As I mentioned in the Half-Life 2 thread, I'm upgrading my video card. But I also need to upgrade my memory. One question: is it possible (or recommended) to upgrade both at once, or should one be done first?

I would do one at a time.
That way if there is a conflict, you will know where the problem is.

Any idea which one it would be better to install first? Or does it matter?

Post your system specs and what video card you are thinking of getting and someone here will comment on it.
Personally I would install the RAM first and run the machine for w week to see if there are any problems. Don't bother buying faster RAM than your motherboard will support.
system restore, scan disk, defrag, RAM, video card, windowsupdate, firmware update, software.

If you're planning on upgrading in order to play games, i'd say the video card would be the quickest way to improve game play. Depending on your specs though, that may not be the bottleneck. More RAM, (not necessarily faster RAM) will help too.
Just upgraded to an Athlon 64 3200+, OCZ PC3500 RAM, and an EVGA GeForce 6800 GT. This system is unbelievable. Check www.newegg.com if you're looking for a great place to buy parts. Awesome prices and the service is best there is. They also have product reviews by customers which is helpful if you're not sure what you might like. Very helpful.
