Amazon Exclusive Vendor For Portable Media Center Pre-Orders

By TechWeb News

Microsoft said Thursday that online retailer Amazon.com will be the sole shopping spot for customers placing pre-orders for Portable Media Center devices, the audio- and video-playing hardware the Redmond, Wash.-based developer is pushing as an answer to Apple's iPod.

The first two models of Portable Media Center are manufactured by Samsung and Creative Labs. Both Samsung's YH-999 and Creative Labs' Zen are 20GB devices that cost $500. They can be pre-ordered from Amazon's Web site. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/feature/-/534383/ref%3Dms%5Fpmc/103-3861006-0203869

The Samsung YH-999 will be available in September, while Creative Labs' player will ship in August.

Microsoft's been trying to get consumer electronic device makers to build and sell Portable Media Centers since 2003. The devices rely on the Windows Mobile operating system, and connect to Windows XP PCs for retrieving video and audio content. A Windows PC equipped with a TV tuner card, for instance, can be used to capture television programs, then transfer them to the portable.

Microsoft also announced a deal with Major League Baseball that will provide video of condensed and full-length games -- by subscription or as pay-per-view -- to Portable Media Center users.
