wow, I've seen three of those movies and only want to see like 3 others. Stupid Oscars.

Johny Depp is going to win best actor. It will be his reward for being such a good left wing soldier.

Depp has been begging for an oscar for years. He carefully chooses his roles to ensure there is some gimmik that will get him exposure for a nomination.

Actually, this is only his second nomination, and he never campaigned for a nomination before. He was actually very surprised when he was nominated last year, as most of his roles are so offbeat they are not even recognized by the old codgers that vote on the Academy awards. Like an 83 year old retired commercial actor is going to watch Edward Scissorhands...You may have been thinking of Jim Carrey, who has been whining about his lack of a nomination since The Cable Guy. Though the present group of A list actors is decidely liberal, the voting body is probably not all that biased. I didn't see Farenheit 911 listed anywhere.

All that being said, he doesn't have a chance against Clint Eastwood. Which of those candidates is most likely to get a bunch of senior citizens to vote for him?

Totally untrue, you must be thinking of someone else. Johnny Depp chooses roles that he has never done before. He says in interviews that he tries to never do the same thing twice. Its why I was so surprised he agreed to do "Pirates of the Carribean 2", but then again, his children love it and he's never done a sequel before.

Which is why right-winger Clint Eastwood is also nominated? Sorry fella, not everything is some crazy liberal conspiracy.

Sigh... you anti-liberals are just as bad as the people you don't like. Saying Johnny Depp is going to win an award for being a liberal and that he chooses his roles solely for the purpose of winning is absolute lunacy.

Of all the movies nominated for a major award, I have seen every movie other than the three nobody heard of nominated for best actress. The nominations are pretty fair, though I thought Eternal Sunshine should be nominated for Best Picture over Ray. Jamie Foxx was great in Ray, but the movie was not as good as people make it out to be.

I'll admit, I'm shocked that Farenheit 911 isn't all over the nominations.

Michael Moore withdrew the movie from consideration for Best Documentary because he wanted a Best Picture nom. There was no way that was going to happen.

Calculated risk, based on this being the all-time weakest field for best picture. Schlock like Finding Neverland would never get nominated in a normal year. Ray also was just your standard biopic, and probably also benefits from the weak year. The only thing he missed was that his movie simply wasn't very good, either as entertainment, or as a documentary. Same with Passion of the Christ.

Did you see Finding Neverland? This one could be considered a chick flick (though not really), but it was damn good.

Anybody else out there hoping that this is the year that academy finally acknowledges Scorcese for a best director nod? How has this man been working for all these years and hasn't picked up at least one statue yet?

Academy Awards: No Moore Oscar (http://www.bayoubuzz.com/articles.aspx?aid=3117)

I think Scorcese should only get an Academy Award if he deserves it for that year. He should not have won for Gangs of New York, for instance, because although that movie was good, there were better ones that year. I would not have a problem with him winning for The Aviator, though I would not mind seeing Clint Eastood or Alexander Payne winning either.

I agree with you, but I could see how someone could make the arguement. I thought Finding Neverland was a great movie, personally, easily one of the best of the year and better than overrated movies like The Aviator.

Goddamn Paul Giamatti(Sideways) and Jim Carrey(Eternal Sunshine of the SPotless Mind) got shafted for best actor nods and that fuckin pisses me off.

Now mark my words, although Ray was excellent, Jamie Foxx will NOT win best actor...he WILL win best supporting actor for collateral. I wont go into explanations unless someone asks.

DEFINENTLY deserving of best actor is Don Cheadle for Hotel Rwanda. That guy is the best and most underrated black actor (possibly actor in general) ever. He was unbelievable in boogie nights, out of sight, traffic, etc. Hotel Rwanda was an un-fucking-believable movie

Scorsese will win best director, no doubt about it. He's long overdue

And as much as I LOVE natalie portman, Sophie Okonedo should win best supporting actress. She and Cheadle made one of the most heartwrenching, introspective films that i've ever seen.

just my 2 cents

My money is on aviator or passion, for best film, the artsy fartsy or think they are, academy goes nuts for that type of shit.
and House of flying daggers for cinematography
