Hey,

I have an old lap top that I'm looking to dispose of. I would concider selling on ebay, but no matter how well you flush out a system, someone could get your personal info off there.

What's the best way to dispose of it? The portion of the mother board that operates the cd rom is fried. Do i just take a hammer to it or do i drop it in the dump.

I like the hammer idea, myself.

I never trash can a pc without destroying the hard drive first.

Use the hammer.......hammer! Let's out a little frustration that the thing fried and you destroy all personal info (read prOn).

Sell it without the hard drive. No personal info that way...

EDIT: A more attractive option is using a free program like this one (http://www.download.com/Active-Kill-Disk-Hard-Drive-Eraser/3000-2092-10188745.html?tag=lst-0-1) to wipe the drive clean with no chance of any data recovery.

the cdrom is fried and i cant reset the network info without it. The hard drive isnt removable. I think sledge hammer time and then to the dump it goes.

I'd say pack it with gun powder, head to a remote location, and toss matches at it until something cool happens.

If it's a popular model, you may want to try selling the display on eBay...
And make sure you hammer on the hard drive until it's almost liquid.

IF you are really paranoid about info on the hard drive and want to destroy it.. just open the hard drive case up and remove the disks... They make good mirrors except for the hole in the middle.

Or if you want to sell the hard drive off.. use a wiping program that is DEFENSE DEPT. rated.. it should wipe the drive 9 times that will ensure that no data is left on the drive at all... It will also take a few hours to complete..
