Opie said at the begining of the show that they have listeners totaling the city of Des Moines, Iowa.
I know it was probably a joke of some sort, but I actually looked up to see what the population of Des Moines really is (i suck i know).
" With a City population approaching 200,000 and a metro population of nearly 500,000, Des Moines offers some of the nation's best schools, superb public services, and friendly, caring neighborhoods."
So in theory, they could have between 150K to 500K subs. Not bad for a show starting out fresh!

haha I looked it up too....I found it quoted around 250,000 people. Either way this represents a significant percentage of XM's total subscribers who have signed up for O&A.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, at last count, Des Moines, Iowa has 198,682 people living in it.
That means O&A have infected only 7.9 percent of the XM Nation.
Considering there are no sponsers, that means the show's intake of cash for this month would be approximately $395,377.18 if they were levying the fee for October.

Fellas,
I spoke with a Xm 'customer care' whatevs last nite to activate a friends Roady2 on my account, BS'd about O&A and how busy they must be. He mentioned that he never heard of them before all this, but would definatly listen in. Also asked about how many people they signed up in the last month or so, he mentioned that they have a target of 25k before X mas this year and last he heard they were at about 10k. Not quite the city of Des Moines, but a great start that can only get better.
Cheers,
Jim

Yeah, I think it's gonna pick up at XMas. I know people who want XM, but can't afford the big set up costs right now.

Well, they got my ass on the hook, that's for sure. :icon_lol:
I wonder if they'll do any kind of TV advertising for the show?

Opie did equate things to a "College Station" this morning, so I guess 10K sounds about right. I still would have thought the number would have been much higher.

With all the inside people here on this board, you'd think we'd have an accurate number by now.
Of course, it could be a secret... they don't want to scare off Hoo Hoo just yet. (Make the fucker sweat a little first!)

10 k sounds right in the ballpark. As popular as we think wackbag is, there's less than 5,000 members, so even if every stinkin' one of us had an XM, that doesn't amount to a lot. They're just starting to get national attention for their return now. It is going to be a long, slow build, that's for sure. And they won't be releasing too many subscription numbers. Hoo Hoo would have a field day with any number less than a million, especially after the way they bashed him this am.

Actually, wackbag broke 5000 - 5367 now! Headed for a 10% increase in members today :)
Wow, that's awesome.
The first caller got a plug in for wackbag, which kicked ass, even though they goofed on him for having nothing else to say. How many members can this thing hold?

Actually, Des Moines has more than 500k people...there are a ton of cities around it. I'd say Metro Des Moines has that many...but all in all, there's about 1.2 million people that live in and around there....speaking as O&A's only Iowa listener.

i am suprised with the amount of subs. i would definately think that it broke the 100,000 mark especially hearing how many people signed up this quarter. if i am not mistaking i thought that it wa around 250,000 which was a huge jump in subs from the quarter before. there has to be a way to find out or maybe (as stated before) they are waiting a few weeks so the word can get out. any ways op, ant and lil jim rocked the boat and they will continue till they are at the top. i remember when they first started and how they brought the worst ny radio station to the top of the charts and it will soon happen again because they always win in the end

XM reported an increase in subscriptions totalling 415,000 in the 3rd quarter (which would have ended 9/04). I can not see how it is possible that O&A only have about 10K listeners. It doesn't add up.

Noooooo...I'm just saying that Metro Des Moines probably has that many...but all the outlying towns (West/East Des Moines, Urbandale, Clive, etc.) make the population a lot higher. Basically D.M. overtook all these other towns and it's like one huge town. Anywho, I'm just trying to say there's probably more than 300k people in Des Moines...just like we'll probably never know how many people have sub'd to the show.

i definately agree i read the same thing. what are the odds that once O&A mentioned they will be going to xm that the subs were increasing at a higher rate then normal. i am sure the number is a lot more then 10,000.
O&A always win in the end

Actually, the sub-count was considered disappointing by many investers. Even before the O&A announcement, those in the yahoo financial groups and xm411 were predicting higher subcounts for this quarter.
So, I'd say, it's quite good odds that the subs would have increased at this rate with O&A only drawing 10k.
We need to work harder at spreading the virus.

The investors were expecting a proposed amount of 435K. Hitting 95% of your goal is not too shabby. Also, I think what is need is a month to month breakdown on subscribers. For instance, what was the count for July '04 and what was the count for Aug '04 after O&A were officially announced.
Then compare those numbers to Sept '04. You should see a drastic increase between those months. It should be related to O&A. I highly doubt that all those subs were for Bob Edwards.

O&A is what XM considers 'niche programming'. (Males 18-49) Success for them in the long term is going to be based on what percentage of XM listeners pay the extra $2 a month. Since males 18-49 are probably the leading users for satellite radio, them signing O&A makes a lot of sense. I don't know what O&A's ratings were, but let's just say that they got an average 5% share overall in their 19 markets. If they hit the same 5% at XM that would be 125,000 subscribers. I think that is a very realistic and attainable goal for year 1. With that in mind, the only people that even know who they are and that they're back are the diehards like all of us, so 10,000 seems like a great number for a show that's only 2 days old...

:action-sm Welcome back, Rob!
You're arguing with the U.S. Census bureau, saying they're 300k off?
I don't think that is what they intended. The SMSA is 500-503 thousand people. We have no idea whether Opie was talking census numbers, SMSA numbers or just talking out of his ass.
Actually, the sub-count was considered disappointing by many investers. Even before the O&A announcement, those in the yahoo financial groups and xm411 were predicting higher subcounts for this quarter.

We need to work harder at spreading the virus.
But the investors on Yahoo and other boards frankly don't matter to ANY company. The investors that matter are the large institutions, mutual funds, insurance comapanies, banks, etc. In other words, the ones that move stock prices on large volume. There is no reason any of those guys would waste their time on Yahoo financial boards.
You could sell all the shares from all the people on the XM Yahoo board and it wouldn't have any significant effect on the movement of the stock compared to one insurance company or fund selling their shares.
Any way ... you are right that we need to work harder at spreading the virus.
