Wednesday September 29, 6:13 pm ET
WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XM Satellite Radio, the nation's leading provider of satellite radio, is launching "XM Nation: Operation Helping Hand," a major effort to help support the American Red Cross disaster relief in the wake of four devastating hurricanes that have struck the U.S. in the last seven weeks.

In the aftermath of Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne, the Red Cross is mobilizing the largest feeding, sheltering and human resources deployment effort in response to a natural disaster in its history. The Disaster Relief Fund allows the Red Cross to provide emergency services to the victims of all types of disasters. Prior to these massive hurricanes, the Disaster Relief Fund had been almost entirely depleted by a large number of small but costly disasters. Following the hurricanes, this fund is strained more than any time in recent history.
XM is broadcasting on-air appeals to rally its millions of listeners nationwide to make contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund through XM's Operation Helping Hand web site at http://www.xmradio.com/helpinghand (http://www.xmradio.com/helpinghand) or by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW (press "2" to participate in Helping Hand).
XM's effort will culminate with a fund-raising drive to be broadcast on XM Live (XM Channel 200) October 8 and 9. Artists and XM talent supporting the effort include Quincy Jones, Phil Collins, Willie Nelson, Bob Edwards, and talk radio duo Opie and Anthony. The show will also feature highlights of concerts recorded at the XM Performance Theater in Washington, D.C. Several other XM channels will urge listeners to make donations during the broadcast for a total of 36 hours of programming on XM.
"We are calling on the XM Nation to help the Red Cross provide relief for the thousands of people whose lives were impacted by the recent hurricanes," said Hugh Panero, President and CEO of XM Satellite Radio. "The recovery effort is going to take months and cost many millions of dollars, and the Red Cross deserves all the help it can get."
"We appreciate XM's endeavor to help the Red Cross as we embark on this historic relief effort following this devastating series of hurricanes," said Joe Becker, Vice President of Response for the American Red Cross. "We know that the people at XM and XM fans are incredibly passionate people who care about their community whether across the street or across the country, and we're grateful for their support."
On September 10, XM launched the XM Emergency Alert channel (XM Channel 247), which delivers round-the-clock information about weather emergencies, natural disasters, and other hazardous incidents to listeners across the country. During Hurricanes Ivan and Jeanne, XM Emergency Alert aired survival information such as evacuation routes, shelter locations, health and medical information, and updated weather information for impacted areas from the Weather Channel. XM also offers 21 channels devoted to weather and traffic conditions in 21 specific metropolitan areas 24 hours a day.
nice! they're already becoming more and more involved into the XM family :)
