My Compaq Presario 2500 notebook keeps overheating and shutsdown in the middle of whatever i'm doing. Could i be doing something wrong and is there anything i can do to cool it down?

Check the catalogs for a something called "cool Pad" or "podium pad". This will lift the laptop from the desk surfact to allow air to flow under it to keep it cooler.

Personally, I stick a few small objects at the corners of my laptop to allow air to flow under it. When it's warm, I have a fan on too.

the fans could have failed... maybe the heat sink too...

Kind of a stupid question, but how long do you let it run without shutting down??

I use a cool pad with my notebook, and got one for my sister as well. They do help quite a bit. There is a chance that the notebook's own chassis/CPU fan could have failed, if it has one.

BTW, I had a customer put their laptop IN THE FREEZER once because they inadvertently left it on when they put it in their notebook bag. Well, it was ripping hot when she discovered this 2 hours later. So the logical thing to do, as all of us know, :icon_roll was to put it in the freezer.

Unfortunatly this customer has a husband who knew his wife was dumb when he married her. Now he makes $X at his high stress job so when his wife spills some white zanfandel on the laptop and shorts it out it is now your fault it doesn't work because you made a quick fifty removing Klez and installing Norton 3 months ago.

.... back to work...

Oh yes, where were we... So this big asshole comes in and is all like "you broke this" and I'm all like "your wife spilled wine inside" and he's all like "yeah right my wife doesn't have a drinking problem" and I'm like "I didn't say nothing 'bout that" and he's all like "oh, ah how much will it cost to fix it...zzzzzzzzzz

Actually, this chick didn't have a husband. I believe her stupidity reached heights that it actually worked as a repellent.

Oh boy. There's one that I have to deal with every 6 months or so because she's mishandled her used laptop, hinge broken, CD drive missing its cover, HDD dead, etc.

A while ago she had me look for a CDRW/DVD for a Celeron 300 laptop that she bought used. I told her before I took the minimum fee that I did not believe it was possible.

By the way, her job title as per her business card that she was far too happy to give me, is Cyber Yenta.

People are such a-holes with their laptops.. Spilling coffee or SODA in the keyboard and then wondering why I have to charge them $3 grand for parts for a $1500 laptop they bought 3 years ago.

Here is a site I have bought from in the past. They sell a couple of Laptop coolers.

Has the overheating just started or was like this since you bought it? I know the 700us series and 900us series COMPAQ's were mini HOTTER THAN HELL ovens from the factory.. Compaq knew their design sucked ass and did nothing about it. That was before HP bought them.
