I started a thread like this on another board awhile ago that worked pretty well, found quite a few cool movies that I hadn't seen - post a list of yours and a short desc. Also just paste any of these names in amazon or imdb and I'm sure you can get a better description.
Suicide Kings - walken kidnapped and tied up thru the whole movie, awesome dialogue
Boondock Saints - irish brothers decide to kill a bunch of russian mobsters, very cool
Thursday - former criminal guy's buddys all show up (on thursday) and a whole shitload of stuff goes down (think tarantino and reservoir dogs w/o the flashbacks)
Formula 51 - kinda over the top, but alright - samuel l jackson in a kilt - invents a new drug - goes to london to sell it, robert carlye, meatloaf
Plunkett and Macleane - 1700's london - fuckin awesome action movie about some highway robbers (much cooler than that sounds) - definatley check this out. also, liv tyler massive cleavage scenes!
True Romance - christian slater, walken, hopper - 1st movie tarantino wrote, very cool stuff
Battle Royale - japanese movie - 1 high school class per year selected for the game - have to goto an island, all get weapons - kill eachother off, last kid after 3 days alive is the winnaarrr!
Equilibrium - christian bale (american psycho guy) - futureistic scifi - kinda like matrix+1984 hybrid, awesome special fx.
Mean Guns - like battle royale but with ice T and christopher lambert in a new prison - winner gets lotta $$$
some more well known but that don't get enough mention....
12 monkeys
orgazmo (south park guys - mormon enters porn)
amazon women on the moon
not another teen movie (actually very funny)
leon: the professional
cube
ronin (great car chase)
kung pow: enter the fist (another 'stupid' movie like dude wheres my car that is actually funny)
I'll post some more as I think of 'em I'm sure.

Suicide Kings
Boondock Saints
True Romance
Great movies...
The Thing (1982)
Plot Outline: Scientists in the Antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084787/
Suicide Kings - also stars Jay Mohr
Boondock Saints - As good as Resevoir Dogs
Formula 51 - silly, but pretty good
Plunkett and Macleane - I enjoyed this one too
True Romance - Quentin Taratino- of course it rules! (Also Christopher Walken)
Equilibrium - Cool flick. Reminds me of Imposter with Gary Sinise, which is also a good movie
Mean Guns - I couldn't watch passed 10 minutes, it looked that awful
12 monkeys- goes without saying
orgazmo (south park guys - mormon enters porn)- so stupid its funny
not another teen movie- not much different than all of these types of movies
leon: the professional- excellent excellent movie
cube- Cube 2 was pretty good
ronin (great car chase)- the only thing good was the car chase
The Thing (1982) was good, but the original was better I believe. Creepier in its "50s horror movie" awfulness
Shaun of the Dead is must see- could be the funniest movie ever, start to finish

Not many of those movies are that obscure. If you could get it at blockbuster, it should be eliminated from the list.

Not many of those movies are that obscure. If you could get it at blockbuster, it should be eliminated from the list.
I think he more meant 'Movies that made less than $20 million dollars at the box office.' Figuring if nobody paid to see them in the theatre, not many people would have seen them, making them obscure. But that would have been a long thread title...
Not many of those movies are that obscure. If you could get it at blockbuster, it should be eliminated from the list.I was thinking that too (esp. True Romance and 12 Monkeys), but I think they'd be considered obscure if they came and went in the movie theaters so the first time you see them is at blockbuster (or on starz or encore- not HBO).
(EDIT: oops, fandango, you beat me. Took too long to write this out I guess)
I'm trying to think of more than just "Imposter", but good movies are hard to come by. Kevin Smith's "Vulgar" starring Dante from Clerks is disturbingly good.
"Romper Stomper" with Russell Crowe as a skinhead
"Rounders" with Edward Norton and Matt Damon. Not obscure, but a good enough movie to warrant a mention
"A Boy and His Dog" is a favorite from childhood. Starring Don Johnson, but don't let that scare you off
Is "The 13th Warrior" with Antonio Banderas obscure?
How about "The Killing Fields" and anything by Ed Wood?
Okay, I give up.

I think he more meant 'Movies that made less than $20 million dollars at the box office.'
Reservoir Dogs made less than 3 million in the box office. I wouldn't call that an obscure movie..
I'm just busting balls now...But Im right.
Is "not found at blockbuster" the only criteria for obscure to you Surly? Just asking, I'm curious.
SurlyTonyDanza

This isn't my thread, so who cares what I think.
That would kind of be my criteria, even though their is probably tons of holes in it. Citizen Kane isn't at my blockbuster, if you could beleive that, and that's not exactly obscure.
I always kind of found obscure being, I have to find it online and wait 2 fucking weeks for it to get here.
I think "cult" films should be incorporated into the obscure category. Just my two shekels on the thread direction. As for contributions, tack "Boxing Helena" and "Kentucky Fried Movie" onto the list.

I like the 'Cult' Films addition. That's broader, and less subjective then 'Obscure.'

They have a "special edition" DVD out, including commentary from the guys who wrote and directed the film. It is fucking hilarious to hear these guys talk like they're serious filmmakers and how in certain scenes they were trying to reference classic movies. If you like the movie you have to buy it.

Clifford Worley (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000454/): You're Sicilian, huh?
Coccotti (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000686/): Yeah, Sicilian.
Clifford Worley (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000454/): Ya know, I read a lot. Especially about things... about history. I find that shit fascinating. Here's a fact I don't know whether you know or not. Sicilians were spawned by *******.
Coccotti (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000686/): Come again?
Clifford Worley (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000454/): It's a fact. Yeah. You see, uh, Sicilians have, uh, black blood pumpin' through their hearts. Hey, no, if eh, if eh, if you don't believe me, uh, you can look it up. Hundreds and hundreds of years ago, uh, you see, uh, the Moors conquered Sicily. And the Moors are *******.
Coccotti (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000686/): Yes...
Clifford Worley (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000454/): So you see, way back then, uh, Sicilians were like, uh, wops from Northern Italy. Ah, they all had blonde hair and blue eyes, but, uh, well, then the Moors moved in there, and uh, well, they changed the whole country. They did so much fuckin' with Sicilian women, huh? That they changed the whole bloodline forever. That's why blonde hair and blue eyes became black hair and dark skin. You know, it's absolutely amazing to me to think that to this day, hundreds of years later, that, uh, that Sicilians still carry that ------ gene. Now this...
[Coccotti busts out laughing]
Clifford Worley (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000454/): No, I'm, no, I'm quoting... history. It's written. It's a fact, it's written.
Coccotti (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000686/): [Laughing] I love this guy.
Clifford Worley (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000454/): Your ancestors are *******. Uh-huh.
[Starts laughing, too]
Clifford Worley (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000454/): Hey. Yeah. And, and your great-great-great-great grandmother fucked a ------, ho, ho, yeah, and she had a half------- kid... now, if that's a fact, tell me, am I lying? 'Cause you, you're part eggplant.
[All laugh]

It's funny how IMDB credits him by saying "Uncredited". Most likely cause he isn't in the actual movie credits.

PCU seem to depend on the type of person they were in college (if your my age anyway). My friends and I have seen PCU at least 50 times and quote lines from it all the time. Other people I know have never seen it and at best might now the "don't be that guy" stuff but have no idea what movie it's from.

Pi:
In Manhattan, behind six locks, lives Max Cohen, a mathematician and computer whiz. Since staring at the sun at age six, he's had terrible headaches; plus, he can't abide human contact except with an aging professor, and he's obsessed with finding numeric patterns. His current obsession is the stock market; his theories bring him to the attention of Wall Street traders. He also keeps running into Lenny, a fast-talking Hasidic who fronts for a cabal that wants to rediscover long-lost mathematical mysteries in the Torah. Neither group is benign, and they pursue Max as his hallucinations and headaches worsen. Does nature offer any solutions? Can Max find them?

I actually have this movie. I always get about 30 minutes in and pass out. It's not cause I think it's bad (what I have seen of it is really good). It's because I always watch it when I'm tired. Who fucking dumb is that? Anyway, I'm gonna have to watch it soon, though. Thanks for the reminder.

Black Christmas - A sorority house is terrorized by a stranger who makes frightening phone calls and then murders the sorority sisters during Christmas break. - Scarier than it sounds.
Fritz the Cat - A hypocritical swinging college student cat raises hell in a satiric vision of various elements on the 1960's. - He's a cat, it's a cartoon, it's rated "X". What more do you need to know?
Phantasm - A young boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave-robber known only as the "Tall Man." - Not too obscure, but deserves a mention.
Barton Fink - In 1941, New York intellectual playwright Barton Fink comes to Hollywood to write a Wallace Beery wrestling picture. Staying in the eerie Hotel Earle, Barton develops severe writer's block. - A true mindfuck.

This is a great forgotten documentary. I love the footage of the performance artist (forgot his name) with the chest plate of firecrackers (or some other kind of explosive).
I've been getting into sleazy Italian crime flicks from the 70's. Movies like Hitch Hike, with David Hess from Last House On The Left and Beast With A Gun with Helmut Berger.
Also, a great JD flick is Over The Edge with a very young Matt Dillon. It's about a suburb with bored kids.

Probably the funniest one i saw was Gay ******* from Outer Space.
Sounds like I made that up, and I sound like a faggot for listing that movie, but let me post a couple lines, courtesy imdb.com....
Capt. B. Dick: I know you're afraid ArmInAss, but my son- this is just step on the long road to becoming a Gay******.
Capt. B. Dick: It started when you're father gave birth to you... and who knows, maybe after this mission, you'll get the sign of the brown ring- and can truly call yourself a Gay******.
Capt. B. Dick: And that's what you've been preparing for since you went to GayAgent School.
ArmInAss: You really think so sir?

Santa Sangre - IT's a a bizarre psychedelic horror story that cannot be described in a few words. Good luck getting it since it's NC-17 and no movie rental store has it. Amazon has it though. It was banned at one time too
Island of Death - The most banned movie of ALL TIME. That should give you enough incentive to see it

True Romance - christian slater, walken, hopper - 1st movie tarantino wrote, very cool stuff
I totally agree and that is my fave movie. Best scene is Walken and Hopper with a young James Gandolfini looking on.
Another movie I have to add is "Pieces of April". I thought that would suck, but I was surprisingly entertained by it.
I got a special edition you could add to this list. The illegal copy of Superman II that is out there but very hard to find where Richard Donners original footage is inserted into the film and makes a hell of a lot of sense. WB is having a hard on trying to stop the circulation of this movie.

Fear of a Black Hat
IFC has been showing this one more often recently which reminded me of it again. It's a Spinal Tap-esque documentary about gangsta rappers NWH (Ni---z with Hats) in the early 90's. It's really funny stuff but the stupid star rating system on my digital cable only gives it 1.5 stars, fucking Cabin Fever has 2.5, what a load of crap.

A few for you...
Yellowbeard (1983) - Pirate comedy at its best. I loved this movie as a kid...
---->whoa! Lot's of boobies!
Bad Boy Bubby (1993) - Australian cult film classic about an abused(bangs
his mom...) son of a priest an a whore killing his mom and runaway
to join a band. I think this might be where south park got the "Tim-may"
sings show idea.
The Castle (1997) - Another Australian cult comedy about a family with a
house adjacent to an airport that wants to buy up the neighborhood to
expand the runway. Well, they don't want to move because "Living next
to the airport is great, if you ever want to go away you don't get stuck
in traffic" great film... Straight to the pool room!

Corvette Summer(1978), I used to love this movie as a kid. Its pretty awful, its on TBS every once in awhile.
High School Senior Kenny Dantley's only love in life is cars. For a shop class project, he and his classmates build a Corvette ("Stingray"). The car is a big hit -- so big, in fact, that it gets stolen! Kenny, having fallen in love with the car, sets out on a summer-long adventure in Las Vegas to find it. Along the way, he meets up with a "hooker-in-training" named "Vanessa" (played by Annie Potts). The two encounter danger and romance as they try to steal back the Stingray.

Hollywood Knights
This is a fantastic movie. Michelle Pfeiffer looking delicious in one of here first movies.
You've got to give credit to the Hollywood Knights. They may be crass, juvenile, sex-mad pranksters, but they have an open-door policy: nerds and jocks alike are welcome, as long as they show proper disrespect for authority. The Hollywood Knights, a minor 1980 cult comedy poised somewhere between the innocent nostalgia of American Graffiti and the raunchy humor of Animal House, chronicles the antics of a practical-joking high school gang on Halloween night, 1965. In tribute to the last night of their favorite hangout, a Beverly Hills drive-in marked for destruction by the snooty Chamber of Commerce, the gang's court jester Newbomb Turk (Robert Wuhl in his film debut) leads the Knights in an all-out assault on the forces of law and order, conformity, and good taste. Nestled in the parade of toilet humor, fart jokes, mooning rebels, and topless co-eds, however, are the ruminations of the end of an era: the times they are a changin'. The doo-wop and surf soundtrack gives way to Motown, the Mamas and the Papas, and the Byrds as high school sweethearts Tony Danza and Michelle Pfeiffer weather the transition from puppy love to adult romance and Vietnam looms on the horizon. It's a schizophrenic film, bopping from juvenile anarchy to thoughtful drama and back again with a sloppy but energetic drive and a rowdy rebelliousness that will never be accused of sensitivity, decency, or dignity. Fran Drescher, Gary Graham, and a hilarious Stuart Pankin also star
Dogtown and the Z-boys
If you were into skateboarding in the heyday of Powell Peralta ('90-'94) this is a great documentary about the beginnings of the sport.
Another great flick from 1986 that I loved in my childhood was Rad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091817/)

“Any Given Sunday” it’s about motor cycle racers back in the 60’s way early 70’s it stars some dude that was trying to win the AMA championship. But what’s really cool is that Steve McQueen is in it. Its mostly southern California with the real groovy music and sun sets and them riding these old triumph and bsa dirt bikes in the desert. Its on speed channel early Sunday mornings some times. its really cool if your into old bikes old cars and cool 16mm cinematography I really like it and watch it every time its on damn that sounds kinda gay blechhh check it out its cool “Le Mans” is fucking cool also staring Steve McQueen

I wonder if anyone here has heard of the movie Series 7:The Contenders. It's a satire on the reality tv genre in which 7 random people are picked by government lottery to compete on a tv reality show. The contenstants have to kill each other(yes, kill each other)anyway they see fit. The prize is your freedom if you survive three rounds. It's very bleek in its violence, but it is a very good movie. It plays like a marathon of tv episodes.

it was grand prix because it was more of a documentary than a fiction based film following garner around as he was blowing all of his movie money, and one of the best crashes was when he trashed his lola, lemans was shot during the race but most of the shots were staged mc queen blew a ton of his own money on that film also, I just love the cinematography of Le mans and the blond was hot also. There is also another film that does a lot of in car stuff mostly during practice runs but long before there were in car cameras the bolted huge 35mm cameras to the tops of F1 cars and ran them around the track. That film also included footage of the elf f1 car that had 4 front tires that turned at the same time I think Jackie stewart was driving it. speed channel ran all 4 films on some Sunday movie marathon last winter, my poor kid was dieing from boredom but I just loved it.

Your grammar was a little rough so I'm not exactly sure what you were saying, but obscure is going to be different for everyone. While I've seen movies like Boondock Saints and Formula 51, I heard about them through friends, not because they were really pumped up by movie studios. After I saw them, I talked them up to my friends, many of them who had not heard of the films either. Over time, they become more well known via word of mouth, but just because you know a movie doesn't mean it's not obscure.

I would say any movie that is made by a large studio, with a large budget, that had spots on the networks during prime time television, cannot be considered obscure.
Formula 51 had all of the above. The reason you didn't hear of it was becuase it failed in the theaters and was out on video in under five months.

Love the discussion about just what obscure is. I have seen most of the movies on your list, baggio (which Night of the Zombies? The Italian one or the Nazi one w/Jamie Gillis?). A lot of those films are exploitation classics and personal favorites.
Any film about Idi Amin is a treasure. Their are a couple of cheesey films about the raid on Entebbe that feature hilarious depictions of Amin, including one with Yaphet Kotto. They have been popping up on cable a lot lately.
A great obscurity I saw recently was No Blade of Grass. It's an end of the world type film made in the UK. It will be playing later this month on TCM. Turner owns the rights and hasn't released it on video, that rich bastard.

The above was posted over a month ago but Monster Squad the first movie I thought of when I clicked on this thread. Hilarious 80's "kids" movie that seems to be totally lost in the DVD era. Think I'll always laugh at the scene where Dracula has the little girl up in the air by the neck and calls her a bitch. They just don't make em like that anymore.
I'll also throw in another movie by the same director of Monster Squad called "Night of the Creeps." Pretty enjoyable zombie movie laced with terrible one-liners and bad acting. Was impossible to find for a long time and I bought a pirate DVD on ebay a couple years ago of it. Recently has been playing a lot on Starz now that zombie movies are all the rage again.
