as posted on foundry (http://www.foundrymusic.com/shop/displayreview.cfm?id=1044)

This is one review I've been having a tough time writing simply because it's kinda tough to put in to words. Yeah I know.... you either like a game or you don't, then you write about it. In this case, I like the game even though it's not 100% what I expected.

The "Driver" series of games have always been exciting trend setting games. There was never a comparison between the latest Driver and any other game. However, since GTA Vice City (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000696CZ/foundrymusic), it's tough not to expect more out of a newer game.... and that's what i expected. At the very least, I expected this game to get me as excited as the original Driver for PS1.

Unlike GTA (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000696CZ/foundrymusic), in DRIV3R (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000TSR4C/foundrymusic) you play the role of a cop on an undercover mission trying to expose the bad guys. You travel from Miami to France to Istanbul, Turkey. They did a fantastic job recreating these cities right down to famous landmarks and specific roads. The controls(though they are a bitch to get used to) give you a great feel for the car as well as the hills and tight turns making it probably the most precise driving game I ever played.

I was unhappy with the way the the game play went on. The game goes from one mission to the next with no choices on which mission you'd like to do next. I always liked the "choose your outcome" feel like in the original "Driver" and "Vice City". After completing a mission, you're taken back to your "home" and given your next mission immediately. Some of the missions can get very frustrating(I've spent a full weekend trying to complete one 3 minute mission over and again). The game does not lack in the "challenging" department.

Though there was a bit of frustration involved, the game was entertaining as hell to play. It's a great game with solid car chases with precision controls, a bit of shooting and a small sense of satisfaction after completing each level. Definitely worth playing as long as you're not expecting it to be like Vice City (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000696CZ/foundrymusic) but look at it for what it is... a fast-paced driving game.
