XM Satellite Radio Launches 'XM Nation: Operation Helping Hand' to Support Red Cross in Wake of Hurricane Devastation
Wednesday September 29, 6:13 pm ET

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XM Satellite Radio, the nation's leading provider of satellite radio, is launching "XM Nation: Operation Helping Hand," a major effort to help support the American Red Cross disaster relief in the wake of four devastating hurricanes that have struck the U.S. in the last seven weeks.

In the aftermath of Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne, the Red Cross is mobilizing the largest feeding, sheltering and human resources deployment effort in response to a natural disaster in its history. The Disaster Relief Fund allows the Red Cross to provide emergency services to the victims of all types of disasters. Prior to these massive hurricanes, the Disaster Relief Fund had been almost entirely depleted by a large number of small but costly disasters. Following the hurricanes, this fund is strained more than any time in recent history.

XM is broadcasting on-air appeals to rally its millions of listeners nationwide to make contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund through XM's Operation Helping Hand web site at http://www.xmradio.com/helpinghand (http://www.xmradio.com/helpinghand) or by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW (press "2" to participate in Helping Hand).

XM's effort will culminate with a fund-raising drive to be broadcast on XM Live (XM Channel 200) October 8 and 9. Artists and XM talent supporting the effort include Quincy Jones, Phil Collins, Willie Nelson, Bob Edwards, and talk radio duo Opie and Anthony. The show will also feature highlights of concerts recorded at the XM Performance Theater in Washington, D.C. Several other XM channels will urge listeners to make donations during the broadcast for a total of 36 hours of programming on XM.

"We are calling on the XM Nation to help the Red Cross provide relief for the thousands of people whose lives were impacted by the recent hurricanes," said Hugh Panero, President and CEO of XM Satellite Radio. "The recovery effort is going to take months and cost many millions of dollars, and the Red Cross deserves all the help it can get."

"We appreciate XM's endeavor to help the Red Cross as we embark on this historic relief effort following this devastating series of hurricanes," said Joe Becker, Vice President of Response for the American Red Cross. "We know that the people at XM and XM fans are incredibly passionate people who care about their community whether across the street or across the country, and we're grateful for their support."

On September 10, XM launched the XM Emergency Alert channel (XM Channel 247), which delivers round-the-clock information about weather emergencies, natural disasters, and other hazardous incidents to listeners across the country. During Hurricanes Ivan and Jeanne, XM Emergency Alert aired survival information such as evacuation routes, shelter locations, health and medical information, and updated weather information for impacted areas from the Weather Channel. XM also offers 21 channels devoted to weather and traffic conditions in 21 specific metropolitan areas 24 hours a day.

For this thing to work for both sides, O&A are going to have to become THE face and voice of XM. Looks like they're off to a good start, and for a good cause.

What it turns out to be, basicall, is a free preview of O&A to people who happen to be tuning in at that time to Channel 200. It'll be interesting to see if the show is simulcast in the mornings to 200, or if it's later on in the day.

I can't wait to hear O&A put on a sensitive callout to people who are listening to donate money. It will be so awkward. I wonder how long they can keep it up.

Only bummer is since it's gonna be a free preview type deal,
they will have to be a little careful about what they do.
Don't want to offend the soccer moms right from the start.:icon_evil

Okay, as I sit here in Hurricane ravished Melbourne, Fl. I say screw the fund raising event. What we need here in Florida is a moral raising event. We need Opie and Anthony to come to Florida and raise the spirits of us, as moral is probably at an all time low. Money is nice but I would rather they make a personal appearance instead. I keep hearing about all the great appearnce in Philly, Ny and Boston, what about Florida?

Ditto! You beat me to it. I was gonna say if the Hurricane relief would include O&A here in Central Florida that would be better! I voted for the tour to come here, yet they only hit northeast locations. I'm tired of being left out of all the good stuff. I'm moving back to Pennsylvania.

Florida has been hammered bad this year. Yes, you guys could use a morale booster or two.

However, I don't think that the ratings from their previous show indicate huge ratings in that market to warrant a personal appearance.

Maybe the NASCAR channel would be a better choice.

I don't think O & A will have a problem dealing with a serious situation like this. They did very well the week after 9/11.

I think Florida is an untouched gold mine, 3/4 of the people I meet here aren't from here. Everyone is from the Northeast, all their old markets (myself included). They just need to get the word out that they are coming and we will be there. It was hinted to me that they would come to Fl. eventually, but not till after the show has gotten off and running, but with the events here in Fl. what better time to come do some selfless self promotion.

By the way Whipper only part of the state sank the rest blew away!

The traffic around here sucks! I-4 is ridiculous. I barely made it to the Incubus show in Orlando last night. I'd love to see the boys at the House of Blues....... 24 is right. 90% of the people I know and work with are from the Northeast, Chicago area or California. No one is from Florida. Oh and Whip, you got a great sigpic!
