.
Give it a week - it will be back to "normal.":clap9:
i'll have to check it out...

The spam filter works alright.
People should have severaly email addies. One for serious corespondence and the other for junk. If you are lazy just use dogeit.com .

E-mail wars heat up as Microsoft's Hotmail expands free capacity
Thu Jun 24, 1:12 PM ET Add Business - AFP to My Yahoo!
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The e-mail wars heated up as Microsoft offered a massive new storage capacity for its free Hotmail customers, moving ahead of Yahoo as the two rivals look to head off a challenge from Google.
Microsoft said it would offer its free MSN Hotmail customers in "multiple markets" 250 megabytes of storage, up from 2.5 megabytes. That is more than double the 100 megabytes offered for free by Yahoo, which recently boosted its capacity.
Both Microsoft and Yahoo are working to fend off a challenge from Google, which plans to offer free e-mail accounts with a full gigabyte of storage capacity, representing some 500,000 pages.
Microsoft said it would start making upgrades for its 170 million customers worldwide, along with free anti-virus scanning of incoming e-mails, in early July. The new capacity limits take effect "later this summer."
Separately, Ask Jeeves, which operates several Internet portals, said Thursday it would offer users 125 megabytes of free e-mail storage on its My Way, Excite and iWon portals starting in September.
Most free Web-based e-mails had been limited to two to four megabytes, requiring users to delete old messages to stay within the limits. The newer capacities will mean most users will rarely, if ever, have to clean out their old e-mail messages.
The moves come as Google, which is in the process of offering stock to the public, prepares a free e-mail service with an unprecedented one gigabyte of storage. The Google plan has drawn criticism from privacy activists, however, because it will target advertising to users based on the content of e-mails.
The battle for free e-mail highlights the falling cost of storage capacity but also a rush to direct customers to portals and search services, which can generate revenue.
David Hallerman of the research firm eMarketer said Microsoft, Yahoo and others are trying to keep their users from defecting to Google to be able to pitch advertising and other services.
"With the cost of memory being what it is, (the expansion) is not that high a cost," Hallerman said.
"They were pushed into this move by Google. This is a way to keep people on their site. This is the razor to sell the razor blades."
Hallerman said that free e-mail offers an opportunity for the provider to target ads based on demographics and registration information even without the controversial content analysis that Google plans to offer.
"They know your basic background" from registration information, he said. "They might know you are a young parent. And they know, by using 'cookies' when you visit other parts of the site, if you look at news or stocks."
Despite the new free offerings from Yahoo and Microsoft, Hallerman said Google is likely to be able to attract plenty of users if it wants to create a portal with e-mail and other services.
"Google is a top brand, and it will be attracting customers on the basis of that," he said.

What is better about G-mail? Just curious.
First off, a Gig of mail storage.
Second, all of your mail with each person is grouped and you can read all of the sent and recieved messages at the same time.
Third, you can search all of your e-mail for key words.
Fourth, you don't have to enter an address for anyone who has sent you an e-mail.
That's what I picked up in the 2 days of having it.
