KABUL: Interim president Hamid Karazi was declared the official winner of Afghanistan’s first-ever presidential election, spokesman for the UN-Afghan Joint Electoral Management Body Sultan Baheen told journalists on Wednesday.
Mr Karzai won 55.4 percent of the vote, giving him the simple majority needed to avoid a run-off against his nearest rival.
US President George W Bush hailed the victory as a “foreign policy success”. Pakistan also welcomed the news, saying that the already-friendly ties between the neighbouring countries would be strengthened under Mr Karzai’s rule.
Information Minister Sheikh Rashid told AFP in Islamabad that Pakistan was “happy” Mr Karzai had won the elections, adding that Islamabad would continue to offer “maximum support” to the Karzai government in rebuilding the war-torn country. Mr Karzai is now charged with selecting a cabinet of his own choosing. The National Assembly, to be established following the country’s parliamentary elections in April, will ratify the cabinet. agencies
