NEW YORK -- The Yankees may be ready to drop a bombshell on the Bronx.

The New York Yankees baseball club will announce soon that it plans to build a new ballpark across the street from the current Yankee stadium, which would be torn down, according to Crain's New York Web site.

Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion, Jr., tells NewsChannel 4 the deal is not yet 100 percent complete on City Hall's end of things, but that he expects an announcement in mid-August.

A spokesman for Mayor Mike Bloomberg reassured taxpayers Thursday that they won't be paying for the new stadium, saying it will have to be built completely with private money. And if there is accompanying city investment in infrastructure, it would have to pay for itself so "it wouldn’t cost taxpayers a dime."

I had goosebumps when I heard this.WTF???You can't destroy Yankee Stadium!!I can see my dad sitting next to the Babe, and saying Fuck this.I'm not a big baseball fan.But the greatest site is driving up Jerome Ave. for a night time game and just see that stadium just from the outside. So white and bright.Last time I was there was Joe DiMaggio day.Paul Simon, all 5'4" of him came out and sang "Mrs. Robinson".The only other stadium that gave me goosebumps was Joe Robbie.

It's a different stadium now..when they redid it in 75..they took all the character out..plus changing the outfield depths..

The first time I was there was 1971.Mid June.My dad brought me to my first Yankee game.My seat had a steel pillar behind me.I just went to go lean back in my my chair.. and BAM.I hit it.I had a knot in my head and bleeding. Then it was really hot out, I starting feeling dizzy. My dad figured he would get me something to eat.Of course a hot dog and a soda.I woke up the next day with a 104* fever.I ended up with mono.I was sick all the way till the first day of school in Sept.My first experience at Yankee StadiuTo me, it's like look let's get rid of heaven, and call it something else...And trust me you, I'm not an avid fan like I use to be.My best g/f and I use to go to home games 3-4 games a week. And go to Spring training.Remember Shane Rawley?

Now you understand how I felt when I heard they were going to knock down Vet Stadium here. I was appalled, and still am kinda bent about it. I have not been to the new ballpark yet. I wanted to go before, but the desire has kinda died.

I can only hope Steinbrenner is still in the stadium when they destroy it. Besides, it's no Wrigley Field anyway.

it's true that yank-me stadium has history.... it's also true that it's old

i hate the yanks.... but a world class team deserves a world class stadium that can make as much money as possible

look... the way i see it, the history of a stadium doesnt mean shit. if you keep it for the sake of history, you'll still be using the out of date facility a hundred years from now.

would you continue to live in a shack if you hit the lotto because your freinds enjoyed hanging out in your little shack? no... you would find a better home. the history stays with you.... the building is meaningless

I'd agree about keeping it for the history except I toured the new Boston something or other stadium (for football?) and it was state of the art. The facilities were the most beautiful I've ever seen and had a much better area for the players to go after the game and to gear up for the next one. With that in mind, old is old and new is better. I dislike the Yankees, but I agree with robification. "A world class team deserves a world class stadium"

Well said, Rob. I was resistant to the change when they tore the Vet down.
But now that I have been to the new park, it was worth the change.
Better seating and better concessions are very nice indeed.

well.... you do have a point wiff.... the sponsored stadiums are very annoying

but i do feel it's time for a new stadium. also throw in to the mix that a good player will prefer a stadium that makes him feel more comfortable

history itself is meaningless and silly to hold on to if it means you cant progress because you're living in the past. doesnt it make you sick that a crappy city like houston(with the retarded center feild mini-golf looking hill) has the potential to make more money than yankee stadium..... the yankees are the one team that EVERY person around the world knows of..... a stadium most dream of one day visiting. i've had relatives from europe who know nothing about baseball beg me to take them there just so they can say "i've been there". i see no reason why the most prestigious ball club in the MLB shouldnt have the most amazing stadium

i despise steinbrenner, but he's no idiot. he's actually a wise bussiness man. i'm confident the new yankee stadium will be breathtaking in every aspect while still trying to preserve some of the nostalgia and history of yankee teams from the past.

I'll say first - I'm a yankee fan.

The idea of a new stadium is somewhat sacreligious. In a way. All of the history that has happened there seemingly erased. That's just wrong.

From what I've heard, the new stadium would be funded by new york state and city. Along with a big chunk from George. As far as I know there wouldn't be corporate sposorship. (yay)

I also can see the need for a new place with more modern everything and how it would simply be a technological step forward.

They say old Yankee stadium wouldn't be torn down. What would be there I don't know. As far as location, it would be almost across the street from the present place.

It seems both good and bad. Even if the original were torn down, history is history. People still remember places like Gettysburg and Pearl Harbor and they aren't the same anymore. Bottom line is, it's the memories that count.

My rant is now over.

As far as I'm concerned, they ruined the stadium on the last remake in 75. It's not the same park that all the great Yankees played on, even the dirt is different. I think they need a new facility, and the plans sound pretty cool ..plus then maybe my Mets will get a new stadium also. :gt:

i dont get how you can destroy the history by destroying a building

the ottoman empire doesnt exist anymore, but the history is still there
