Anyone into them? I've seen a bunch and I love them but I need some new suggestions. I'd recommend:

audition
battle royale
suicide club
shark skin man and peach hip girl
ichi the killer

I have never seen or heard of any you listed-thought their only experience in that genre was cheesy monster suits stomping model villages. Do they have Japanese voicing or can they speak English?

sometimes you can find them dubbed but most of the time they're subtitled. definitely nothing like godzilla. most of them are pretty twisted. even the more mainstream ones like ringu, which is where the ring came from is so much sicker then the american version. imdb.com has outlines and user reviews if you were interested in any of the aforementioned.

There were two that I saw that were based on anime:
Fist Of the North Star with Chris Penn, and the cop from Picket Fences
The other one I don't remember the title to but the Monster had a little kabuki womans face in its head

battle royale

Quite possibly my most favoritist movie.
Small bit of trivia:
Quentin Tarantino based the charactor Gogo Yubari in Kill Bill on one of the girls in Battle Royale

 The Japanese are the only ones who have any idea how to make an actual horror movie anymore. Most of the good ones that come out here are ripoffs of theirs.

I watched the 100 top moments of CINEMA SHOCK on BRAVO around New Years..

Audition was listed in the top 10. I want to see it but just watching the scene where the girl (dressed like a school girl) uses a CHESSEWIRE to sever the guy's foot(even toned done for regular tv) creeped me out. Also the feeding the vomit scene was quite disturbing.

I've been watching lots of Asian Horror/crazy movies lately.

A couple of suggestions for you:

Ringu, Ringu 2, Ringu 0 - (Ringu of course is great, I just started Ring 2 and it's a little slow but I'm sure it gets better, Ringu 0 is a prequel that tells the story of the girl in the well, I have it but haven't watched it yet.

Uzumaki - (called Spiral or Vortex in the U.S. I just watched it and it is VERY weird but scary too.)

Dark Water - (this one was very scary, sort of like a haunted house story.)

Ju-on, Ju-on 2 - (the Grudge and Grudge 2, Grudge is real scary but a little hard to understand what's going on, Grudge 2 was not as good as the first but still had some scary parts)

Wild Zero - (this is a rock n roll zombie movie, not too scary and not meant to be, mostly funny, but I liked it for some reason)

Attack of the Schoolgirl Zombies - (another zombie movie, when girls turn 16 they get some kind of disease and turn into zombies, it was ok)

I'll add to the list if I think of more that I've watched or after I watch these other ones that I have.

Actually the Japanese have been getting ripped off for decades...

I think the jap horror craze is a passing fad and most people are just jumping on the band wagon. I'm not a big fan of these movies or their American counterparts. I will say that the US version of The Ring was very scary, but that's where my interest ends. Japanese people are not very scary, neither are their children covered in baby powder. However, I respect those of you that have been huge fans of the genre for years. But, otherwise I'm disgusted with all the talk these days about them. I have been a huge fan of kung-fu cinema since I was a kid, and I'm equally disgusted with all these Kill Bill asses going out and purchasing a bootleg of shogun assassin and acting like they are these huge fans of something that isn't mainstream. I will give the recommendations above a try, maybe I'm missing something..... Thanks!

Battle Royale and Suicide Club are both very good flicks. I reccomened both.

Even though I never saw the Jap version, I really thought the US version of The Ring stank.

Saw Ju-on. Hated it. Watched The Grudge, and liked it marginally better. Loved The Ring, but I'm pretty sure I'll hate Ringu when I finally get to watch it. I can't stand japanese horror. (Except for their Survival Horror genre in video games. Resident Evil rocked and ruled.)

battle royale is the best japanese movie I've seen. I could imagine what kind of "controversy" it will cause on this side. Imagine if those not tax paying scum churchs get the word that this movie might be headed to the states?

They're all for sale online, just do a search and you'll find a ton of stores. Or try Netflix. In my experience its pretty hard to find a lot of good foreign films in Blockbuster (at least MY Blockbuster).

2 movies that aren't exactly horror (in my mind) but should be mentioned are "Versus" and "Visitor Q". Versus I guess is supposed to be a horror/action movie but I found it funny too at times. Visitor Q is perhaps the funniest and most twisted movie I've seen in years...
Battle Royal is great, 2nd was ok, I have audition but haven't watched it yet, ichi on my netlfix list, I'll have to check out suicide girls next.

Oh and Ringu and Ringu2 I liked alot. I saw those first then saw the american Ring movie and thought it was horse shit... really. I mean there was no stupid horse bullshit in the Japanese versions and it really added nothing to the movie. Never seen either version of the grudge... maybe I'll check them out.

Not a japanese movie, I think it's from Taiwan. Anyway, the first 3/4 of the movie is pretty creepy. The last bit gets a little boring, but I think it would be worth a watch for you guys.

You are absolutely right! I have been obsessed with horror films, comics and serial killers since I was about 6. The only interesting stuff right now is coming out of Japan & China.

Liz...if you are looking for other reccomendations chech out Amazon. Some of the lists there aren't that bad..."Oldboy" was pretty cool...and Tetsuo the Iron Man is a must see...I was it on LSD in college and it melted my brain! It's not exactly horror. "Pulse" is really good...the american rerelease is coming out soon...so go see the original. Audition was already mentioned...its great.

Hollywood is remaking almost everything the horror genre that's come out of Japan thats done even moderately well in the past 3-5 years. Don't bother seeing the remakes...they're crap. See them after the originals anyway.

If you are near NYC go to Chinatown. There's a good VCD/DVD shop off Canal that has really cheap japanese horror. Either on Mott or Mulberry. No one speaks english...so you kinda have to go by the cover art...good rule of thumb is if you see 10 copies of something...its probably not crap.

I thought "The Ring" and "The Grudge" were really good versions of their originals' counterparts, especially with the latter having the same director as the original. I haven't seen the remake of "Dark Water" but the original is really creepy. Also, check out "The Neighbor No. 13". And if you want to go back a ways, "Matango" a.k.a. "Attack of the Mushroom People", another really creepy, trippy film courtesy of the same folks who directed and starred in the old Godzilla films. Then there's "Eko Eko Azarak: Wizard of Darkness" which has some nice Japanese schoolgirl lesbianism. "Pyrokinesis" is a neat Japanese version of "Firestarter".

And yes, "Battle Royale" is a fucking awesome movie. Too bad there's no "official" release.

And by all means, stick with the subtitles.

Horror, good subject.
Not to be confused with whores, the better subject.

There's whole sub-categories of the Jap horror, though.
Shocky gore flicks, psychological suspense flicks, supernatural terror, etc..
They make these types of film so "cool" because their culture views death, suffering, the afterlife and essentially good/evil itself entirely different than western beliefs on it. That leads to an entirely different approach to scaring someone.

For easily accessible J-horror, imdb takashi miike, pretty much anything he's done in the past 10 years qualifies as worth watching at least once and he's played around with every kind of sub-category you can think of.
Or google his name, and check out directors he's into himself. They're making these kind of films that require work on the viewers part. He's got enough material out there to keep you busy for a while, too.
I think someone mentioned a few of his less popularized films. Bizita Q, namely. Check it out if you havent. It's a decent time-waster.
Also, He got together with showtime not too long ago for the Masters of Horror series(Also worth checking out). They got other pimp horror directors (argento, carpenter, landis, hooper, etc) and each did episodes.
You'll want to find Miike's episode called Imprint, online somewhere. It's pretty raw.

If you wanna dig around deeper for some classic black and white J-horror, which dates to the mid 50's - mid 60's.. There's a ton of creepy oldschool films you can find online, theres a bunch of torrent sites that cater to 'em. These best define j-horror and how it differs from the western idea of horror (especially if you look at what someone like Hitchcock was doing around the same time). Trippy too, but for different reasons.
Jigoku, and Yotsuya Ghost Story come to mind, are by the same dude, and are probably the easiest to find among the oldschool ones, Pretty sure you could find them at a big city retail video chain too. They're good in the way the original Night of the Living Dead was.

i watched flower of flesh and blood a few days ago. I wasn't really impressed. The effects were pretty realistic but the samurai fella kind of took me out of the movie. I thought he overacted quite a bit.

I watched visitor Q last night and i highly recommend this one. It was the most fucked up/ sweetest movie i have seen so far. The fact that this family found their love for each other after all the crazy shit they were into made my day.

Can't believe that I never saw this thread before.

Anyhow, as previously stated, Battle Royale is one of the best movies ever filmed.

Run like hell from the sequel, though.

While not really a serious horror film. But STACY a zombie flick, that picks on Evil dead and Romero's zombie flicks. It's just fucking bizzar...I'd say watch it high or drunk.

Ju-on I liked aswell. Battle Royale is amazing. Suicide club was good but just messed up. Oldboy...the ending wow.

I'm not a huge fan of the americanized bastardizations.

But they are working on a American version of Battle Royale....I weep.

I still want to check out Dead or Alive trilogy.

Personally, battle royale is the best in that list. Fucking brilliant movie. The japanese ring stunk on ice.
