Always ready with a string of jokes and a warm smile, Daniel M. Ruggiero was the life of the party and the person people called during their times of need, his loved ones said.
"There was never a dull moment when Danny was around," said Mr. Ruggiero's sister, Cindi Ann Mitchell, 34, of Clark. "Whenever anyone needed him, he was there," she said, fighting back tears.
A municipal employee with the Belleville Public Works Department for the last 18 months, Mr. Ruggiero, 37, of Nutley, died Monday at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville after falling off a truck during a morning garbage collection, police said.
The medical examiner is still determining whether Mr. Ruggiero's death was caused by the fall or a previous medical condition. He may have suffered a heart attack, Police Chief Joseph Rotonda said.
Loved ones said Mr. Ruggiero enjoyed the simple things in life, like spending time with his family and friends.
"He and his friends would get together at the Franklin Steakhouse in Nutley," Mitchell said. "He didn't drink, so he would always volunteer to be the designated driver."
Mitchell said the death of her brother leaves a huge void that no one will ever be able to fill.
"I'm going to miss him -- just knowing he would always be there to help me and lean on," she said.
Mitchell said her big brother kept a smile even when he was down.
"Even when he was upset, he put on a happy face, because he wanted to be strong for everyone else," she said.
Sharing her sentiment, good friend Joseph Carissimo, 36, of Belleville, a computer programmer, said Mr. Ruggiero had the gift of making everyone feel comfortable.
"When he would drive up to visit me at college, that was a different crowd than what we were used to, but they loved him," said Carissimo, who met Mr. Ruggiero in high school before attending Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island.
Carissimo also said his friend enjoyed listening to all types of music.
"If there was an oldies song on the radio, everyone knew they could call Danny to find out who it was written and performed by," he said.
Loved ones said they still can't believe Mr. Ruggiero is gone.
"This just feels like a horrible dream," Carissimo said, as he cried. "To lose somebody like him, I don't think I'll ever get over something like this, he was a super-special person."
Carissimo also said what he would miss most was Mr. Ruggiero's phone calls and great advice.
"He was a true friend in every sense of the word," he said.
Born and raised in Belleville, Mr. Ruggiero attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, Rutherford. An avid sports fan, he was a member of the Belleville Varsity Club and coached the Special Olympics.
In addition to his sister, Cindi, he is survived by his parents, Rosemarie and Daniel Ruggiero Jr., of Nutley; grandmother, Rose Merlucci, of Union; and a niece and nephew.
A Mass for Mr. Ruggiero will be offered at 9:30 a.m. today at Holy Family Church, Nutley. Arrangements are by the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 267 Centre St., Nutley. Interment will be today at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair.
